Broken back links
-
I have noticed that some of the back links built for us by our SEO agency we have no longer work. Is there is a common view on the percentage of back links generally do not work say after a year or so. If there is an acceptable number, want to give to my SEO agency as a KPI?
-
Josh - thanks for those inputs. I am going to get deeper into this with the SEO agency - my hunch is that it is poor link building as we normally update our site with fresh and relevant content almost every day. But when quizzed, the agency said that it is natural for back links to die and didn't seem to make any sense

Hey Kesh,
An acceptable number is going to be difficult to come up with. It all depends on your content, the types of links you're getting, etc.
When you say that they don't work, do you mean they are broken links? If so, is it because your site no longer has the page that it linked to (resulting in a 404)? If so, I would work with your SEO to have that content re-created or redirected as appropriate.
http://seo-factor.com/404-reports-for-link-building/
I would also attempt to contact those sites and have them update the links to your site.
If they are broken because the linking site mis-coded something, again I would have your SEO contact them and see if you can't get them updated.
Are they just being dropped by the linking sites all together? Then I would definitely talk to your SEO and discuss what types of sites are dropping your links, why they may be doing so, and what other types of links you are getting.
I'm having a hard time thinking of a situation where the links built to your site would regularly drop, other than being paid for or in some sort of directory service. This isn't to say that there isn't a more "legitimate" reason, but I would talk with your SEO to get answers to those.
I also don't know about placing a KPI on that until you hammer out some of the finer points. Generally speaking we as SEOs don't always have power over third parties. At least, until I finally invent my 'SEO Brain Control' device. Odds are, your SEO has noticed already and should have some sort of plan. But we are a funny in that we sometimes assume that everyone knows all about this stuff and it's not a talking point.
Given my vague answers I'll give you a couple of scenarios and my opinions on them.
If you're getting bunches of links from low quality sites, and regularly seeing those links drop and new links added, then it's likely because those links are paid-for in some capacity. If that's the case, call your SEO and make sure they explain their plan, and the risks associated with buying links. Basically, poke and prod until you get answers (and ask many questions here for second opinions).
But if your SEO is helping you promote the awesome content created through your site, and building many quality links to your site. Then maybe those dropped links are because scraper blogs pick it up sometimes. This is in a way a sort of flattery. In that case your SEO might be totally kicking...you know. Just make sure they have in place methods to prevent/combat/make use of those scraper sites.

Internal links: How do I find keywords that are not linked to a URL?
Hi Moz members I'd really like to place an internal link of every instance of an important keyword phrase "cycling caps" or "cycling cap" to my eComm category page
Link Building | | andystorey
https://www.prendas.co.uk/collections/headwear/cotton-caps I feel this would not only help my customers browsing my store, but I believe it will help from an SEO perspective. How can I search my site using Moz, Screaming Frog, Google etc to find every time cycling cap(s) is used but is not linked to the above URL? I can then apply the same for cycling jerseys, socks, etc Andy0 -
Internal Links - How to Increase them, Categories not being considered as Internal Links
Hi All: As per my understanding, Internal Equity Passing Links is a metric defining PA. Now my website has around 65 internal links while few of my competitors have more than 180 links. I am unable to understand how to increase the internal links passing equity on my website, because I can see, more number of links on my website than my competitors but opensiteexplorer does not show that. I am really confused. Please help out if anyone knows something about this issue. Thanks in advance.

Links from same server or not?
Hello, I make websites so every website I make has a backlink to my website. Currently all my websites are hosted on server A, but my OWN website is hosted on server B. I plan to move my website to server A too. This will indicate that all the backlinks I have currently are from a difference server, now all these links will come from the SAME server. Will this have any results on my positions? Is this something that you have to take into account? Jeroen

Link Detox and Link Removal
I have a question about which links to remove after running a link detox from Link Research Tools. First a little back story. I had had an SEO company link building for one of the websites I own. But I have recently stopped working with them. In the last month my rankings have near dropped off the charts. I have just recently gotten access to Google webmaster tools and noticed an unnatural link warning from back in March. So yesterday I ran link detox and it reported 19 toxic links, 120 suspicious links, and 24 healthy links. It's rather obvious that I should remove all of the toxic links. They all from sites that have been deindexed by google. But my question is a about the suspicious links. What should my criteria be for removing them? Am I better off removing them all and leaving my site with only 24 healthy links or should I personally comb through them and remove only the worst of the worst so that I leave my site with a few more links? I'd really like to get the site ready to resubmit to google as soon as I can. Thoughts? yyCOf.png

How to beat This with Links?
Hello, So i am trying to beat this website gujratdetectives.com/ with a new website which has no backlinks as of now.
Link Building | | hardik_hrc
Now, I checked in open explorer that this site has many moderate level links. No high authority links but the problem is these links they all have title as the search keyword "detective in Gujarat" so maybe this is why this site rests on the top of this search keyword. So if building authority links into a different domain(Not detective related) with very high PR but WITHOUT title of relevancy. Anchor text would be the keyword but not the title of page. So the question is will those authority sites beat this gujratdetectives.com/ ???0 -
.edu links
Hi mozzers, I've had some great success reaching out to many .edu webmasters. Often they are professors and such. My question is, i'm guessing during the summer holiday period, reaching out to these webmasters won't be so fruitful. I'm not in the US and was wondering when the US Summer holidays are for universities over there? Also, does anyone have experience outreaching to these webmasters over the holidays? Peter

Link Churn - where have all my links gone?
I am sure most of you have asked yourself the question I'm asking right now.. Where have all my links gone? I am starting to get twitchy now. I would estimate we have lost around 60% of our links in the past 3 weeks. Does anyone have any comeback stories? Feel like I am back to the start again. I have made a number of changes on the site not least removing a reciprical link page.. that had over 200 links on it but from reading one of Rand's tweets is it true that linking out could be good again?
