How do I address "Critical Factors: Accessible to Engines"?
-
Hello,I am going thru the on-page report card produced by SEOMOZ and am stumped as to how to address the first critical factor. It looks like the correct meta tag to get search engines to index the site is at the bottom of the header. And as far as I know, which isn't much, the site returns the HTTP code 200 when I refresh.I am new at this, so please let me know if you have some specific solutions. I am using IWeb and the IWeb SEO Tool to make meta code improvements. I have pasted the head code for my website (www.grass2greens.com) below. Thanks in advance!<html lang="en" xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" http-equiv="Content-Type"><meta content="iWeb 3.0.4" name="Generator"><meta content="local-build-20120619" name="iWeb-Build"><meta content="IE=EmulateIE7" http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible"><meta content="width=880" name="viewport"><title>Grass to Greens: Asheville Edible Landscapingtitle><link href="Grass_to_Greens__Asheville_Edible_Landscaping_files/Grass_to_Greens__Asheville_Edible_Landscaping.css" media="screen, print" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet"><style type="text/css"><script type="text/javascript" async="" src="http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js"><script type="text/javascript" async="" src="http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js"><script src="Scripts/iWebSite.js" type="text/javascript"><script src="Scripts/iWebImage.js" type="text/javascript"><script src="Scripts/iWebMediaGrid.js" type="text/javascript"><script src="Scripts/Widgets/SharedResources/WidgetCommon.js" type="text/javascript"><script src="Scripts/Widgets/HTMLRegion/Paste.js" type="text/javascript"><script src="Grass_to_Greens__Asheville_Edible_Landscaping_files/Grass_to_Greens__Asheville_Edible_Landscaping.js" type="text/javascript"><script type="text/javascript"><meta content="Grass to Greens offers a range of edible landscape design, consultation, installation, and maintenance services. I'm not exactly sure about the SEOMoz error - but your site is doing a strange redirect when I load it up, going to this URL:
http://www.grass2greens.com/Grass_to_Greens__Asheville_Edible_Landscaping.html
It looks like you've setup a CNAME in your DNS settings to do that - which could potentially be confusing the SEOMoz crawler. Any reason in particular you set it up that way? Most people just set their homepage to be www.domain.com/ and have domain.com redirect to www.domain.com using an 301 redirect.

How to 301 redirect, without access to .htaccess and to a new domain
There are few ways to do this and I would like to ask other Mozzers if they have found the best way. We have a site .co.uk and are moving it back to .com. However we do not have any access to the site folders for .co.uk. (We have to move it anyway as our provider is withdrawing their service). We have built our URL 301 redirect file and it is ready to go, but how to impliment it? We can repoint .co.uk to another site, and then redirect all traffic for each URL but this is quite messy, or just forget trying to 301 each page and just rediect the whole site.

the .com has more authority already, but we ready do not want to frustrate visitors who are using a link to reach a product, only to find they hit our homepage and not the product. Your thoughts would be very welcome or other ideas Bruce0 -
Should I "No Index" Certain Pages On My Site?
I have some pages on my site that don't really have any content other than some iframes that are embedded from another site. I thought it would be best to tag the page with a no-index so that search engines would leave the page alone since it has no content as far as the search engine can tell (but does provide value to my site visitors). Is this the proper approach or does it do more harm than good?

Do search engines look for keywords in the slug?
Is it OK to split a key phrase into a slug and file name, or should the entire key phrase be in the file name. For example, consider the following articles: How to wash your car.

How to change a tire. How to replace a windshield wiper. Will search engines recognize the "how to" in the following taxonomy: www.domain.com/how-to/wash-your-car/
www.domain.com/how-to/change-a-tire/
www.domain.com/how-to/replace-a-windshield-wiper/ Or, should the "how-to" be included in the file name? Best,Christopher0 -
Will Google handle "this not that" pages differently?
If you create pages about "try keyword1 not keyword2" will there be any barriers to getting the pages ranked for keyword2? Example: You have furnished rental units in a small town, and you offer nightly/weekly rentals. You want to rank for "town hotel" since you offer the same service as a hotel. Since you're not really a hotel, you create a page called "Better than a hotel: Town nightly rental units". Anyone know if Google has an algorithm to detect this (they would have to detect the meaning of the words you were using and know that you were promoting something other than a hotel) and determine you're not really relevant to "town hotel" and not rank you well? I think they probably do not, as I've seen things like Google Adsense Alternatives articles ranking well for the term Google Adsense, or Boycott Godaddy sites ranking well for the term godaddy. But I would like to hear any evidence or facts others know of.

Does the positioning of the text on a webpage matter for search engines?
Does the positioning of the text on a webpage matter for search engines? Do you need to place the text at the upperside of a webpage or is at the bottom also a good option?

Transition between a blog to e-commerce webshop, will my domain "lose" authority
Hi Seomoz'ers, Currently I am analyzing the best possible strategy which situation is as follow: I am having a blog with a great EMD about a specific product we are selling. The blog is currently ranking in position 1 for different keyword phrases. However I would like to make a switch from the current Wordpress blog to Magento webshop. Simply because the product should be sold through a professional webshop with many related products. Only the homepage of mydomainname.com is optimized. I am affraid I will lose my #1 ranking when I put my webstore online on this domainname. Most likely I will lose my PA and keep my DA. Which actions should I take in order to keep the ranking in Google position 1 with the new webstore? My best possible option I guess: 1. Replace the Wordpress blog with the Magento webstore and optimize the homepage with on-page seo of the webstore for the targeted keywords. Will this work? As the backlinks I've built are pointing all to the domainname.com (homepage). Thanks in advance. Any more suggestions are welcome 🙂
