Changing Googles Sitelinks
-
Hi all,
I know Google will only show sitelinks if the site is deemed authoritive and if it will help the user searching a keyword, but is there anyway to order or control which links appear in the sitelinks?
I know you can demote a sitelink in Webmasters, but is this not shooting yourself in the foot? If I demote a link will Google replace it with the next link it thinks is worthwhile and be doing this eventually show the links you want to appear in your sitelinks?
Thanx
Gary

Thanx very much for the link Marcus, interesting reading. It looks like there are certain things to tweak to try influence it.
Do anyone have experience in this regard that they can add to this topic? Here is my situation, I have a group of 7 companies, represented on one website, now only one of them show on the sitelinks, the rest point to blog articles... so you can imagine it would be better to show companies on these sitelinks.

HI Gary
I don't believe you can either -
Unless it is seriously detrimental I would not demote a page - I would just try and make others more important
Maybe the thing is to have some pages optimised and be very relevant for a phrase and work on that page having a high authority. Add video (and send links to the video), and other ethical means.
PPC is definitely a good solution and then add site extensions to the ads - that can be very effective. (The site extensions may only show if you are in position 1 - 3 at the top of the page. You can add in a number and Google choose which ones they will display (if they do). But when they do, it can be really effective.
Hope this helps

Hey Gary
It's algorithmic, so beyond the demoting of a page there is no way to directly influence it as it is based on what Google believes that people will want from your site.
You can buy sitelinks via PPC ads if you wanted something more specific but.... in my experience, I have not seen any reliable way to influence sitelinks.
But... you could experiment, this article seems to suggest it's not impossible:

That's a trial and error approach but if this is important for you then you can have a bash.
Hope this helps!
Marcus

How long does Google indexes the website after algorithm update?
I've noticed that the page ranks for some queries were improved unexpectedly, without any actions from my side. Is it possible that this improvement is connected with with Google algorithm update Sep, 4-5?

Advice regarding latest Google Algo Update please, if possible...
Hi there I wonder if anyone can advise on this. Since the latest google update on 1st Sept or whenever it rolled out, we noticed an initial spike in hits on our site, which was great. However now we are noticing levels going back to where they were and less people visiting the site. It also seems to be very sporadic. So we have a period of say a couple of hours with no one on the site, then suddenly loads visiting. We have also noticed a big dip in enquiries, despite the site having roughly the same amount of visitors. All our stats on Moz, Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs, Serpfox and various other rank trackers are showing that we have had an increase in visibility on our tracked keywords. There is a definite spike on all, but where is our traffic and where are our enquiries? Usually we are able to work out where the problem is when updates occur but with this we have no idea. We are utterly baffled. Is this normal? Is this just fluctuations and will settle down? Has anyone else noticed weird things happening? If anyone has any ideas or experience of this then would be most grateful for any advice. Feeling rather desperate at the moment. Many thanks in advance. Clojo

Why would google favour overseas retailers? Really weird results..
Why would google favour results from overseas retailers for queries in the UK? It's weird since most won't ship to the UK and the same products are found at dozens of UK retailers. It's not the case that the overseas sites are necessarily bigger brands or better SEO optimised, so having asked the leading agencies in the UK and them being stumped I was curious if this was something anyone else had seen? Our theory is that this can only be a poorly disguised attempt to drive Adwords.

New Google Update In The Past Two Days???
Was there a new Google update in the past couple of days. Traffic on my test site has gone from ~ 1,000 per day to over 4,000 per day for no particular reason. Most of the traffic is still coming from Google and is not the result of any new major links. My keyword rankings also appear to be the same ...

Site not in Google top 50 for key terms
Dear Moz Community, Our site - http://www.sportsdirectnews.com publishes a high volume of daily sport stories and aims to follow Google's Webmaster Guidelines, yet our pages don't appear anywhere in Google's SERP's. We've looked in details at the issue and think it could be something to do with: a) Unusual links or b) High page loading time or c) Too many on-page links If you could have a look at the site - http://www.sportsdirectnews.com - and give your professional opinion as to why our website is not appearing in SERP's, we would be most appreciative. Effect of new Google SSL policy on our Analytics - AACK!
So I went to look at our keyword reports in GA today and our most popular keyword was "(not provided)". It now accounts for 10% of our referred visits. Unfortunately, it also has a 125% avg order value compared to the rest of our site. This is a really annoying policy that Google has implemented and will clearly have an effect on our ability to effectively market our site.
