Tips for Panda-Proofing an Image Gallery
-
I'm currently working on a website that has a video, image and media gallery with over 9,000 items.
The gallery can be found here:
http://flyawaysimulation.com/images/16/microsoft-flight-simulator-x/Every image has a page of its own. Therefore, essentially 9,000 pages of very thin content, especially the image pages with no UGC comments.
Does anyone here have any tips to "panda-proof" these pages? The images still need to be indexed. What can we do here?
The site also hosts videos, which of course the page the video resides on needs to stay in the index too (like youtube). Example of the video page here:

Really want to hear your thoughts.
Thanks in advance!

We have not used MTurk. I think that it would be very hard to find a Turker who would have the background knowledge needed to write accurate content for our site and the writing skills needed to pass my picky requirements.
I can't share URLs but for the image content we just write detailed explainations of the images. As they say, an image is worth 1000 words. These articles might expand well beyond the single image and have four, five or six by the time we are finished.
I know that writing 9000 of these would be very time consuming. Just pick the ones with the highest traffic or the highest traffic potential and start writing articles. I am writing an article for one of my pages today and probably tomorrow and have hundreds more to write.

Thank you EGOL for your reply.
You're answer is along the lines of what I was already thinking. Have you had any experience with MTurk for getting this content written?
Could you provide me an example of one of your 200 word image and 1000 word image pages? I just want to take a look to see how you've gone about writing relevant copy for an image.
It did cross my mind to NOINDEX these pages, but you're right - investing time in the content would be much more valuable in the long run - it's just that there are over 9,000 pages to get this content written for!
Thank you again for your reply.

I know that this isn't the answer that you want.... but, it is very hard to panda-proof thin content.
I have a website that has lots and lots of images - each on a separate page - that could have very very skimpy page content. To avoid problems with search engines, we invested a lot to get relevant text onto those pages.
So, here is my advice.
Instead of thinking of this as a "problem". Think of it as a way to invest in the harvesting of long tail traffic. When you start adding text to these pages the amount of traffic that they pull from search goes up - often enormously. And you make some money back.
We have a lot of image pages that originally had 30 words. When we increased to 200 words the amount of traffic went up nicely, and when some of these have been improved to 1000 word article pages, now their rankings have gone up and their traffic is many times higher than what they pulled in at 30 words.
Pick your best pages for additional content and invest in them. See what happens. You might be so surprised that you decide to invest in a lot more pages.

SEO Tips for Affiliate Website
Hi all , I would just like to have an expert Opinion on SEO for Affiliate Website . Basically if I list all Third party products (Amazon/Affilate Window etc ) on my website and then the customer will be redirected to the Affiliates website to make a Purchase will there be an issue with SEO (Lots of Outgoing Url's) and Will the website not rank for Important keywords or will it be hit by any penalty ? I heard it's not good for SEO , any work around this ? If this is case How come cashback Sites rank well with no issues , although the concept is basically the same ? Any Tips or Advice appreciated as how to get this done safe . My Preferred Option would be with Magento Shopping Cart or second option would be with Wordpress Cart only in case this provides some SEO benefits over Magento by some plugins .

Web traffic tanked, not Penguin nor Panda...I am stumped...
I have had my current website for several years now, and traffic has been slowly building. 2010 = 49 hits a day, 2011 = 71 hits a day, 2012 = 157 hits a day. I target local traffic and local keywords around by business. I have kept up with SEO changes, using Facebook, social media, updated tags, and kept content fresh, added more galleries images, Auth tags & markup. I have 301 older sites that I have run in the past. Then early this spring everything dropped, slowly but surely, now I'm at 90 hits a day SERPS for my main phrase "boudoir photography" us at less than 50 according to MOZ. I have been watching the new Algo updates, and never had any issues because I don't spam article marketing, I don't buy links, I try to keep content fresh, I don't use directories...I designed the site for PEOPLE not SEO. I get major press about once to twice a year, newspapers still don't get links though.. grrrrr I get natural links through gallery shows, events, local blogs, art shows... So I thought it might be over the year I have slowly added too many less than 100 word pages? Media, Bio, Art I combined all into one page. One page with 300+ words VS 3 pages of 100 words. I did a 301 several pages and trimmed my menu down from 11 to 8 to help everything look cleaner and more eye pleasing...I started asking my friends/clients/collaborators for more links with no link text so they are natural...& not just "boudoir photography" Traffic is still dropping... What have I missed? www.bayareaboudoir.com

Can white text over images hurt your SEO?
Hi everyone, I run a travel website that has about 30 pre-search city landing pages. In a redesign last year we added large "hero" images to the top of the page, and put our h1 headlines on top of them in white. The result is attractive, but I'm wondering if Google could be reading this page as "white text on white page", which is an obvious no-no, especially if it could seem that we're trying to hide text. Here's an example: http://www.eurocheapo.com/paris/ H1: Expert reviews of cheap hotels in Paris I should add that our SERPs for these city pages has dropped (for "Cheap hotels in X"), but it could obviously be related to other issues. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks! Tom

Decreasing Page Load Time with Placeholder Images - Good Idea or Bad Idea?
In an effort to decease our page load time, we are looking at making a change so that all product images on any page past page 1 load with a place holder image. When the user clicks to the next page, it then loads all of the images for that page. Right now, all of the product divs are loaded into a Javascript array and loaded in chunks to the page display div. Product-heavy pages significantly increase load time as the browser loads all of the images from the product HTML before the Javascript can rewrite the display div with page-specific product HTML. In order to get around this, we are looking at loading the product HTML with a small placeholder image and then substituting the appropriate product image URLs when each page is output to the display div. From a user experience, this change will be seamless and they won't be able to tell the difference, plus they will benefit from a potentially a short wait on loading the images for the page in question. However, the source of the page will have all of the product images in a given category page all having the same image. How much of a negative impact will this have on SEO?

How about some SEO tips for small local businesses
The amount of time I hear people say write good content and people will naturally link to you. I appreciate this must be valid for large websites that a driven by content. However, it doesn't really hold much hope for smaller businesses with just service information etc. I work for a small business that does web design in the UK. However, I'm finding it difficult to do any sort of link building. In my opinion nobody is going to link to any of our content naturally or if it is, its going to be small time. Our rankings have dropped slightly (only to 4th in our local county). I've done the following thinks to try get it back up there but its having little or no results. Adding us to local business directories External Articles on site Cleaned up some duplicate title tags. What link building can I do? Is link building the home page sometimes not always the way to go? What content can I write that google will like? See what I mean? My rankings did climb a little bit but then dropped straight back down to their original places 2 weeks later. Help would be appreciated.

Pictures Gallery
Hello, I am at building a travel web site where I want to add a 'cool' way for the user to display the pictures (instead of simply listing the picture and scrolling). But when I look on the web for methods to create a pictures gallery, I can see that there is many ways to do that. From an SEO stand point, which method would be the best? JQuery, AJAX, etc. Or what I should not use if it is easier. As for the link, beside the loading page issue, Is there a limit of images I should include in a page? Any advice on what should I use or not use to create an SEO oriented images gallery. Thanks !
