How can I penalise my own site in an international search?
-
Perhaps penalise isn't the right word, but we have two ecommerce sites.
One at .com and one at .com.au.
For the com.au site we would like only that site to appear for our brand name search in google.com.au.
For the .com site we would like only that site to appear for our brand name search in google.com.
I've targeted each site in the respective country in Google Webmaster Tools and published the Australian and English address on the respective site.
What I'm concerned about is people on Google.com.au searching our brand and clicking through to the .com site.
Is there anything I can do to lower the ranking of my .com site in Google.com.au?
-
One of the examples scenarios Google gives is:
Your pages have broadly similar content within a single language, but the content has small regional variations. For example, you might have English-language content targeted at readers in the US, GB, and Ireland.
Tough call, you might have to do some research to see if this solution will help in your particular scenario.
-
They aren't identical, they have a different design, text, almost everything.
They are similar. As in they are both book stores.
The .com.au has Australian wording / spelling, the .com has English spelling and wording.
Do we need to specify hreflang="en-au" if they are different sites?
-
Are the sites identical but just hosted on different domains to target different regions?
Is there any variation in the English used on each site, for example, do you have Australian English spelling on the .com.au and US (or other) English on the .com?
If yes, you might want to have a look into the rel="alternative" hreflang="x" meta tags.
Checkout: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=189077
Especially the Example configuration: rel="alternate" hreflang="x" in action section

Thanks Mat, that definitely sounds wise.
Penalise was definitely the wrong word, I more meant, what other signals can we put out to Google to say that this is the com.au site and we want this to appear above the com.
-
I'd be ever so careful about doing anything to deliberately try to lower you ranking. It just sounds like an approach that could go horribly wrong.
You best bet might be to live with the fact that both will appear (or better still - enjoy and encourage it), but use the sites to achieve the end goal of getting users on to the correct site.
The usual way to do this would be to check the IP address of the user against a geoip database. I've used both the paid and free versions of the database available at maxmind.com for this. That will allow you to identify users that are in Australia and direct them towards to .au site.
How you direct them is important. You could just automatically redirect those users to the new site. Some people will say that this can look like cloaking and cause issues, but I don't believe that alone will do this. However it is often better to intercept those users with a message along the lines of "It looks like you are connecting from Australia - would you like to view our dedicated Australia website?" - then list the benefits and offer a choice there.
If you do that it would be good to set a custom variable in analytics to know when that message had been shown. That would allow you to measure how many people are following the suggestion.
Once you are happy it is working then you will probably end up encouraging both domains to appear as dominating the SERP for your brand is always useful.

Is it ok to 301 redirect this previously algorithmicly penalised site?
Hi All, Is it OK to 301 redirect site A to site B? Site A: http://goo.gl/P9Zp2y Site B: http://goo.gl/ySDCzb The story - in 2013 site a seemed to be penalised with some kind of anchor text algorithm penalty - SEO couldnt fix, so created site B and turned site A into a holding page with a no follow link to new site. SEO company worked on disavow file etc, implemented in late 2013 301 redirect site A to B in late 2013 - SEO advised to stop 301 about 8 weeks later... This was my fault i didnt realise the implications of a redirect... Stopped the redirect, but too late, as site B dropped in rankings in early 2014 - new disavow files uploaded to both sites, but damage seems done now. No longer have a SEO company, and i would ideally like to 301 redirect site A to B, as it looks messy having a holding page - but wanted to check if SEO would still strongly advise against that? please advise James

Website penalised can't find where the problem is. Google went INSANE
Hello, I desperately need a hand here! Firstly I just want to say that I we never infracted google guidelines as far as we know. I have been around in this field for about 6 years and have had success with many websites on the way relying only in natural SEO and was never penalised until now. The problem is that our website www.turbosconto.it is and we have no idea why. (not manual) The web has been online for more than 6 months and it NEVER started to rank. it has about 2 organic visits a day at max. In this time we got several links from good websites which are related to our topic which actually keep sending us about 50 visits a day. Nevertheless our organic visita are still 1 or 2 a day. All the pages seem to be heavily penalised ... when you perform a search for any of our "shops"even including our Url, no entries for the domain appear. A search example: http://www.turbosconto.it zalando What I will expect to find as a result: http://www.turbosconto.it/buono-sconto-zalando The same case repeats for all of the pages for the "shops" we promote. Searching any of the brads + our domain shows no result except from "nike" and "euroclinix" (I see no relationship between these 2) Some days before for these same type of searches it was showing pages from the domain which we blocked by robots months ago, and which go to 404 error instead of our optimised landing pages which cannot be found in the first 50 results. These pages are generated by our rating system... We already send requests to de index all theses pages but they keep appearing for every new page that we create. And the real pages nowhere to be found... Here isan example: http://www.turbosconto.it/shops/codice-promozionale-pimkie/rat

You can see how google indexes that for as in this search: site:www.turbosconto.it rate Why on earth will google show a page which is blocked by the robots.txt displaying that the content cannot retrieved because it is blocked by the robots instead of showing pages which are totally SEO Friendly and content rich... All the script from TurboSconto is the same one that we use in our spanish version www.turbocupones.com. With this last one we have awesome results, so it makes things even more weird... Ok apart from those weird issues with the indexation and the robots, why did a research on out backlinks and we where surprised to fin a few bad links that we never asked for. Never the less there are just a few and we have many HIGH QUALITY LINKS, which makes it hard to believe that this could be the reason. Just to be sure we, we used the disavow tool for these links, here are the bad links we submitted 2 days ago: domain: www.drilldown.it #we did not ask for this domain: www.indicizza.net #we did not ask for this domain: urlbook.in #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://inpe.br.way2seo.org/domain-list-878 #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://shady.nu.gomarathi.com/domain-list-789 #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://www.clicdopoclic.it/2013/12/i-migliori-siti-italiani-di-coupon-e.html #we did not ask for this, moreover and is a copy of a post of an other blog http://typo.domain.bi/turbosconto.it I have no clue what can it be, we have no warning messages in the webmaster tools or anything.
For me it looks as if google has a BUG and went crazy on judging our italian website. Or perhaps we are just missing something ??? If anyone could throw some light on this I will be really glad and willing to pay some compensation for the help provided. THANKS A LOT!0 -

Mission Possible? You have 3 hours to do Local SEO. Which top 5 sites do you go Social Bookmark, Local Search Engine Submit and Directory List.
Mission Possible? Here is a test. Suppose you had 3 hours (okay 7) to go and submit links, etc, on Social Bookmarking, Local Search Engines and Directories, which top 5 or more of each would you do? (Assuming your on-page is already sweetened). I just got 2 more clients and I need to get started on a few things for each. Thankful for all your advice.............

Franchise sites on subdomains
I've been asked by a client to optimise a a webpage for a location i.e. London. Turns out that the location is actually a franchise of the main company. When the company launch a new franchise, so far they have simply added a new page to the main site, for example: mysite.co.uk/sub-folder/london They have so far done this for 10 or so franchises and task someone with optimising that page for their main keyword + location. I think I know the answer to this, but would like to get a back up / additional info on it in terms of ranking / seo benefits. I am going to suggest the idea of using a subdomain for each location, example: london.mysite.co.uk Would this be the correct approach. If you think yes, why? Many thanks,
