Is this a good way to create engaging content?
-
Hi all,
I believe this is my first question in this forum, so be nice
I am an SEO consultant who has recently gone out and started my own SEO consultancy. Obviously, I now find myself in a place where I am trying to create good content for my website visitors. Maybe it's link bait, or more than likely it's a way to hold myself up as an expert in the industry, while providing visitors to my site some reason to keep on coming back.
As I love whiteboard Friday, I did consider - and I'm not ruling it out in the future - creating my own whiteboard Friday videos discussing the SEO issues I was focussing on. In the meantime, I am thinking of posting up SEOmoz's whiteboard Friday videos and then making my own comments and insights for my website visitors.
So, what I really wanted to ask - do you guys think this is a good idea, a valid way of creating good content and has merit/credibility?
http://www.nustudio.com.au/local-seo-the-basics/ contains an example of what I am talking about.
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks Jennifer. It's good to have the SEOmoz seal of approval. I have created a link to the blog post now.

Done!
Thanks for your advice

Hi Steve,
Using the video is perfectly fine, but only if you show that it was created by us and link back to the original post and not just to the refer a friend page. Let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks!

To begin with, I believe you have to give all credit to SEOmoz for the video. So maybe a caption below the video crediting SEOmoz, then maybe a "How can you use this information"?
Also instead of an "SEO Tip" why don't you do an "SEO tip of the week", that gives the tip more value and makes users aware that this information will be updated on a weekly basis. -
Fair point about attribution - I'll update the post on my website now.
-
I think that as long as you are offering something to users then it is definitely an interesting and credible way to build links.
If you simply dictate back what Rand is saying in the Whiteboard Friday vids then no, but if you add your own expertise and insights to the points that have been discussed then it would be great.
I know I would be interested in something like this.
Matt.

Steve,
On the whole I don't see a problem with it. I am big on attribution if we use someone else' content and would suggest that you provide attribution within the caption and/or on mouseover even though it is on the feed. Something like ...from SEOmoz, a leader in Search Engine Optimization thought and practice. (this is simply a quick example)
As to the question, I think it is a good idea, is a valid way of creating good content (so long is you remember good attribution), and is credible.
Best,
Robert

Thanks Matt, I like your Blackboard Monday spin on things!
More specifically, do you think that embedding the SEOmoz videos and making comment on those is valid/credible/interesting/link worthy?
-
Hi Steve,
I have seen quite a lot of these kind of Whiteboard Fridayesque videos created by SEO agencies. I think that they are a great way of making what would be a slightly boring article, quite enjoyable to watch/listen.
This kind of content will also encourage sharing through the likes of social media routes a lot more, which as I'm sure you are aware, can be great for building a few more links.
What I would suggest is to maybe incorporate your own spin on the traditional whiteboard Friday; something unique to you. For example, it could be something as simple as 'Blackboard Monday', where you get out the old school chalkboard! Or maybe using some sort of slideshow in the background. This will just help you stand out from the crowd a bit more.
Overall though, a good idea, and it is one that I have been considering myself!
Matt.

Buy domain, redirect, get all the good links (+link juice) and disavow the spammy ones?
There is a domain for sale that has a quite nice profile and a lot of good backlinks, but also quite a few spammy ones. This domain has a Spam Score of 14% acc. to Moz Link explorer, ours has only 2%. My questions: 1. The domain and the good backlinks are related to or close to our content/keywords. But we are worried whether the "spammy" ones will hurt us. Does anyone has experience with this? 2. Would it help if we disavow the spammy backlinks afterwards? And if so, how do we do that? Add new domain to search console, disavow the bad links and then redirect the entire domain to our domain or redirect the domain first and then disavow from our property? Many thanks for your help!

Duplicate content
Hi mozzers, I've been doing some broken link building and it's been going quite well. I've made a high value page and asked webmasters to link to it to replace the 404s. My page was ranking on google, not well, you had to copy/paste a portion of the page for it showup. Sadly another webmaster has posted my exact post on their blog and now when you search for a portion of text, the copied page shows up on google instead of mine. He has give me the credit for it and linked to my page. Am I at risk of losing credit for my work and links as the copied page is ranking? Or will google figure it out as my page will have more links and the copied page links to me. Thanks

When you are manually posting to blogs, how closely related does the content of the blog have to be to the website?
For instance, if the website is for a hotel, would it be acceptable to post on travel blogs?

Trading Backlinks a good idea?
New to the "backlinking" party. Wondering if its 'good practice' to trade links with other websites within a like-industry. We've been receiving a lot of emails from other websites asking us to trade links. Is this a good link building practice anymore? Thanks!

Guest Blogging - Build a relationship with a few blogs and post only there or post a few on as many good blogs as possible?
I'm curious which strategy is better in the short term and in the long-term? Part of my link building strategy involves contacting bloggers and posting some guest blogs on their sites. Now there are advantages with posting on a few blogs and creating a link between you and the blog readers and the blog owner. It also saves time trying to contact blog owners etc. However would my time be better spent contacting hundreds of blogs and seeing where I can guest blog and then post on as many as possible; in order to have a diverse number of links going back to my website? What do you think is the best option and why?

Any good content sites with good quality links?
I have some content which is still relevant and interesting but not really suitable for my current websites. I have been thinking of using this on an article site to generate some links back to my sites, but I am wary about this due to Google's targeting of content sites. I currently have good PR's on Squidoo and Hubpages which link back and work quite well. Can anyone suggest any others or any ideas how to use this content for SEO purposes? Is using it for article submissions to get links short sited?
