New Articles and Posts - what key word to focus on?
-
I have a few pages on my site focused on key words...such as office design Birmingham. The contact page and a tag page. http:www.businessinteriors.co.uk/tag/office-design-birmingham/
Now I recently published an article about a big new office design in birmingham for a company....and I tagged it as office design birmingham naturally...put it in the category for Birmingham office news....and then also put office design Birmingham at key strategic seo points....
the result being this article now seems to rank higher than my office design Birmingham pages?!
My question is this....how should I optimise posts? Lets say I put 3 or 4 posts on my webiste/blog about an "office design Birmingham"....I dont want to rank for "HSBC office design birmingham"....I want the article to lend weight to my office design Birmingham credentials ...so I focus on office design birmingham?
I dont really want my posts to rank very high though...I want them to help my key pages "float". I'm very confused how to optimise my posts. If I do it too well, they out rank the "old" pages that I actually want people to visit?!
Mmm, thanks for pointers!

I'm not sure what the advantage of making the tag pages into pages is.
I guess I could hide the tag part of the url...so
www.businessinteriors.co.uk/tag/office-design-birmingham
becomes
www.businessinteriors.co.uk/office-design-birmingham
The tag set up of wordpress lets me set up individual "pages" for hundreds of keywords,a albeit not easily customised.
Does a "page" look different to google? And treated differently? I settled on a tag structure for targeting my keywords, rather than targeted pages with posts being pulled in by tag, because it is not easy to show posts from a tag in the content area of a page without getting down and dirty with code. I found a plugin (associated posts) but the developer wanted to charge me...the posts looked rubbish on the page...and the last straw was another charge for the "upgrade"!
I assumed the tag structure was only so much a disadvantage to me because they are harder to play with than pages. (I got round this by using a little plug in that pulls the tag header and description into the tag page as unique content). If you think a tag page is "recognised" by google and treated as some low level library...than maybe I ned to re-think :-s

I would say having just looked at your site it’s an internal linking issue, as you’ve said it looks like Google is seeing your latest post at the more important page.
There are a couple of option I can think off which shouldn’t be to difficult to implement (I’m assuming your using Word Press).
1: create a manual menu and add the links to the tags page you want to rank and try adding that menu to the side bar, this should be relatively simple to setup.
2: (this is my preferred option but it’s a little harder to setup) turn the tag pages your using into actual pages and use a little bit of script to pull through the relevant posts you’ve done, you can then include those pages in your navigation or again in the side bar, this (if done correctly) would mean your loss the “tag” from the URL and because it is then included into the navigation or side bar would be given more weight in Google.
The other thing I would do I link to the URL itself either in each post, something like “see more article about XXX here” at the end of the post or find a nice natural way to link to it in the article itself, I personally don’t really like tag clouds or tagging on post as it can be seen as being a little spammy as you end up with a group of links with target keywords listed at the bottom of each post.
Let me know if how you get on or if you need any more advice.
Thanks

Great feedback, thanks,
I am linking from the posts to the pages I'd prefer to rank (through the tag cloud at the bottom).
The site structure comment is interesting. My posts have a pokey url - as it is right next to "root" deliberately. So an office design birmingham post news peice looks like this:
http://www.businessinteriors.co.uk/office-design-birmingham-law-society/
but the tag page I'd like to rank higher is this:
http://www.businessinteriors.co.uk/tag/office-design-birmingham/
So it might be the posts are appearing more important to google?....to make matters "worse" - the new post is in "latest news" and therefore gets linked to from my "important" front page in latest news section. But the tag page, which is more like an archive to google I suspect...is never linked to from the front page, I'd just like it to rank well for office design birmingham...because that's where all the information is...not in the new post!
Also a new post, if intertesting gets tweeted shared and linked too from other pages...but the tag page never does! Making my post ranking higher than anything else dilemma worse!
Interesting dilemma....I imagine a common problem mmm

Hi,
this sounds like quite a nice problem to have to be honest but there are two ways I'd address this.
1: make sure you post is linking through to the page you want to rank that way when google crawl your site they should start to see lots of good content pointing to that page your trying to rank first and give it more weighting, you might also want to look at your site structure to see if you can improve which pages google is seeing as important that way as well.
2: a win is a win why not look at how you are moving users from your post to your "money making" pages, this is a good practice any way as once you've sorted you site structure you'll hopefully start to pick up some nice long tail keywords from your posts.
Thanks

Tag Clouds in Google Despite Canonical Links for Single Tags/Articles
I am frustrated to see a lot tag clouds in Google even though I programmed my tagged pages to display a canonical link to the linking article if the is only one result for the tag cloud. The goal to to make sure that the article, which is of better quality than the tag page, ends up in Google without a bunch of thin tag pages getting in there. For instance this article should be in Google and this tag should not be because that tag has a canonical URL for that article. I do not have a lot of experience with tag cloud SEO because I prefer to limit such pages to categories, but I have found tag clouds to be important for aggregating information for specific issues, people, or places that are not already a site category. Some tags I have used to power social media pages that update automatically from RSS feeds for their related tag archives. That is quite useful for pages like that. Should I start using Meta noindex for those instead of rel canonical? I have already done that for author profiles because author profiles get a lot of on site links compared to individual articles because my gridviews use javascript for paging. The same is true for the tags, so if a tag is tagged in 30 articles it will have links from 30 articles but if those articles are not in the latest 20 for that tag only the latest 20 will have links back from the tag archive. I also suspect having a lot of tag pages with little content to negatively impact my indexing rate. I will see a number of recent tag pages added before new articles.

Internal Website Linking from Syndicated Blog Posts
Does it help, hurt, or do nothing for my website's SEO if I do internal linking from syndicated blog posts (on my blog) to my website pages? For example, a syndicated blog post on winterizing your house has instances of "homeowners insurance" linking to my webpage on homeowners insurance. Proper canonicalization is done as well.

Change SEO focus from homepage to other page on the domain
Hi, we are (were) ranking top 5 with gietvloer-wand.nl by focussing the homepage for a certain keyword. We're trying to change to focus from the homepage to /gietvloeren with more content / information. How to go about this? how to tell Google that /gietvloeren is more relevant / important then than the homepage? Or any experiences how long it will take for Google to see that the page has more information than the homepage? It's a test and any experiences you can share would be great. Thanks!

Potential new URL structure for my ecommerce site
At the moment my site suffers from a flat product category structure where over 600 items fall into one category alone. This category is then filtered using a faceted search which appends query strings to the category URL and changes the products displayed on the page. At the moment our product category URL is as follows, www.domain.com/category/greeting-cards and this holds all cards including occasions such as anniversary, birthdays etc and also themes such as animal cards, contemporary cards etc I have proposed changes to my developer to change this structure to include subcategories. I can now go two subcategories deep. For example, "greeting cards > occasions > birthday cards" or "greeting cards > themes > animals". This is reflected in the new URL structure, which has been proposed, www.domain.com/greeting-cards/occasions/birthday-cards. In this URL do I need "occasions" in the URL as I don't think it adds much value to the user? Would I be better of having www.domain.com/greeting-cards/birthday-cards. If a user searches for "birthday cards" then I think this would be more relevant?

Language for URLs on new international websites
We are due to launch our new site and it will be targeting an international market. We have setup these new sites in the following way www.website.com/fr/content-goes-here www.website.com/es/content-goes-here This has been done in conjunction with setting up the parameters in GWT and making sure it is optimised for the language itself, and that countries search engine. But our web dev team have said that the URLs at the moment will be in english and not the native language, so if you were on the french version of our site you would see the url in english and not french. Will this negatively affect the site for SEO, and who else would think it would be negative from a usability perspective? Any help is appreciated.

Best practice for introducing new landing page to my site?
I have a client, and want to know the best way to add new, keyword specific landing pages to their site and link to it in a logical way that isn't spammy. Example: My homepage targets “Adelaide Cars” I also want to target “Melbourne Cars” which I would do via a targeted landing page. How then would I logically link to this landing page? As Google gets better at spotting un-natural content, I’d like to know how to introduce this new page to get the best traction. If I was to just create the page, it would not make sense to have it in the main navigation. Same goes from various industry type terms. Eg. pest control and exterminator. How do you target both and still have a logical sitemap and page structure that Google will like and make sense to users.

Should I be afraid to launch new website?
I have been redesigning my website in the last 2 months. I'm almost ready to finally launch it. Now I wonder how it will effect my rankings. I have taken a few measures to avoid problems such as: I kept the page names as they are. I kept the structure of the website Optimized the structure of my pages which should benefit my SEO rather then harm it. Yet, if I would experience a drop in rankings, could I regain my rankings by switching to the previous website?

Accepting Guest Posts On My Blog
I run a static website with a wordpress blog attached (www.example.com/blog). I'm thinking of allowing guest to post to the blog mainly just to get some fresh content on the blog instead of my own rantings. Is this a good idea from an seo perspective? I do know that I will get mostly people promoting their own sites but if the content is topically relevant and it's of some quality this should be okay, right? Any links in their post would be no follow so I wont loose there. If this is a go, how do I promote it so I get more people to posts? Am I thinking right on this? Good idea?
