Pages and Keyword Structures, what do you think?
-
Hi,
So I think the best way to do this would be to layout a fictitious example so here it is.
Lets say you offer plumbing and painting services and want to start targeting 3 more locations near by.
'Plumber +Location' and 'Painter +Location' both get the exact same search so are equal.
I would personally create a new page called '/plumber-and-painter-location/'
Then have the title tag contain both keywords 'Plumber and Painter +Location'.
BUT... maybe it would be better to have a page for each as this would then be more relevant SEO wise and the customer looking for a painter wouldn't be presented with non-relevant plumbing content.
But this does mean now instead of 3 pages you need 6. And if you bolted on another services such as Plastering instead of the 3 pages you need 9.
Basically If you offered Plumbing, Painting & Plastering in 3 different locations how would you structure it?
Cheers

Thanks everyone for the responses given me a good idea now so I guess it's just a case of pen to paper and drawing out the structure.
Thanks to Ryan as well for input.
-
Ryan is right - that will be indeed a very good approach. However I think is hard to have unique quality content for each Painting for each location and if you are not able to do that I would merge the locations.
If you can follow Ryan's proposal you have a winning strategy indeed.

Chris and eyepaq shared good viewpoints. I will build on what they shared and offer a modified approach.
If you were to start a new company "Joe's Plumbing, Painting and Plastering" then here is the approach I would take:
-
On day 1, there would be a /plumbing page, /painting page and a /plastering page. These pages would offer detailed information about the services offered.
-
Over time, after a few projects were completed in a given area, you could create a /plumbing-chicago page. That page would share details about projects completed in the given area. Add pictures, addresses and other details. Testimonials work great too! Any details to offer rich information specific to that area. I would not recommend moving in this direction unless you can offer a quality page.

Setting up three separate pages for each "location" is going to be a disservice to your site. Google is concerned about the content on the page. Don't use too much URL and title tag trickery or it will have the exact opposite SEO effect that you're looking for where you won't rank for any of the locations.
I would HIGHLY suggest that you consider moving your plumbing and painting services onto different websites. The two fields really do not compliment each other and you'd benefit from being able to create websites that are more relevant. For instance, create a plumbing site that list the services you provide (We snake drains, waterproofing, pipe repair, toilet replacement, etc.), locations, maybe a how-to section, Q&A area, contact pages, etc. Even better would then be to expand on each service such as a full page on waterproofing, a full page on toilet repair, etc. And that way the entire site is focused JUST on plumbing and it will have a better shot at performing well on the search engines for plumbing terms since it's more relevant to plumbing.
As for the location dilemma, just list the areas that you service in the content of the page. If the locations are all within a specific county or region, it's best to focus on that instead. Then you can simply create a title tag saying "ABC Plumbing Service & Repair - Proudly Serving Location A, B & C". A good dose of keyword research would serve you well before you construct your title tags. Find out what people are searching for and especially search volume regarding "service + location". Here in the states, people search for "Atlanta plumber" FAR more frequently than they would "Roswell plumber". But counties that have multiple cities work very well also. Research it.
I'd search out a consultant to help you in this process to get the best results. While I obviously would push us myself, there are hundreds here who can also help you out. We're everywhere.

Hi,
There are somehow in the same industry but not really the same niche. Some people can look for the entire set of 2 or 3 services but I think most will only look for one. That being said I would suggest having a separate landing page for each keyword+location as long as you won't have the same text on all pf the pages - as duplicate content won't help you rank with any of them for sure.
if you have only 2-3 location then the solution is easy: you will have one page for Plumber for all 3 locations - so that means the other way around - don't merge the services but the locations.
You can actually optimize for all 3 locations for the same page easier and it will also be relevant.
Think more like a topic page for Painter for 3 different locations. There are a lot of samples available online for people that are optimizing a product / service for several locations on one page and doing that avoiding duplicate content across the site for having the same info with different locations.
That's my personal opinion based on a few similar optimisation I've done that worked really well.

Page not being ranked properly
Hi, Wondering if someone could possibly shed some light on why some of our pages are not being ranked properly on Google. For example this page https://www.mypetzilla.co.uk/dog-breeds Keyword "Dog Breeds" we can't be found on and we are absolutely baffled why? Could it be that we are listing all 100 and something dog breeds on one page? Should we introduce pagination or load more as user scrolls down. This page has been up for at least 4 years. Any suggestion or advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks

An affiliate website uses datafeeds and around 65.000 products are deleted in the new feeds. What are the best practises to do with the product pages? 404 ALL pages, 301 Redirect to the upper catagory?
Note: All product pages are on INDEX FOLLOW. Right now this is happening with the deleted productpages: 1. When a product is removed from the new datafeed the pages stay online and are showing simliar products for 3 months. The productpages are removed from the categorie pages but not from the sitemap! 2. Pages receiving more than 3 hits after the first 3 months keep on existing and also in the sitemaps. These pages are not shown in the categories. 3. Pages from deleted datafeeds that receive 2 hits or less, are getting a 301 redirect to the upper categorie for again 3 months 4. Afther the last 3 months all 301 redirects are getting a customized 404 page with similar products. Any suggestions of Comments about this structure? 🙂 Issues to think about:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Zanox
- The amount of 404 pages Google is warning about in GWT
- Right now all productpages are indexed
- Use as much value as possible in the right way from all pages
- Usability for the visitor Extra info about the near future: Beceause of the duplicate content issue with datafeeds we are going to put all product pages on NOINDEX, FOLLOW and focus only on category and subcategory pages.0 -
How do I best optimise a page with 3 keywords that all contain 1 common word?
I am new to this so still getting to grips with a few things. I have a page here that I want to optimise for 3 keyword phrases. Towels, Egyptian Cotton Towels, Personalised Towels http://www.towelsrus.co.uk/towels/catlist_fnct561.htm SEOmoz reports a huge number of instances of the word towels overall. Title 3 URL 1 Meta Desc 5 H1 3 H2-4 1 Body 83 B / Strong 1 IMG ALT 11 Total Keyword Usage for this Page = 108How could i restructure meta tags and descriptions to still rank for these terms but reduce the level the word towels? Similarly as this is a category how can I reduce the term towels from other on page links? Also any extra advice regarding on page optimisation would be greatly appreciated to help our efforts

Site structure question
Hello Everyone, I have a question regarding site structure and I would like to mastermind it with everyone. So I am optimizing a website for a Ford Dealership in Boston, MA. The way the site architecture is set up is as follows: Home >>>> New Inventory >>> Inventory Page (with search refinement choices) After you refine your search (lets say we choose a Ford F150 in white) it shows a page with images, price information and specs. (Nothing the bots or users can sink their teeth into) My thoughts are to create category pages for each Ford model with awesome written content and THEN link to the inventory pages. So it would look like this: Home >>> New Inventory >>> Ford 150 Awesome Category Page>>>>Ford F150 Inventory Page I would work hard at getting these category pages to rank for the vehicle for our GEO targeted locations. Here is my questions: Would you be annoyed to first land on a category page with lots of written text, reviews images and videos first and then link off to the inventory page. Or would you prefer to go right from the new inventory page to the actual inventory page and start looking for vehicles? Thanks you so much, Bill

What to call pages
I reckon I've bagged one of the most interesting SEO projects of the year. My new client is selling vibrators. The site is not even in development yet but they want to make it fun and friendly and take away the stigma and "seediness" of the product. Anyway, the owenr has presented a list of "places" within this site which are places where the products are going to be showcased. These are along the lines of, Royal Rabbits Palace, Clitoral Courtyard, Dungeon Dildos, Magical G-arden etc. (there is a bit shreky/fariy tale thing going on) Clearly, these places add a lot to the look and feel of the site but as URL's and Titles, they are clearly not optimal in an SEO sense. What is for the best...making sure we shift the owner back into SEO best practice or hope that having these weird and wonderful names for the pages is going to add enough to the user experience to make it worthwhile to let through. FYI, did you know you can get vibrators that you can plug an ipod into. Man, I've seen some weird things researching this client!

Creating new pages for geo targeted keywords
What's the best way to go about creating new pages for geo targeted keywords for a business? I ask because, these keywords are areas that they provide service to, but the brick and mortar business is not located. I've already run into problems trying to put too many locations onto one page. What's the best way to attack content for these new pages in order to get these geo keywords in there?
