Should we Have Our Anchor Text Changed?
-
Unfortunately, we used a SEO company to do some link building for us and they used a lot of marketed keywords as anchor text instead of branded. About a month into the project, we saw a drop in ranking for those keywords. From what I've read, Google is cracking down on marketed keywords in anchor text (when it is done in a spammy looking way). I have contacted the company that did the work and they said they could update the anchor text. So my questions are:
- Should we asked them to change the anchor text to branded keywords or should we just leave them?
2) If we do have them changed, do you think Google will look at that as another spammy move?
Any input would be great. Lesson learned not to used a reputable SEO company and for us not to monitor how they were submitting links.

Again, thanks for the input from everyone. One of the things that I have noticed is that they did some link building to some specific categories on our website with specific anchor text and they ranked well at the beginning and the dropped off the face of the earth while some of the other categories that they didn't do link building on have continued to rank ok. Also, about a week ago we noticed our organic search results drop significantly. Could that be an identifier that Google has penalized our site due to those potentially spammy looking links?

I agree with Mat. I think it's just depends how much of an effort it is. Think of it like this, what if these links were not created by you...but a competition trying to beat you. Could you do anything then ? Not much. So if you think from that context, time and resources (and money) is better spent on building better content and links vs trying to remove links.
-
Not everyone will agree, however I'd say leave them for now - unless you are seeing anything particularly worrying.
Bad links could case a ranking drop for two reasons: On one hand you could be getting a penalty - even without a warning in webmaster tools. On the other it could just be that you are not getting the benefit from those links that you were.
The second is the most common. The remedy to that is "build more, better, links". That same remedy solves a lot of other problems too.
If a link is poor quality you may as well get it removed rather than changing the anchor. However I'd still rather put resources in to new links rather than removing old ones unless you are particularly concerned.

We haven't received an unnatural link warning message from Google in our webmaster counsel yet. Just don't want to take the risk of getting one.
It is a pretty high number if exact match anchor text. I think it is around 20 links per key word anchor text and around 15 sets of matched keywords. They look like a lot of directory submissions and I don't know if they are related. I don't know how they can get them changed (I'm almost afraid to ask).
Thanks for the input.

Ron 1. Is it a considerably high number of links ? 2. Are these sites related ? 3. Are they all similar kinds of links ? If not, how can they control them so easily ? If there are any visible patterns of artificial links and if they are not related, you could essentially keep a cleaner profile by removing the links completely. Did you also remove a un-natural links warning ? If yes, then definitely consider removing the links. If not, and the links are good quality, you could maybe tweak them to brand, brand + anchor and so on...just not too many exact match anchor text links. Just do a complete audit of your link profile and act accordingly. I hope this helps.

Should you ever change your anchor text ?
Hello I have a question about anchors. I have done all my own seo over the last 3 years, with tools from various sites. I had an seo audit done about 1 month ago and was told my link profile was very natural. They had one recommendation. To go back over my link profile and ask some webmasters if they would change the anchor from the name of my site or my url to a more seo friendly phrase. This seemed logical. I never did a lot of anchor text just name or site or url. Anyway, over last 4 weeks I have messaged several webmasters and asked to have anchor text changed to something along the lines of the keywords Im targeting. Tedious task to go through all the links but I changed several anchors to what was recommended. I was also out link building at same time. These last links and I got several of them all natural links after 16 hours work days. Are all will seo friendly anchors, because as Ive gotten more experienced my links have gotten more in lines of what is "seo friendly" or at least I hoped. I asked one webmaster to change my anchor and he warned me I would be slapped with a penguin penalty and wouldn't recommend I do this. I have already done this to several of my links. Then today the new seomoz update came up and I was down on DA and PA by 3-4 points. Do these have anything to do with one another and have I been given bad advice and can I fix it if I have ? Sorry about long post just a little confused. I don't want to step into penalty land and not know I did.

Can a sitewide backlink with exact anchor text penalize my website?
A few years ago, I exchanged a link with another website. In the meantime, this other website grew quite fast and now they just added a forum. The backlink from their website is sitewide and is using the anchor text "best web hosting". According to Google, this backlink now appears on 117,000 pages of the same domain. Yesterday, I just got a warning from Google: "We've detected that some of your site's pages may be using techniques that are outside Google's Webmaster Guidelines..." Could that sitewide link be one of the causes? Of course I know there are tons of bad links to my site but I'm wondering if I should get this one removed. Thank you for your help and sorry for my english. Stephane

Should you guest post on a site that allows unrelated anchor text?
Suppose a blog has pretty good authority and quality articles but allows guest posters to use really random anchor text in their bios like Miami mexican restaurants when the blog is about blogging. Is there a risk that all the outbound links on the site will be devalued?

Anchor text... How hard should one try?
I'm looking at a lot of competitor's sites, and they only seem to have gone after root domain anchor text in their link-building campaigns. Since I am just launching and am essentially a one-man band (with some hired help), is it worth my while to attempt to optimize individual keywords or pages at this point, or should I just do as they have done, and try to get domain-name links wherever I can? For that matter, should I spend more time going for the low-hanging fruit of followed blog comments, forum posts etc, or emailing influencers to try and get editorial links? Sorry if that last one is a bit broad, and thanks very much in advance for any and all help.

I have been under the understanding that it is best to vary your anchor text.
I have been working on a keyword term "boat covers" - however a link from the manufacturer site with the anchor text something like "Company Name Boat Covers" would be just a good or better. Is this correct? Thanks, Brook

Has there been a change in the Competitive Domain Analysis?
I've noted the total number of links has dropped drastically on multiple reports. Is there something new in the Competitive Domain Report or is it really just my clients? Also I've noticed that all of my clients have seen slight decreases in MozTrust - is this related to your reports analysis of panda? Thanks!!
