Universal Local Results & Venice Update - What's what?
-
There is some buzz in the community regarding the Venice Update of the Google Algorithm. Google has said the following about this:
"Improvements to ranking for local search results. [launch codename “Venice”] This improvement improves the triggering of Local Universal results by relying more on the ranking of our main search results as a signal."
source:http://insidesearch.blogspot.com/2012/02/search-quality-highlights-40-changes.htmlA lot of Blog posts refer to this update and discuss the effect of the location of the googler on the ranking of "standard/traditional results". My question is:
Does the term 'Local Universal Results' include "standard/traditional" results or is it used by Google to refer to 'Google Places' Results in the standard SERP?
So, are the results that are impacted by Venice recognizable as 'Local Results' (by the teardrop and google Maps and so on), or does it influence 'standard/traditiona results' as well, other than simply pushing them down by inserting Google Places results in the SERP?
Thanks a lot!

Hi Harald,
I agree with you...the terminology has become confusing. And glad to see that you are a Mike Blumenthal fan. As Mike states in his post to which you've linked, local results are essentially all blended. There used to be very significant differences between different types of results (7 packs vs. blended) for example, but in my opinion, what we are seeing now is that Google is moving it all into more or less one big lump. The actual Maps results remain somewhat different, but I think it's fairly safe to say (for the moment, anyway) that anything you see in the SERPs could be termed 'Local Universal Results'. It's not a very good name, granted, and I can understand the confusion on this.
Hope this explanation helps.

Hi Harald,
Thanks for your reply!
Both the blogposts you mention refer to 'standard organic results' being shown due to ´geographical factors´. However, before the Venice Update the term ´Local Universal Results´ was used quite often used to describe places results in the standard SERP. examples: http://blumenthals.com/blog/, http://flashious.com/how-to/how-can-an-out-of-town-company-compete-with-local-competition/
I guess we can thus say that the SEO community uses this term for both Google Places results and standard organic results that are shown due to geographical factors.
Can I safely assume that Google shares our interpretation of this term? Alternatively, if 'Local Universal Results' would be synonymous to 'Google Places Results', then the Venice update would only be impacting queries that trigger 'Places Results'.

Hi Expand, First of all I want to tell you about what is Google Venice.
Google is rolling out the Venice update this week and has buried the information in a long list of 40 algorithm changes. In reality Venice is a really major change to how they show results and one that probably took a huge amount of work.
Improvements to ranking for local search results. [launch codename “Venice”] This improvement improves the triggering of Local Universal results by relying more on the ranking of our main search results as a signal.
Local Search Results 'Venice' Update From Google.
I hope that you will found the solution.

Planning an analytical article focused on link building. Do you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see analyzed in a data-backed study?
So far, I'm working backwards. Goal: product a data-rich piece of content that will help other agencies or internal marketing departments explain trends in link building and show the value in it. Means to gather data: Moz, Ahrefs, manual searching What is missing right now is the angle. I was thinking about taking 100 high volume keywords in the SaaS/software space, and looking for trends in the sites that rank well with regards to search volumes and number of links etc. This feels a bit weak to me. Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any insights so thank you for taking the time!

Can you have same product name and description on a local and national site at the same time without getting dinged by google?
My question is regarding a few sites we own which are all related. The local site (http://location.company.com) is a extension of the national main site (http://company.com.) We are in the process of launching these new sites as replacements to older sites we created years ago. My first question regarding SEO is it important to the search engines to have unique product content on both sites even though they promote the same products (with same pictures) and brands or can we keep the same product names and descriptions as I hope? I ask this because essentially they are the same site but with with the exception of the local extension..... We thought by re writing all the content on the main pages of both sites along with different; title tags, page title and meta descriptions that that would make the sites different enough to get away with this. Is that the case? Thank you in advance for your assistance, Jake

Anyone else want to add a webmaster tools category to Q&A?
This could be all inclusive of both Google and Bing (a la webmaster tools), or, add more specificity with two additional categories:

Listing multiple locations on Facebook for local business and top platforms for local SEO
What is the easiest way to register multiple locations for a business to Facebook local? I'm sure we've all had the challenge of multiple local business listings for a client. The set up is just busy work, but the verification can be an issue with some busier or less organized locations. I'm interested to see if anyone has a more eloquent solution to achieve this. I also have a second question as far as local listings go - how would you rank the most influential local listing platforms? Thanks, Bill

Local SEO Practice: Creating a Fictitious Business?
Has anyone tried fabricating a fake, brick-and-mortar store as an SEO experiment? Sort of along the lines of what Starwood is doing (check out this Wikipedia experiment with the Test Galaxy Sheraton), but with a legitimate physical address and all? Was it useful? And are there any potential legal troubles that could arise from borrowing a vacant address? I'm thinking this could be helpful for my Intern to gain practical experience in local SEO, without the politics of working for a client But I wouldn't want to blight that address for future occupants if the experiment went horribly awry. We could instead offer pro bono services to a small business with a limited web presence – that would be useful to her, and constructive. But I'd like to have a better understanding of what signals Google looks for when deciding whether to index a website in local search, and see whether possible to dupe those algos. What are your thoughts, Mozzers? .
