Local SEO - My Ranking depends on City of the user - Rank tracker is failing
-
Hello,
The search results differ completly depending on the user location.
The websites yoagbarcelona.org targets poeple from barcelona:
Barcelona;
User location Barcelona web is on the last position on first page:
http://screencast.com/t/ZsIeiCeLRM
User location New York 1st.
http://screencast.com/t/PzaLbwWW4xx:
Also SEO MOZ rank tracker is showing me that im no 1in google.es for yoga barcelona.
The problem is that this is only true for users outside the region
The site has very bad ranking in google places and you need to go down to page 10 until my yoga studio shows up in the maps results.
I did some hardcore citation building and signed up in almost all local directories that google pulls data from within one month and optimised the google places / plus profile.
Please give me some advice how I could overcome the problem.???
Especially on what part should i focus when optimising the page. ???
Are there any other good strategies for getting into google places ???
Do I need more links from local sites or how is this local serps working ???

Hi Daria,
That is tough if these wrong citations are stemming from personal websites rather than business directories. I can see how it will be harder to get them changed. You are doing what would be advised - writing to the owners to request that they either edit or remove the citation. With directories, it's more formalized, so easier. But, the process is the same - finding everything you can and slogging through trying to get them changed. If a couple of weeks go by and you haven't heard from the bloggers, I would write again. You could also try commenting on the blog posts that reference the business.
Finally, you can also start a thread in the Google and Your Business Forum to discuss your inability to remove old citations:
http://groups.google.com/a/googleproductforums.com/forum/#!forum/business
I'm glad a refresher on the guidelines helped you to identify and issue you were having. Good luck, Daria!

Hi,
I will try my best to delete all wrong citations. Are their any good resources how to do this?
I aproched the site owners but most of them are not answering.
In one case it's a .wordpress blog and no contact at all. I already aproched wordpress but they told my that they need a court decision to give me contact or take the content down.
I will keep fighting on this.
Thanks for the Places Guidelines. I checked thema again and I din't know that I have to put suite number on line 2. Pretty anoing that in Spain only post card verification exist so now I have to wait for a 2 weeks for that little change (suite no on 2nd line instead of 1st adress line)
Thanks
Best Regards

Hi Daria,
Absolutely, fix those citations, if you can. Improper citations confuse Google and can drag your rankings down. In fact, your ability to rank could be being cut in half by the fact that Google is associating two different business names with the same address. That would be the next step.
And, just to be sure you have these - here are Google's Places Guidelines, to be certain you haven't accidentally violated any of them:
http://support.google.com/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528
I think cleaning up those citations will be very important, Daria.

Hello Miriam,
The situation is still the same. User location outside Spain no 1 and on the bottom of page 1 for the local user location after 10 days.
I carefully run though your 5 points list but I can only think of point 1 and 5 to affect my rankings negativly.
There are some incorrect old citation around that may harm local search relults. Also stange is that I have to go very far down to find the business in the maps results as the profile is pretty optimized but not spamy.
https://plus.google.com/111033204065378971279/about?gl=es&hl=de
Buisness name is Aditi Yoga Barcelona but some citations have another buissness name but same other details. around 5%
-
Hi Daria,
Citations and links are both important, for sure. Did you run through my 5 point list to be sure you are okay on all of those points? I think this is important.
-
Hello,
Thanks for all those good suggestions.
So far everybody agrees that the local citations are important but this is exactly where I started. As I'm more interesed in maps results I started stright away with citation building and be in all relevant industry and local directories as yelp, qype and all the directories where google pulls data from for Barcelona local buisnesses.
I also did use Whitespark but I found it as usefull as searching for my competitors phone number and business name in google.
So I was really expecting that I would be the other way round. Having a strong position only in the local searches but it just happend the other way round.
As next step I will do some quality linkbuilding offering discounts and other incentives to attractive communities, guestblogging, article marketing and forum posting.

Hello, Daria,
As both Brent & Donnie have mentioned, both citations and links are important parts of a local SEO campaign. The fact that you are doing well organically, but failing to break into the blended local rankings could indicate:
-
That you haven't yet made the right efforts with your Google+ profile and 3rd party directory listings.
-
That you are located too far from the center of business (are you located right next to the other businesses being ranked in the local pack or are you far from them?)
-
That you are suffering from a penalty for real or perceived spammy behavior (such as violation of Google's guidelines, review spamming, etc.)
-
That you haven't received enough reviews to surpass competitors.
-
That your business is too new to begin outranking older competitors.
There are other factors to consider. Those are top ones.
If you've just started building citations (thumbs up on Whitespark's tool), understand that it will take some time to for these to go into effect and begin helping the listing. The same applies to linkbuilding.
I also see room for improvement with the website itself. While it's great that you've got your name, address and phone number on your footer and contacto page, from what I can see, there are only 4 pages currently on the site. Your Horrarios y Precios page lists classes, but could not find a text description of what these classes are. I would expect a site like yours to have a unique page for each of its types of classes, and possibly pages for its wonderful instructors, too. If not unique pages for each, then at least a single page listings all of these things (optimized, of course, for Barcelona). I also do not see a blog on the site, and that might be something else to investigate. Out-writing your competitors can be a powerful approach to edging higher up in the SERPs.
Hope these thoughts help. Buena suerte!
Miriam

Brent explained it very well I'd like to help with your last two questions
"Are there any other good strategies for getting into google places ???"
Yes, get citations for your site. Not sure what they are in Barcelona, however in the us: yellopages.com; yelp.com; yahoo.com/local; citysearch.com; whitepages.com; chamber of commerce... Any citation site where you can list your company name address and phone number (website optional) will help. By getting citation you give credibility to your cite in Google eyes.
"Do I need more links from local sites or how is this local serps working ???"
Yes getting links from local sites is an excellent way to get better rankings locally. This will help you with your organic rankings for the term "yoga barcelona" or "barcelona yoga" or "yoga in barcelona". Ideally you want to anchor your links with a natural look (majority of your links should anchor with the URL/Brand name). I like to use SEOmoz keyword tracking tool to find my low hanging fruit (keywords with low competition and high local traffic).
-
Back when I had an agency, we'd use whitespark.
Have you tried Whitespark?
I've seen great-beautiful rank trackers that will sometimes overlook the obvious, like pulling from a country code version of Google w/out requiring a geographically-similar based IP.
I would look into proxies with similar locations to your user and hope you don't pull from the wonkiest data center.. which seems to happen to me all the time.
Rank tracking quality is definitely declining. The fluidity and dynamic results are so temperamental right now. Always changing. Hang in there, watch your impressions and traffic as well as rankings. It's almost becoming more of a novelty value or "big picture" value than traditional, "I rank #1 for this keyword" type mentality.

Switch to Separate URL Configurations for International SEO?
We run an ecommerce website and sell to customers in the US and Canada. We recently realized that the way we serve content to our users isn't Google's recommended way. We use locale-adaptive pages in that some content changes slightly depending on where we think the user is located based on their IP address. But the URL doesn't change. Google's stance on locale-adaptive - https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6144055?hl=en&ref_topic=2370587 That being said, the changes are quite minor. It is usually only pricing and currency that changes depending on if we determine the user to be based in Canada or the US. However, I understand that there can be problems related to this configuration because of GoogleBot primarily using a US-based IP. We decided that the best course of action for us is to serve US content as our default content on all of our existing URLs. And Canadian content would be served using new url paths such as: example.com**/en-ca/**product1. All of this would also be configured to use hreflang tags. The problem we have run into is that it is a pretty huge development challenge to reconfigure how the site serves content when we have been using locale-adaptive for over a year. So developer resources would be taken away from other tasks and put toward this one for a relatively long time. Based on this information and the fact that we would like to both rank better in Canada and to follow Google's recommendations, how important would you say this change would be? I realize this isn't a black and white question and it depends a lot on business goals and preferences. However, I need to be able to gauge as best as I can how necessary it is to do this in order to make the decision of whether to do it or not. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Redirect the main site to keyword-rich subfolder / specific page for SEO
Hi,
International SEO | | Awaraman
I have two questions. Question 1: is it worthwhile to redirect the main site to keyword-rich subfolder / specific page for SEO? For example, my company's webpage is www.example.com. Would it make sense to redirect the main site to address www.example.com/service-one-in-certain-city ? I am asking this as I have learned that it is important for SEO to have keywords in the URL, and I was thinking that we could do this and include the most important keywords to the subfolder / specific URL. What are the pros and cons and how important is it to include keywords to folders and page URLs. Should I create folders or pages just the sake of keywords? Question 2: Most companies have their main URL shown as www.example.com when you access their domain. However, some multi-language sites show e.g. www.example.com/en or www.example.com/en/main when you type the domain to your web browser to access the site. I undertstand that this is a common practice to use subdomains or folders to separate the language versions. My question is regarding the subfolder. Is it better to have only the subfolder shown (www.example.com/en) or should you also include the specific page's URL after the subfolder with keywords (www.example.com/en/main or www.example.com/en/service-one-in-certain-city)? I don't really understand why some companies show only the subfolder of a specific language page and some the page's URL after the subfolder. Thanks in advance, Sam0 -

SEO for Subdomains for different languages .com/fr, .com/es
Hi All, I was wondering how best to to approach optimisation of a site that exists on a single .com domain, but has different subfolders for different languages. The site is a .com and it has subfolders for French, Spanish, Russian and English. The business is situated in France and the vast majority of clients are French and English speakers. I've read that it's possible to geo target these subfolders using webmaster tools however I believe this is an inferior method of optimisation than having tld's. Just wondered if anyone had experience of htis and could provide any advice ? As they won't be rebuilding the site for another year or so I wondered if there were any quick wins? My second question is to do with how best to set these campaigns up within SEO Moz. would it be better to track at a subdomain or subfolder leverl (for different languages)? If someone could advise I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks, vantresca

Very fluctuating rankings
For a couple of years we're doing internet marketing for a local car rental company in Holland that operates at Amsterdam Airport and competes with players like Herz, Europcar, Avis, ... We started with SEO, SEA & Remarketing. With an overall conversion rate of 13% the results are pretty good, and our client is happy 🙂 Whieee End 2011 we started with an evaluation of the efforts we did last year(s) and to come to new insights to work on in 2012. The SEA & remarketing campaings have a (very) possitive ROI, and they give us lots of insights where we should focus on doing SEO. We identified longtail keywords with a high search volume but when monitoring these keywords in SEOmoz we see they are fluctuating. Some keywords gain ranking positions in google.nl but lose positions in google.com and vica versa. That's pretty frustrating, because we want to rank good in both 🙂 I was wondering what's the best practice for these longtails... Do we make specific landingspages that focus on these longtails, or do we focus on linkbuilding getting links with longtail anchor texts to the homepage of the website? An example: last week we rose 14 positions for a keyword in google.nl but for the same keyword we dropped 4 places in google.com (while .com is much more interesting for our client) Any suggestions are welcome!!

What is the best SEO site structure for multi country targeting?
Hi There, We are an online retailer with four (and soon to be five) distinct geographic target markets (we have physical operations in both the UK and New Zealand). We currently target these markets like this: United Kingdom (www.natureshop.co.uk) New Zealand (www.natureshop.co.nz) Australia (www.natureshop.com/au) - using a google web master tools geo targeted folder United States (www.natureshop.com) - using google web master tools geo targeted domain Germany (www.natureshop.de) - in german and yet to be launched as full site We have various issues we want to address. The key one is this: our www.natureshop.co.uk website was adversely affected by the panda update on April 12. We had some external seo firms work on this site for us and unfortunately the links they gained for us were very low quality, from sometimes spammy sites and also "keyword" packed with very littlle anchor text variation. Our other websites (the .co.nz and .com) moved up after the updates so I can only assume our external seo consultants were responsible for this. I have since managed to get them to remove around 70% of these links and we have bought all seo efforts back in house again. I have also worked to improve the quality of our content on this site and I have 404'ed the six worst affected pages (the ones that had far too many single phrase anchor text links coming into them). We have however not budged much in our rankings (we have made some small gains but not a lot). Our other weakness's are not the fastest page load times and some "thin" content. We are on the cusp (around 4 weeks away) of deploying a brand new platform using asp.net MVP with N2 and this looks like it will address our page load speed issues. We also have been working hard on our content building and I believe we will address that as well with this release. Sorry for the long build up, however I felt some background was needed to get to my questions. My questions are: Do you think we are best to proceed with trying to get our www.natureshop.co.uk website out of the panda trap or should we consider deploying a new version of the site on www.natureshop.com/uk/ (geo targeted to the UK)? If we are to do this should we do the same for New Zealand and Germany and redirect the existing domains to the new geo targeted folders? If we do this should we redirect the natureshop.co.uk pages to the new www.natureshop.com/uk/ pages or will this simply pass on the panda "penalty". Will this model build stronger authority on the .com domain that benefit all of the geo targeted sub folders or does it not work this way? Finally can we deploy the same pages and content on the different geo targeted sub folders (with some subtle regional variations of spelling and language) or will this result in a duplicate content penalty? Thank you very much in advance to all of you and I apologise for the length and complexity of the question. Kind Regards

Ranking well in Google US but not showing up in UK
Hi, We are trying to position a specific site for a big sport event that will be played at the end of May. We only care about Google UK. It had no relevant content until last week. The site is a almost a year old but we just started to get links for it (all from the UK). They worked so fast: we were in page 2 of SERPs in the UK within a few days. But suddenly the site has disappeared and we're not even in top 100 anymore. However, we are ranking extremely well in the US (first page for the keywords we wanted to rank for). The site is a .com and it's hosted in Wordpress.com (with a custom URL). I understand that that can be a problem, but we have already told Google that our business is in the UK through Webmaster Tools. I guess that with time and more UK links, Google would ultimately understand that our focus is the UK audience, but unfortunately we have no time and we can't wait due to the date of the sport event. What do you think that we can do to rank well in the UK and not in the US as fast as possible? Thanks!

Internationalization and SEO
Hi Everyone, This is my first post in this new Q & A section!! This interface looks great!! Now onto the question.... We have www.example.com in English that has 50,000+ URLs. We are in the process of building a new site example.de targeting German users. The German site (www.example.de) will be a mirror of the English site at launch as we want to give a full experience to people visiting the .de domain. However, not all pages will be localized as we can't support that. We are planning on localizing the core sets of pages (~500) and leaving the rest in English. Post launch, we will have additional milestones to localize the remaining pages until the entire site is localized (converted to German). Is this the correct way to go? Will this cause duplicate content issue?
