Are Link Exchange A Bad Idea

Hi, i am wondering if link exchanges are a bad idea. I have seen a company called link market where you join and exchange links with other companies and i am just wondering if this is now a bad idea.
The last thing i do not want to happen is for google to get angry if i done link exchanges

Do keep in mind that it is against Google's guidelines to buy links for the purposes of passing page rank.

Link exchange sounds great but according to me Google LOVES the inbound links not reciprocated links. Link Exchange is a good if the site linking to you has relevancy and provide DoFollow link . It would be even better to purchase advertising space from other sites in your niche that has high page rank and traffic so, you get traffic to your site without sending traffic away from your site.

Hi Diane, I can completely relate to the problem of stolen content. I'd come to accept that for one particular project content will be "stolen".
As Greg says, try contacting the webmaster and asked for proper credit and a link back. (Although, make sure you actually want a link back from the site first!) They may be more responsive to this than a request to remove the content...
Another tactic is to embed links to other articles on my site. Make sure the links are absolute links (full domain/path). It would make moving the content around later a pain to manage, but does mean that if the content is copied and pasted onto a different site, you'll be getting the inbound links. Make sure the links a relevant/useful. I like to reference my older content etc.

thank you for that advice everyone on contacting the author, i will start doing that. It is very annoying when you work on an article and then people take it or use part of it without you getting any glory for it.

Hi Diane, I'm sure that's very frustrating. It's certainly worth contacting the Webmasters to request that the content is removed or credited correctly, and you can also file a removal request with Google.

Diane, try contact the author and request that they reference the original source and threaten that if they don't, you will report them to Google.
You can file a DMCA request with Google to remove pages that are stealing your content.

thanks for that alice. The problem we have had in trying to gain one way links is, our content is being stolen and we are not getting the credit for it.
People also use sections of our content but never add a link to our site which is very frustrating.

I agree with Alice.
I ignore most link exchange requests, however i do find the odd website with great authority and rather than simply exchanging links on links pages, I try to to discuss and negotiate exchanging links via guest articles or editing an existing (relevant) piece of content with our link.
This doesn't happen often though, but its sometimes worth analyzing each request to find the gems. (Real webmasters promoting their REAL websites, and not some agency creating websites just for link exchange)

Hi Diane, link exchanges have the potential to do more harm than good, especially if:
- The link partner is low authority and/or low quality
- The link partner is in an unrelated niche
- The link partner has lots of other outbound links
One-way links give a lot more juice than link exchanges, so it's better in the long run to invest time and effort into producing quality content on your own site that might attract links. I would only ever consider a link exchange - on an individual basis rather than a scheme, which is against Webmaster guidelines) if the site was high quality, useful to my readers, in my niche but not a competitor, and had the potential to give me a lot of traffic through direct clicks.

Links from sites with iffy link profiles?
So the site http://www.cadenas.de/ appears to have good decent scores from the various Moz ranks, but when I check out the site in OSE there are a lot of really sketchy links that jump out, online pharmacy/drug type links. I should also add that the negative links are seemingly going to a weird blog deep in the site and only appear when I select all links to the root domain in OSE. Everything about the site appears very legitimate except for the link profile which has me nervous. Would you guys pursue a link from this site?

What is a natural link?
Hi everyone, I'm trying to better understand what is meant by a natural link and would appreciate any assistance. Doing some competitor link analysis I've noticed a web developer who has created a directory for all its customers. This is not a directory in the traditional sense of being of use to an end user, but to my untrained eyes, it looks like an internal directory used solely for the purpose of link building. For all I know this might be perfectly good practice in the industry, but as a beginner, I'm attempting to get an understanding of things. My question is, what precisely is meant by a natural link? If the above scenario is all ok, whereby there are businesses in the same field of work, but ultimately could be in any given location, on a directory, are they natural links? Do these kind of directories that don't service an end user, exist if the common feature between them is say location only, or an seo agency only? Appreciate I could be completely out of kilter on this, but it seems the benefit on SERPs is pretty significant for something that seems pretty "unnatural" to me? Any guidance would be appreciated...tom

Why Links from Top Level Domains doesn't Pass Link Equity?
Hello, I have a doubt about Equity-Passing links report of OpensiteExplorer.org According to Sam Weber http://moz.com/community/users/432678 links which pass value from one page to another including followed 301 and Meta refresh links are under Equity-Passing links. I am surprising after looking at the links report generated by opensiteexplorer.org. Most of the article and directory links which have low DA and PA are under Equity-Passing links. Whereas websites like EzineArticle or Articlebase which have good DA and PA are not found in either Equity-passing links or under only nofollow category. Please suggest me if the report of Opensiteexplorer is not good enough or the links from the site like Ezine Article doesn’t pass the link equity. Thanks.

Which Links to Disavow!
We just took over SEO for a new client who is being penalized for a bad link profile. They've asked Google to reconsider multiple times, and Google still claims that the links are bad. Because of this, and because I don't have direct access (logins, etc.) to what the former SEO did, I am considering using the disavow links tool. The most obvious links to disavow are a group of almost 1000 links that come from the same forum. However, when viewing the links on this forum they actually seem natural. People are reviewing the product (ipod cases), both negatively and positively. While this could have been an SEO tactic for link building, I don't want to disavow these links if they're not the problem, even though this domain is the source of almost all the low-quality links. Another site that has more than 200 links is Askives. Do any of you have experience with links from Askives, or removing these links? Thanks again!

What is the danger in offering giveaways in exchange for links?
In this Whiteboard Friday video, Rand says there is a danger in offering products for blogs to give away, simply requesting a link to your product or website in exchange for the giveaway. Could someone elaborate on what the danger is? Is this also the case with offering products for review?

Hi, I'm working on an account where we are optimizing SEO, SEA and Conversion. The business is a very local car rental company that competes with Hertz, Europcar, ... I already posted a question about it here http://www.seomoz.org/q/very-fluctuating-rankings The lack of time made it almost impossible for this business to start bloggin', but we're about to change that in 2012 and I already came up with some ideas for some articles, but still looking for that big fish that will get those good links. Link Churn - where have all my links gone?
I am sure most of you have asked yourself the question I'm asking right now.. Where have all my links gone? I am starting to get twitchy now. I would estimate we have lost around 60% of our links in the past 3 weeks. Does anyone have any comeback stories? Feel like I am back to the start again. I have made a number of changes on the site not least removing a reciprical link page.. that had over 200 links on it but from reading one of Rand's tweets is it true that linking out could be good again?
