404 with a Javascript Redirect to the index page...
-
I have a client that is wanting me to issue a 404 on her links that are no longer valid to a custom 404, pause for 10 seconds, then rediirect to the root page (or whatever other redirect logic she wants)...to me it seems trying to game googlebot this way is a "bad idea"
Can anyone confirm/deny or offer up a better suggestion?

Thanks CleverPhD. Exactly what I was thinking, just wanted to have someone else confirm. Appreciate it!

Don't think you are gaming Googlebot. You are showing it a 404 (that is good) so GB knows that the page is dead. You are showing a custom page to the user that should let them know the page is dead. I think the custom page should say something like "Oops, this page no longer exists, redirecting you to another more helpful page in 10 seconds (click here if you are not redirected). You are
I might give it 15-20 seconds to make sure the person has time to read it.
You are showing the same thing to Gbot and the user, so no cloaking issues, i.e. you are not trying to game GB.
You may want to reconsider a 301 redirect instead. You then get the redirect automatically for the user (no pause or clicking needed) and the 301 tells google where the new page is etc. The only caveat to that, if you are redirecting a bunch of pages to the home page (or some other index page) - your solution above is probably better as you don't want to have a many to one situation with the 301s. Google prefers more of a one to one on 301 redirects - otherwise they may tag your 301 as a soft 404.

Why do I have so many extra indexed pages?
Stats- Webmaster Tools Indexed Pages- 96,995 Site: Search- 97,800 Pages Sitemap Submitted- 18,832 Sitemap Indexed- 9,746 I went through the search results through page 28 and every item it showed was correct. How do I figure out where these extra 80,000 items are coming from? I tried crawling the site with screaming frog awhile back but it locked because of so many urls. The site is a Magento site so there are a million urls, but I checked and all of the canonicals are setup properly. Where should I start looking?

Can Googlebots read canonical tags on pages with javascript redirects?
Hi Moz! We have old locations pages that we can't redirect to the new ones because they have AJAX. To preserve pagerank, we are putting canonical tags on the old location pages. Will Googlebots still read these canonical tags if the pages have a javascript redirect? Thanks for reading!

Thousands of Web Pages Disappered from Google Index
The site is - http://shop.riversideexports.com We checked webmaster tools, nothing strange. Then we manually resubmitted using webmaster tools about a month ago. Now only seeing about 15 pages indexed. The rest of the sites on our network are heavily indexed and ranking really well. BUT the sites that are using a sub domain are not. Could this be a sub domain issue? If so, how? If not, what is causing this? Please advise. UPDATE: What we can also share is that the site was cleared twice in it's lifetime - all pages deleted and re-generated. The first two times we had full indexing - now this site hovers at 15 results in the index. We have many other sites in the network that have very similar attributes (such as redundant or empty meta) and none have behaved this way. The broader question is how to do we get the indexing back ?

What's the best way to redirect categories & paginated pages on a blog?
I'm currently re-doing my blog and have a few categories that I'm getting rid of for housecleaning purposes and crawl efficiency. Each of these categories has many pages (some have hundreds). The new blog will also not have new relevant categories to redirect them to (1 or 2 may work). So what is the best place to properly redirect these pages to? And how do I handle the paginated URLs? The only logical place I can think of would be to redirect them to the homepage of the blog, but since there are so many pages, I don't know if that's the best idea. Does anybody have any thoughts?

Any downsides of (permanent)redirecting 404 pages to more generic pages(category page)
Hi, We have a site which is somewhat like e-bay, they have several categories and advertisements posted by customers/ client. These advertisements disappear over time and turn into 404 pages. We have the option to redirect the user to the corresponding category page, but we're afraid of any negative impact of this change. Are there any downsides, and is this really the best option we have? Thanks in advance!

Getting 260,000 pages re-indexed?
Hey there guys, I was recently hired to do SEO for a big forum to move the site to a new domain and to get them back up to their ranks after this move. This all went quite well, except for the fact that we lost about 1/3rd of our traffic. Although I expected some traffic to drop, this is quite a lot and I'm wondering what it is. The big keywords are still pulling the same traffic but I feel that a lot of the small threads on the forums have been de-indexed. Now, with a site with 260,000 threads, do I just take my loss and focus on new keywords? Or is there something I can do to get all these threads re-indexed? Thanks!
