Question on term and what to target next? Nice dilemma to have!
-
Guys, I have an interesting dilemma that the team here is discussing and wanted your input here is the situation:
1. We had our home page rank for a key word 4-5 on google for the past 2 years.
2. About 5 weeks ago, the home page and a sub page began ranking on top 10 for the same term.
3. Today, the sub-page a "What is page" ranks 3-5 on google and the home page is dropped somewhere like 22 or so now
** I believe I should begin redirecting that anchor text to the sub page, and maybe even some or all of our internal anchor texts to this page...
Any recommendations? The home page is optimized to help get conversions, so we hate to 'give up' on that term, but any one run into this? What did you do?
Thanks Community SEOMOZ! for any input...

Hi Debbie,
Ideally each webpage would rank for 1-2 keyword targets. So if your homepage and sub page is ranking for the same term it could mean that the on-page optimization is geared towards the same terms (there is also the chance that Google will see both pages as similar and choose to rank only one - however from your description I don't think that's happening at the moment, so more of an fyi for now).
If you want to widen your reach in SERP's I'd first recommend targeting 1-2 specific keywords per page (so title tags, <h>headers, body copy, alt tags etc). Once you achieve rankings for these terms to further widen your reach, and without diluting the ranking you have gained I'd recommend adding more content rich pages to your website that target additional keywords.</h>
I'm unsure where or how your anchor text links sit and how they have been contributing to your rankings but if your homepage has dropped to number 22 wouldn't you want to try improve that ranking over the sub page?
Also, have you thought about doing link building (from external sites linking back to you)? It can help build your rank for target keywords.
Good luck,
Davinia

A dumb SEO question
Is it possible for a blog to rank only with fantastic content without any purchasing of backlinks... And how long does it take (on average) to get for example 500 active readers daily?

Still possible to target keywords?
If you're a professional SEO and a client wants to target certain keywords, other than on-page tweaks what else is there? Or am I right in presuming there's nothing you can do off-page any more?

Linking structure question
I generally go with UX over SEO when it comes to pretty much anything on my site. But, my question today is about linking (both internal and external). For internal links, I generally link in the same tab and for external links I generally open in a new tab. Recently I've gotten a few questions about external links opening in new tabs because some mobile devices can't open more than one tab at a time. So, here is my questions. What do you do and why? Is there any SEO value to having your links open in a new tab? Thanks.

Link building when your domain name is your head term.
Hello, I am working with a company that their domain name is the same as the head term. For example, if I was going for the head term coffee, and my site was coffee.com. This is specifically in the medical space, and i'm competing directly with Web MD and The Mayo Clinic, my advantage on the term is the EMD. We have a legitimate site with thousands of pages of relevant content, and I am starting a guest blogging campaign on relevant health sites. My real challenge is when I go for anchor text links should I ideally go for [head term] or [headterm.com] as the anchor text. Thanks in advance for your insights Zach

Would it make sense to add a no-follow to About, Sign In, Join Us, Privacy, Terms of Use etc?
Hi everyone, In order to increase link juice for relevant interlinks, wouldn't it make sense to attribute no-follow to the following interlinks: About Us, Sign In, Join Us, Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, Security, Contact Us, Home (assuming brand name / logo also links to homepage), and any page where there are 2 or more links directing to the same page. Thank you, Kristian

Quick Question About Exact Matched Keyword Domain
if you have lets say tools.examplexxxx.com in which "tools" + "example" makes a good keyword together i.e [example tools] (a good key word). Is it wise to put 300 quality backlinks with exact matched anchor text containing keyword**[example tools]** from niche related domains and not worrying getting hit by penguin.

Newbe question - What is the most effective link building strategy? (white hat)
Hello, I was just wondering what is the best way in terms of time-spent/results to create links to your site. I just saw a couple of videos on article syndication and article spinning and was wondering if this really works. Cheers Luca
