Automate process for naming page titles?
-
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the Moz community, but really loving it. I'm hoping some of you more experienced experts may be able to answer what is probably a pretty basic question.
I'm working for a non-profit client and I used the SEOMOZ tool to run a report on their site errors. I learned that the website has 5,432 duplicate page titles. They had their website redesigned last year before I started working with them and it appears that the developers didn't take into a account the need to provide unique page title names to each page.
While it may make sense to go in to add custom page titles to a handful of the pages for the site, the vast majority of the pages are allocated to products (e-commerce). Is there a script that the developers could add that would automatically add page unique page titles based on say, the title of the product?
Here are a few URLs to help you get a sense of what we're dealing with.

example level two page: http://www.creativityexplored.org/artists/douglas-sheran
example product page: http://www.creativityexplored.org/shop/original-art/prints/2776/profile-of-a-lady
Thank you so much for any advice you can offer.
Best,
Linda

Hey George. Thanks for cluing me into the Holiday Express reference. Very funny. And yes, you were able to help me out.
Thank you!

No problem, glad I could help.
The Holiday Inn Express reference is in regards to a series of commercials they ran some time ago lol...
Here's a Youtube video from one of them:

It basically means that I don't normally code in Ruby, but I think I can still help you out ;).

Hi George,
Thank you for your response. No, not too technical at all. I follow what you're saying. I'll pass this information on to my client and hopefully it's a relatively easy fix.
If anyone else has any additional information about implementing the solution specifically for Ruby code, I would appreciate it.
Thank you!
Linda
P.S. George, I'm curious, what is the connection between being a Ruby developer and staying at a Holiday Inn Express?

It looks like the product pages are dynamically created based on the product id in the URL (e.g. 2776 from your product page example). This product page could be updated to dynamically produce a different title based on this same information.
For example:
$product = getProductByProductID(2776);
$artist = getArtistByArtistID($product->artistID);
<title><?php echo "$product->name by $artist->name"; ?></title>
?>
Mind you, this is PHP code and you are using RESTful URLs so your site is likely written in Ruby - though I'm just guessing here.
For Ruby, this is essentially pseudo-code as I am not a Ruby developer by day (though I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night), but I believe you are looking to do something like this in your controller:
def product_page
@product = Product.find(params[:id])
@artist = Artist.find(@product.artistid)
@page_title = "<%[email protected]%> by <%[email protected]%>"
end
Then in your page template you can use:
<title><%= @page_title %></title>
Hope this helps and sorry if it is too technical/cryptic; but your developers should be able to do something like this pretty easily. It appears to already be underway to produce the rest of the page content. Now they just need to use it to populate the page title (and maybe the meta description - use part of the product description).

How to find orphan pages
Hi all, I've been checking these forums for an answer on how to find orphaned pages on my site and I can see a lot of people are saying that I should cross check the my XML sitemap against a Screaming Frog crawl of my site. However, the sitemap is created using Screaming Frog in the first place... (I'm sure this is the case for a lot of people too). Are there any other ways to get a full list of orphaned pages? I assume it would be a developer request but where can I ask them to look / extract? Thanks!

Missing Titles?
Hi All, Don't know if anyone can help me but Moz is showing lots of errors for my website for not having title tags for pages when they do? Also when a user refines they search results it is seeing every instance of this as a new page - we have canonical tags across the site to stop this happening yet it is still occurring each time - is there anything else we can do to resolve this problem? It's creating lots of errors for us. Thanks, Laura

Page for page 301 redirects from old server to new server
Hi guys:
Technical SEO | | cindyt-17038
I have a client who is moving their entire ecommerce site from one hosting platform (Yahoo Store) to another (BigCommerce) and from one domain to another. The old domain is registered with the Yahoo as of yesterday and we have redirected the old domain (at the domain level) to the new domain. However, we are having trouble getting the pages to redirect page for page. Currently they are all redirecting to the new domain home page. We did just move the old domain from GoDaddy to Yahoo yesterday thinking this would solve it however as of this morning the old pages are still redirecting to the home page of the new domain. To complete the 301 redirect picture, we uploaded the redirects (all relative links for both from and to) to BigCommerce. And while the domain was hosted at GoDaddy with a redirect to the new domain, they were working. We moved the domain to Yahoo because of email issues thinking it should still work. Is it possibly just a waiting game now as the change populates across the DNS? old url to test:

Issue: Duplicate Page Content > Wordpress Comments Page
Hello Moz Community, I've create a campaign in Moz and received hundreds of errors, regarding "Duplicate Page Content". After some review, I've found that 99% of the errors in the "Duplicate Page Content" report are occurring due to Wordpress creating a new comment page (with the original post detail), if a comment is made on a blog post. The post comment can be displayed on the original blog post, but also viewable on a second URL, created by Wordpress. http://www.Example.com/example-post http://www.Example.com/example-post/comment-page-1 Anyone else experience this issue in Wordpress or this same type of report in Moz? Thanks for your help!

What can be the cause of my inner pages ranking higher than my home page?
If you do a search for my own company name or products we sell the inner pages rank higher than the homepage and if you do a search for exact content from my home page my home page doesn't show in the results. My homepage shows when you do a site: search so not sure what is causing this.

High number of Duplicate Page titles and Content related to index.php
It appears that every page on our site (www.bridgewinners.com) also creates a version of itself with a suffix. This results in Seomoz indicating that there are thousands of duplicate titles and content. 1. Does this matter? If so, how much? 2. How do I eliminate this (we are using joomla)? Thanks.
