How do you generate followers on twitter?

Hi,
How do you generate followers on twitter?
I see a lot of people are saying follow others to gain more followers, use #tags and engage with other peoples tweets.
But with the last point, all the tweets I find under search are spam.
As an example, if you searched 'SEO' all you are going to get is lots of ' view this article' type tweets.
It's almost like there is more business/spam then actual real people.
Cheers

I have 17,000 subscribers. That brings lots of traffic into my website every day. Imagine the opportunity loss if they were not getting daily invitations to my site.

Your concern and question both are valid and I do not encourage to the process of "follow and unfollow" until you get your desired number of followers. It doesn't work to help you spread the word out.
I have tried many ways to gain actual followers, and here are the ones that you should use, too.
- I share as much useful information as possible with the current followers. If you get a retweet from a few of your followers, chances are high that you'll get a few relevant followers through this way.
- Find out influential people in the niche your working on and follow them closely about what they're posting, how they're communicating, and how they get more followers. This would help to know the more detailed ways to get real followers
- Do retweet of the tweets you see on your twitter home page (Of course, insightful ones). This might help to gain you a few followers who find the retweets helpful made by you.
- Follow the people who do retweet of your post and they will follow you back (If they aren't already)
- Do recommendations - You can recommend the most useful user that you have found in your followers list and can tweet their names using @. - write a short message why you're recommending them - this will prove that you're real human and not a software
- Participate in twitter chats and provide most useful information to the participants.
- Along with the informative posts, also make some tweets with inspirational quotes.
- Place your twitter username in the signatures of your emails, business cards etc.
- Do tweeting focusing on the timezone of your target audience. If you'll tweet when they're sleeping, you're probably not going to get any benefit/followers.
- Do great guest posts and mention your username in your bio. This is the real source of real followers.
I hope these would help you out. To get more insight, I would recommend to follow below link.

Thank you, makes sense.
Do you think feedburner is a must for blogs?

Great reply,
So follow real people.
So if I followed 100 real people but non followed back, would they still be exposed to my tweets in anyway?
I maybe be wrong but from what I thought was: you follow them, fingers crossed they check out your profile like what you are doing and follow you back. You then hope one of your tweets stands out to them in their feed and they retweet or engage in some way which generates exposure for your profile to their following?

"This piece of content" helps you get followers for your "next piece of content".
Give people an easy way to tweet about your content and follow you. When you get a new piece of content tweet about it.
We have addthis buttons at the top of every page and publish a feedburner feed with all of our new content and great stuff that we see elsewhere on the web.

Thanks for reply,
If someone did manage to produce a piece of content which was 'best of the web' how would they go about getting exposure for it on twitter though?
Would you need to rely on other marketing channels to do this?

Well, you're right. now people on twitter have started using fake account to spam, especially in SEO, real estate, make money, work from home industries. Facebook has 83 million fake accounts too.
@Mashable, an account with close to 3 million followers have about 12% fake followers
But still there is no way to get rid of it. As far generating more followers is concerned you have the answer. "follow others to gain more followers only real, influential people, use #tags and engage with other peoples tweets. real people"
Off beat. There is one tool which can keep you updated about your fake and inactive followers: http://fakers.statuspeople.com/ and http://www.tweepi.com can help you to get rid out of these fake followers.
Hope this helps

If you are doing things that people want to know about then you will attract followers like bugs to a Georgia porch light.... and if you are not doing anything that people want to know about then you will have to pay to get phoney accounts following you.
Don't worry about followers and do something of note.

I would start by saying do you have a strong email list of customers - if so create a nice eye catching email asking them to follow you. You are more likely to be successful if you give them an incentive/ good reason to follow you.
As simple as following other people and thanking those that follow you with a tweet will lead to more follows, although this is a slow method.
Don't write off hashtags just take time to research the most effective one in relation to your field - this does include SEO as a niche.
Use the newly integrated followerwonk to identify relevant people and authorities to follow and mark out as those best to engage with. Building you relationship on twitter with these authorities will lead to more followers through the exposure of your interaction with them on their feed to their social following.
One final point - make sure your site has twitter social integration, making it easy for content to be tweeted and also making it easy to follow you.

Twitter Analytics: Follower Count & Reporting Inconsistencies
Our number of followers on Twitter has suddenly dropped (yet not dropped) in a really weird way. Twitter Analytics shows follower counts in two places: Monthly increases in followers, and then also in the Audience Insights tab, where you can see three months of follower counts mapped in a chart. Month-to-month, the total number of followers continues to rise. What’s inconsistent, however, is the total number of aggregate followers shown in the cart. Twitter just dropped our to total count of followers by about 600. But it’s not like we just suddenly lost 600 followers last month (in fact we gained far more than that), but rather that Twitter seems to have adjusted the aggregate numbers across the board retroactively for all months. So while month-to-month continues to show gains, overall, we still went down. The only way we would have even noticed this, by the way, is because we have a record of the OLD total follower count that Twitter had previously displayed as recently as last month. So confusing. We’re trying to figure out what happened, and the only thing that seems to make sense is that Twitter may have done a huge spam account purge, and instead of making it look like we suddenly lost a lot of followers, they just updated the aggregate total # of followers across all time……? [For the record, we do not buy followers, but we don’t always do the best job at blocking spam followers when the do follow us either.] Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. 🙂

How to implement products in facebook to generate maximum traffic to site and facebook profile page?
Lets take the example of a hotel reservation site offering 500 hotels. Any suggestions on how to present the 500 hotels within their facebook page so that they generate maximum traffic and interaction? No intention to offer checkout on facebook. E.g. adding image of each hotel in the photo album with link to website and some information about hotel. Any ideas? Any good posts or articles on the topic?

Twitter and SEO
Hello Mozzers, I am trying to determine the effectiveness of using twitter as an SEO tactic. A site in my niche (healthcare job boards) is ranking very well for a handful of head terms. Their backlink profile is okay, but not amazing. But one thing that stands out to me is their approach to twitter, http://www.physemp.com/socialTwitter.html. It looks like they send an automated feed of their jobs to these specific twitter handles. Each of the handles has over 2,000 followers (some are legit some are bots). The site ranks for some highly competitive head terms (see attached). Can any of their ranking success be attributed to these various twitter handles? Is Google seeing these twitter feeds and associating high follower count and high tweet frequency with the URL attached to each account? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Thanks in advanced! lMbkS

Is Twitter Stealing Our Link Juice?
Something recently clicked in my mind when looking at the way our web developers were linking to our twitter accounts:. They were linking like this: A) https://twitter.com/#!/aczarto Instead of like this: B) https://twitter.com/aczarto
Social Media | | Czarto
(Due to a copy/paste from the address bar). Technically (A) is a link to the homepage of twitter and NOT to the individual twitter account as in **(B) **(The hash tag isn't technically part of the url, and traditionally Google has ignored everything after the hashtag) For me, this raises a few thoughts/comments: Make sure your web team is linking in (B) format and not just copy pasting the url when they visit your company's twitter page. I don't think twitter is doing this on purpose - but if they are - it is EVIL GENIUS! They are stealing lots of links heading into a user's account page and instead sending that link juice to their home page. Does Google-bot follow hash tags? ie: When Google hits the link (A), does it crawl twitter.com/ or does it crawl twitter.com/#!/aczarto? Is this a tactic that can be leveraged by others to try and direct links to other pages? ie: MyWebStore.com/money-page/#show-link-bait that generates shares that actually produce links to the site's money page instead of the intended link-bait. Could this be possibly considered cloaking? Looking forward to people's thoughts...3 -

Multiple twitter accounts for Different countries...
Ok, so we currently operate in the UK, Australia, Ireland, Spain and France. Currently we have a different twitter accounts for each Country. This can be difficult to manage as we are going it all from the UK. I can understand that having separate accounts for foreign language countries is perhaps suitable (we have foreign staff tweeting in their native tongue), but my question is this: Is it worth just tweeting all English speaking activity from one account. I mean at the end of the day we are one company, and also our activity in other countries won't effect our followers, in fact wouldn't it just make them realise we are a global brand? What are the advantages and disadvantages of gradually deleting the other accounts and tweeting all English stuff from the one account? Cheers,

Does it make sense to have one facebook/twitter account for multiple websites?
If you have several different websites with related themes, does it make sense to just have a facebook or twitter page for the company to make managing the account more manageable?
