Is it possible to be penalized as duplicate content for one keyword but not another?
-
I help develop an online shopping cart and after a request from management about some products not showing up in the SERP's I was able to pinpoint it down to mostly a duplicate content issue. It's a no brainer as some times new products are inserted in with copied text from the manufacturers website.
I recently though stumbled across a odd problem. When we partially re-wrote the content to seem unique enough it seemed to remedy the issue for some keywords and not others.
A) If you search the company name our category listing shows as #1 ahead of the manufacturers website. We always did rank for this term.
B) If you search the product name our product page is listed #3 behind two other listings which belong to the manufacturer.
C) If you search the keywords together as "company product" we are still being filtered out as duplicate content. When I allow the filtered results to show we are ranking #4
It's been a full month since the changes were indexed.
Before I rewrite the content even further I thought I would ask to see if any one has any insight as to what could be happening.

I think I'll try eliminating a few direct match phrases on the page. Have a few more references to the company on it's own and the product on it's own.
If that fails I'll re-write the content further. If it ends up being a duplicate content issue I'll be amazed, I just can't see passing for some keywords and failing for others because of duplicate content.

I believe its a keyword/phrase based filter. Meaning, the site probably got too many exact anchor links and/or used too much of the same keyword or phrase in the title, description & main body.
Also, like you mentioned, it could be a duplicate content issue - try looking at the re-written content: where you use the keyword/phrase that you are targeting. Perhaps, it wasn't rewritten effectively to be pass Copyscape/ considered 'original'?

Do mobile and desktop sites that pull content from the same source count as duplicate content?
We are about to launch a mobile site that pulls content from the same CMS, including metadata. They both have different top-level domains, however (www.abcd.com and www.m.abcd.com). How will this affect us in terms of search engine ranking?

Https Duplicate Content
My previous host was using shared SSL, and my site was also working with https which I didn’t notice previously. Now I am moved to a new server, where I don’t have any SSL and my websites are not working with https version. Problem is that I have found Google have indexed one of my blog http://www.codefear.com with https version too. My blog traffic is continuously dropping I think due to these duplicate content. Now there are two results one with http version and another with https version. I searched over the internet and found 3 possible solutions. 1 No-Index https version

Moving wordpress from one domain to another and phpmyadmin
Hi all, I have moved a site made in wordpress from a domain (domain1.com) to a different one (domain2.com). I have created a new db and I have been forced to give to it a different name, because in my cpanel mysqldatabases you can create db using only a prefixed db name structure (such as namehosting_(empty field)). So from database nama namehosting1_wp, I have forced to create namehosting1_wp, changing parameters in wp_config.php I have also forced to change db user for the same reason. I have gone to phpmyadmin to import the sql database previously exported from domain2.com. It gives to me this message: #1044 - Access denied for user 'nameuser'@'localhost' to database 'information_schema'. It seems that I have not right privileges. Or should I follow some other procedures? Thanks and ciao Bob

Duplicate content issues caused by our CMS
Hello fellow mozzers, Our in-house CMS - which is usually good for SEO purposes as it allows all the control over directories, filenames, browser titles etc that prevent unwieldy / meaningless URLs and generic title tags - seems to have got itself into a bit of a tiz when it comes to one of our clients. We have tried solving the problem to no avail, so I thought I'd throw it open and see if anyone has a soultion, or whether it's just a fault in our CMS. Basically, the SEs are indexing two identical pages, one ending with a / and the other ending /index.php, for one of our sites (www.signature-care-homes.co.uk). We have gone through the site and made sure the links all point to just one of these, and have done the same for off-site links, but there is still the duplicate content issue of both versions getting indexed. We also set up an htaccess file to redirect to the chosen version, but to no avail, and we're not sure canonical will work for this issue as / pages should redirect to /index.php anyway - and that's we can't work out. We have set the access file to point to index.php, and that should be what should be happening anyway, but it isn't. Is there an alternative way of telling the SE's to only look at one of these two versions? Also, we are currently rewriting the content and changing the structure - will this change the situation we find ourselves in?
