5th failed Google reconsideration attempt, can you help? (are scraper/related news sites the issue?)
-
(sorry for the long question - I thought it would be useful to give the background!)
I am really struggling a Google's reconsideration request for my site, and although we thought we had removed almost all the 'bad' backlinks I am still getting no-where...
We are really wanting to focus on building our brand, and establishing our site as an authority but this penalty is really holding us back.
The latest response from Google:
There are still many inorganic links pointing to your site. At this point, we believe we’ve evaluated these links appropriately, and no further action from us is required. In order for your site to have a successful reconsideration request, we will need to see a substantial, good-faith effort to remove the links, and this effort should result in a significant decrease in the number of bad links that we see. We do not recommend that you submit another reconsideration request until you have been able to make a good amount of progress. Once you’ve been able to get the links removed, please reply to this email with the details of your clean-up effort.
My Website: http://bit.ly/KXg8y1
History:
- This is a new domain - approx 6 months old
- Old domain received a Google links warning
- We decided to start a new website, launch a new brand and start from the beginning
- We 301 re-directed the old domain so we didnt lose customers
- We then got a Google links warning for the new site
- We assumed this was related to links from the old site and so removed the 301 redirect on the 20th August
- Our old sites links still show in Google webmaster tools
Reconsideration History
-
1st re-consideration request: Explained the 301 redirect had been removed, assured we would now be focussing on high quality content/brand building and after 2 weeks received a standard message to say that still had inorganic links
-
2nd Request: Went through the new sites links (using open site explorer, AHREFs, SEO Majestic and GWM) and removed those we identified as low quality (mostly directories built by an SEO company we had started working with). We complied a spreadsheet with all the links in it (including 301 redirect links) and explained which had been removed, webmaster contact details etc. We also uploaded our template email and screenshots showing contact with webmasters.
-
3rd, 4th and 5th Request: We went through the new site links and were able to remove a few more links which were thin or could be seen as inorganic, and the end result is that apart from 6 links we have removed all those we have identified as inorganic.
Links
- The old site had some pretty poor links
- We have done no paid linking, no blog networks, no spammy web 2.0 sites on this site.
- We've added good quality content to our blog, focussed on social media, published an infographic, and are committed to long-term brand building
- The links mostly come from guest blog posting.
- An SEO company (who told us they were 100% content based) built some directory links - but 99% of these have been removed
- There are some links from
- Scraper/related news sites (ones that have related blog posts or scrape images etc)
- Press releases which were picked up and re-published (some of these include anchor text)
My Question/s:
- Do you think Google is still seeing the links from the previous 301 redirect in Google webmasters and including these still?
- Are these scraper/related post sites causing the issue? (organic links - but some dubious sites)
- Are sites re-publishing our press releases causing the issue? (organic links - but includes some anchor text
I really appreciate your time on this one, I have tried really hard to identify and remove links, but am now struggling!
Many Thanks
-
Thank you very much for both of your responses, its good to know Antonio that I can recover.
Marie you comments have made me go back my link profile and look again, I thought the press releases would be seen as organic, but now i can see the anchor text looks that manipulation of page rank.
Wish me luck as I remove links and prepare for take 6!

Good job, Antonio on getting your penalty lifted from your site!
Tom, I have found that most failed reconsideration requests happen for one of two reasons:
1. Webmasters do not take a big enough hatchet to their links. Those press releases with anchor text are one example...they need to go.
2. Not being thorough enough on your request.
When I do a reconsideration request I attach a copy of every single email sent and received (both to email addresses on the site and also whois emails) for sites for which I couldn't get the link removed. I also attach a screenshot of every contact form I submitted.

I have got my website back from reconsideration. I suggest to only focus on the links that shows up in your Google Webmaster Account. Also, I suggest creating two Google Docs and coping all of your email correspondance and pasting them into one google doc. Save it and share it. Copy the url of that Google doc.
Next, create a Google excel doc. Copy all the url backlinks that you have requested to be removed that corresponds with your emails and paste them in the excel doc. You can easily download these links through Google Webmaster Tool which you may already know.
Lastly, keep your consideration short. Just state that you have completed working on removing bad backlinks and below are links to two docs showing my effort.
Paste your two Google docs below.
It is important to make sure that your backlinks in your Google Webmaster tools have shown some sort of decrease from when you were penalized. If the number of backlinks haven't gone down any then the work above is useless.
Also, when you email the webmasters of the bad backlinks, make sure you attach a file showing them the links that you need removed. This makes it easier for the webmaster to go through and remove them. They will also be more app to remove your backlinks if they have a list to go off of.
Email me if you any questions.
Hope this helps.
Tony

Links from spam sites
Hi! Thank you in advance for your help. Few months ago we suffered a content spam attack. Now, We have discovered that we have imbound links pointing the spam content from external spam and untrusted sites. Could be this affect our ranking? In this case... How can we notify to Google that we refuse these imbound links? Cheers, Luis

Content Strategy - High Value on Lots of Sites vs. High Value on One Site
Good afternoon Mozzers. I have a discussion based question and I'd be interested to know your thoughts. I currently implement a content strategy where we create a series of high value How-to written articles, relevant to our audience and then work at getting them placed on multiple high value websites. I have just been offered an opportunity with a PR6 domain to create a similar series of content but place it all on their site with links back to ours through a dedicated section. So my question is would I gain more value from small amounts of great content in lots of places vs. a lot of great content in on place? Effectively 1 link from 20 sites vs. 20 links from 1 site.

Help me strategize!
Hoping for some guidance here. I am trying to place anywhere on page 1 in google organic search for my targeted term "Philadelphia wedding photographers." My blog posts rank very well for their own keywords/long-tails, but I'm having trouble ranking my homepage for my main aforementioned keyword. The frustrating part is that my SEOmoz domain/page authority should easily place me near the top of page 1, but instead I'm at the top of page 3 (down from page 2 last week). Bartlett Pair Photography Potential issues that I am aware of: #1 backlink anchor text is non-branded (branded is 2nd highest..I am working to fix this over time) Homepage itself is bare content due to nature of photography niche (though, my title tag and header focus on keyword and brand). I'm sure everyone will recommend that I increase homepage content, but virtually all competitors have a similar lack of homepage content so I don't understand how I rank so low given my page/domain authority. I've received 1 unnatural link notice from Google on March 22, 2012, but this is the only time, and really had no visible impact on my traffic. I have no local listing. I will remedy this in about 2 months when I have a physical location. Regardless, organic (non-local) listings are important to me because my physical location is 30 minutes outside city center. Is there a specific way that my website and Facebook page need to be connected in order to receive social graph juice? Currently, my website has some social plugins to like/share/tweet my content...and my FB page has a link to my website in the About section. (They also both use the same brand name). Most of my social activity (likes/shares) is directly on my Facebook fan page, and not on my website. Thank you in advance for any advice you may have! I'm hoping that someone is able to point out a strategy other than 1) more (branded) backlinks and 2) more homepage content!

Google ranking penalty
Do you think that our websites involvement with LinkMonster.com link building program is the cause of our penalty by google in our ranking ?

Linking strategy between my own sites
Hi, I have one main site, let's call it food.com I also have 10 smaller sites, let's call them mexicanfood.com, indianfood.com, italianfood.com etc food.com is on its own separate dedicated server the 10 smaller sites are all on a shared IP in hostgator I don't want Google to think that I have created the 10 sites for only purpose of creating links to each other. So, would you recommend that all those 10 sites link to each other? or should there be no interlinking within those 10 same IP domains? What about linking from those 10 sites to my main site? How should I structure my own backlinks not to get penalized by Google ?

Why Google is not getting many of the links to my site?
Hello, I have a website for cosmetics, selling and a lot of information (http://www.vipcosmetica.com). For about half a year I've been working also in seo for several google keywords. My question is about the external links to my site. Using different tools, including those of SEOMoz, I see just a few links to my site, however there are plenty, because I've been putting them myself, in public directories, related blogs, industry websites and so on. Alexa shows 5 links only, OpenSiteExplorer shows 4, and Market Samurai 9. I thinks theres should be like 50-60 links, minimum, in pages with good google PR (Youtube, Vimeo, Vulka, Hotfrog, Digg, Flickr, etc.). In Alexa, recently two more links appeared, from two blogs that have copied some content from my site (priveta policy) without changing the original links that point to other pages on my site, and those are the links that Alexa shows now. What could be the reason the rest of the links do not appear at all? Thank you very much

Discrepancy in Site Metrics
I site I've been working on has been up since early January. The domain was not new, but no site or links existed prior. Link building finished 2 months ago. There are about 80 fairly high quality links mostly from unique domains, and the site has been doing well with search engines for some time. OSE lists only 24 of these domains (for all pages on the root domain). OSE stats hardly changed in the last update so here's my question: when will OSE data reflect the current reality?
