How do websites get links here...
-
Does anyone know how people get into the "Top Links on This Topic" section of the Huffington Post?
I can see that the "Around the Web" section is curated by someone, in this case "Jeff Muskus" but there is no indication how the Top Links on This Topic appear on a page.
The only thing I noticed is that the original article appearing in HP is almost a year older than any of the referenced links.

It seems hit and miss on each article. Most flagged as "social reading" have some part of the widget, while others don't. Hmmmmm!
Did a little searching around:

I think this module comes from Twitter anywhere api.

Can you share a link to the one with the klout scores.
Is there a date filter as well? Are you seeing examples where the links in the twitter box point to content newer than than the story, or does it all predate it?

I noticed on a different article the same widget was displaying Klout scores for various twitter users. I have a sneaking suspicion that the links come from high Klout score individuals who tweet about the issue. I'm going to test this out!

The fact that they are wrapped within the Twitter branding strongly suggests that they are coming from Twitter rather than being under editorial control from huffpost.
The naming of those elements in the HTML would seem to back that up as well: id="twt-top-links-page-1" and id="twitter_top_links"
It's not a widget style I have seen anywhere else, so presumably it uses the twitter API to do searches. What logic they use to rank those is anyones guess. Could be as simple as pulling the most tweeted URLs from posts matching the shown search string... could be something far more complicated.
Very interesting though... might be worth some experimentation comparing API results with the results on some of the more obscure articles.

Personally I would email/call the editor about it. Network with them on Twitter and Linked In as well.

Are the following considered bad links for Link Building.
I've been doing a lot of research lately on link building & I've read a lot about having a diverse amount of links. Social links, Blog links, comment links, footer links, No follow links, Directory links as well as links with Anchor text URL match, brand match, partial brand match, non-descriptive, and with keywords. But there is a lot of talk of removing those links that look like a site that's built just for link building purposes.... but Directories are basically built for link building are they not? I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they feel links from the following directories would be bad links. Ideas for structuring contest to get links?
Hi Mozzers, So I'm getting all set to run a contest. The prizes are great and I've developed a good way to promote it via paid and natural venues. I'm just not sure how to structure the actual contest so the end result is more links than mentions. One idea I had was to make this a story telling contest where the contestant blogs about a good/bad experience within the niche industry and adds a link back to us to enter. Does this seem like to much effort for the user? Prices are worth about $250 each, and I plan to have 3 winners. Any ideas on how to better gear this towards link building is appreciated. Thanks!

Page links vs. domain links
Hello all, I am trying to find out how Google weighs page inbound links vs. domain inbound links. I have a domain with about 100,000 inbound links and am adding a new page to my domain which at this time has 0 links. I will be trying to outrank a competitors page that has 6,000 inbound links to the competitors page, but only has 26,000 inbound links to my competitors domain . Is there a formula or a way to know how Google values a page link vs. a domain link?
