Hit Hard By Panda 20, Road To Recovery?
-
It's been 4+ years and we haven't been hit or affected by any update. But, on September 27th we were hit by Panda 20.
Does anyone have any idea where to start to recover? Any resources help at this point. Should i be focusing on re-writing my OLD web content? Should i focus on building more links?
Like i said, anything helps at this point. thanks,
Paul

Don't mean to distract from Paul's issues, but Marie I have to take issue with your Panda analysis. One of my websites was also hit hard by Panda over 27-29 September. It is NOT an EMD site, by the most common interpretations, so it can only be Panda.
The site has 130 pages of mostly very well-written content, tight on topic, targeting long-tail search phrases. So it does not fall into the "very little crawlable text" category.
The site has no duplicated content. I have run Copyscape across every page of the site and nothing more than about 3-4% duplication. It may be that the internal tag linking structure, or pointer domains, give Google an impression of duplicate content, but SEOMoz says my canonical structures are good.
There are virtually no spelling or grammar mistakes on the site, unless Google cannot handle international spelling. I am a writer by profession.
There are very few ads on the site at all. Certainly not to the level Google describes in its Panda rules.
So why was my site hit by Panda? And what can I do to recover? I am currently working through every single SEOMoz Pro report and checking the site page by page using the analysis tools, but what I am coming up with is really marginal.
The only things I can imagine could have been of concern to Google were (1) I had some scraped affiliate content on the site - hotels by location; (2) I had a decommissioned URL with a lot of indexed posts pointed at my domain; and (3) I had a lot of 404 errors due to a major change in permalink structure. (1) and (2) were corrected weeks before Panda and (3) has also been corrected.
I understand there has already been a Panda refresh since September and it made no difference at all. I had no messages from Google and they have confirmed (through a reconsideration request) that no manual penalty has been applied. All URLs are still indexed on Google, but appear around pages 45-50 of the results. I still get a trickle of Google search traffic, but overall it's down 85-90%.
URL is traveltipsthailand DOT com if anyone cars to check it out and give me their thoughts. Maybe Paul can also learn from what I am doing.

So - any luck?

I can't tell you if it's Panda 20 or the EMD update. The domains that dropped aren't EMD's but they are linked to by a few prominent ones which seem to have dropped in the SERPS... hmmm..

It's important to know that Panda is completely about on page issues and not your backlink profile.
The key issue is to look for pages on your site that have the following:
-Very little crawlable text
-Content that is duplicated either on your own site or across the web.
-A large amount of spelling or grammar mistakes
-A distracting number of ads.
Then, on those pages you need to either add substantial content that is helpful to the reader, change content so it is not duplicated, noindex the page (either via a noindex tag or through robots.txt), or get rid of the page altogether.
You can read more detail abou this here.
For some sites this can be difficult...for example, affiliate sites with very little unique content. I have seen others though that can recover with some hard work.
We tend to get a Panda refresh about every 3-6 weeks, so if you make the changes and Google is satisfied that you are now providing quality, unique content to readers then you can recover your rankings completely with the next refresh.

Weird - I will check my settings. I was able to send you a PM with my email though. You should have it
-
I tried to send a PM by looks like you have them disabled Maybe you can send me one with your email?
-
Cool - had to ask, no offence. I will watch for the PM
-
No email from google because i have not engaged in any black-hat link building. I'll send you a PM.
-
What is your URL? Did you get an email from Google stating that there was a penalty or anything like that?

Very odd behavior. Google is changing “%20” to “+” in my URLS
I just realized many of the links on my site are BROKEN when entered from a Google SERP. This didn’t used to be this way. I have no idea what’s going but I’m worried. It involves a folder of our site that has a space in it. Google is even displaying the proper “%20” in the SERP but when I click the link it replaces that “%20” with a + which breaks the link!! You can see this in action by typing in “brown jordan sheffield furniture” without quotes into Google. You’ll see our site come up first and displaying this link sheffieldfurniture.com/Other%20Furniture/BrownJordan.html but when you click it the link is broken! This is happening on many of our pages! Anyone know what in the world is going on?

Penguin 2.0 Update - Just Hit - Google Messes up again, can anyone on SEOMOZ please tell me why or how some of these websites are ranking?
I am getting a bit tired now writing all of this so please excuse grammar and spelling mistakes, I wanted to post this up quickly tonight so I could possibly get some feedback by morning. So I feel I figured out some of the new update that just hit and I am sure the update will continue to keep coming and rankings will most likely change for a while, but I do have a few questions in the mean time if they stay. Please look below, why would some of those sites be ranking? Some sites utilize no onpage SEO, some no backlinks, one of the sites is a single page site and every page is a broken link even the contact us page and it's rank 1..... I am not 100% sure that Google got this one right. I see many instances below where other sites are much higher quality and have more authority. It's as if Google took terrible sites and said here is a site for you, now deal with it and I hope it works out at the top. I do see several sites that belong on the first page, but I see others that are very questionable. This is how the following is written below. Before the url is the anchor text density % for the site. This indicates the percentage of the amount of times the anchor text was backlined versus other anchor texts they used. Issues with the sites. Most of these sites don't utilize onpage SEO and it's clearly not a factor for onpage density purposes, there is a site with 37% keyword density on it. Some sites even have broken links. Please note: I already know that there is a lot of data that is analyzed to determine rankings more than this, but PA/DA is suppose to be a major factor according to everyone that believes in SEOMOZ.org. So I am taking in account for many of those factors being calculated due to this. These are just some random keywords I picked, because I know you need to analyze other SEO firms after and update to figure out what lasted and what didn't. All of my sites lasted due to ethical tactics, but I had some rankings move down and others go up, very odd. The onpage SEO is sloppy and the writing looks forced. Why is this even ranking? The site also looks low quality. The density is higher than SEOMOZ even and it has less words. In this case DA + words carried this site up, not the anchor ratio being low. 6.17% http://www.cheapseo-services.com cheap seo Page Authority DA 28 -- PA 38 276 Words No onpage, 35 duplicate pages, free template, etc.. etc.. 10% www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-do-seo-cheap DA 94 --- PA 56 only 5 anchor texts used on this page. 8651 Words I am willing to bet if you diversified this with about 5 more anchor texts this could be number 1 easy. My site was hit by the Penguin Update, Now What?
My site is very young, having only been up for about a month and a half. Despite being nascent we were seeing a ton of organic traffic. Enter Google Penguin update.... Traffic is down 40% or so over the past week. So, assuming the damage has been done, the question is, what do we do next to start moving back towards where we were? If we're doing everything everything right do we just chalk it up to the fact that our site is very new and stay the course on original content and link building? I know you can submit your site for reconsideration which is something that we are going to do this week, but I wonder what else we can do to start edging back to where we were pre-penguin update. Maybe this would be a good Whiteboard Friday topic.

Huge Hit and Bouncing Rankings Since Panda 3.3 Update?
Has anyone else seen rankings bouncing all over the place since the end of Feb? A client's site is for the term hcg which I know is controversial but we were in 3rd or 4th for the past couple of months until this update. Now for the term "hcg" the rankings are bouncing from the twenties to over 100 multiple times a day. I check them throughout the day with non personalized search, rank checker, etc to just try and keep updated. I have never seen rankings bounce around so much after an update and am wondering if this update is somehow effecting these more controversial search terms. Since The end of Feb our traffic has almost dropped in half due to the drop in just the "hcg" term ranking We have been cleaning up the site, updating lower quality content, blogging frequently and trying to build better links for the past couple months of working on the site. The problem is there have been a few other previous SEO companies that worked on the site and I don't know how much black hat tactics were used. Any insight or suggestions on this would be appreciated, we are all scrambling to try and recover from this.

Schedule for Panda / Farmer Update rollout for non English sites?
Hey Mozzers, I just read about the global rollout of googles Panda/Farmer Update for English queries, e.g. at searchengineland. Has anyone read something about when google is planning to roll out the update for non-English speaking countries, i.e. queries in other languages? I googled a bit but couldn't find anything, not even speculations. Cheers, Frank
