Do Seomozers recommend sitemaps.xml or not. I'm thoroughly confused now. The more I read, the more conflicted I get

I realize I'm probably opening a can of worms, but here we go. Do you or do you not add a sitemap.xml to a clients site?
-
Go with a sitemap. Hint it via robots.txt and use a Gzipped SitemapIndex (not a plain sitemap). Make sure that your index files do not contain more than 50,000 URLs.
Verify that whatever you submit in the sitemap-index files is not blocked by robots.txt or onpage noindex-tags.

Hi Catherine
It's still considered good practice to include a sitemap.xml though not always essential.
It's debatable as to whether or not it actually brings benefit to do so (likely does in some cases such as for dynamic sites and new sites) though as Webmaster Tools still has the facility to receive sitemap.xml files through a submission, is usually good to spend a little time creating one. One more tick in the box for on-site SEO.
A good read on this topic can found at http://www.brilliantthinking.net/2012/05/22/benefits-of-a-google-xml-sitemap/
Hope that helps,
Simon

Yep, in most cases, as long as they are done well. There was a lady on here a week or so ago that was submitting a site map with nearly 250,000 duplicate URLs and in that instance, I would probably say drop it if you can't fix it.
But, in ordinary cases, if your sitemap is well aligned with the pages on your site and if you have duplicate URLs and canonical urls and it only features the correct canonical it can certainly increase indexation and subsequently unique URLs that are sending traffic.
We have also seem some great indexation and results from video and multi page sitemaps.
Another plus point is if you do have problems with pages you submit, you will get some feedback in webmaster tools when the pages show as 'not selected' which again can be a useful bit of diagnostic information.
So, in most cases, sitemaps get a thumbs up from me.

Sitemap error in Webmaster tools - 409 error (conflict)
Hey guys, I'm getting this weird error when I submit my sitemap to Google. It says I'm getting a 409 error in my post-sitemap.xml file (https://cleargear.com/post-sitemap.xml). But when I check it, it looks totally fine. I am using YoastSEO to generate the sitemap.xml file. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a big deal? If so, Does anyone know how to fix? Thanks EwTswL4

Search Console rejecting XML sitemap files as HTML files, despite them being XML
Hi Moz folks, We have launched an international site that uses subdirectories for regions and have had trouble getting pages outside of USA and Canada indexed. Google Search Console accounts have finally been verified, so we can submit the correct regional sitemap to the relevant search console account. However, when submitting non-USA and CA sitemap files (e.g. AU, NZ, UK), we are receiving a submission error that states, "Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page," despite them being .xml files, e.g. http://www.t2tea.com/en/au/sitemap1_en_AU.xml. Queries on this suggest it's a W3 Cache plugin problem, but we aren't using Wordpress; the site is running on Demandware. Can anyone guide us on why Google Search Console is rejecting these sitemap files? Page indexation is a real issue. Many thanks in advance!

Sitemap issue? 404's & 500's are regenerating?
I am using the WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast to generate a sitemap on http://www.atozqualityfencing.com. Last month, I had an associate create redirects for over 200 404 errors. She did this via the .htaccess file. Today, there are the same amount of 404s along with a number of 503 errors. This new Wordpress website was constructed on a subdirectory and made live by simply entering some code into the .htaccess file in order to direct browsers to the content we wanted live. In other words, the content actually resides in a subdirectory titled "newsite" but is shown live on the main url. Can you tell me why we are having these 404 & 503 errors? I have no idea where to begin looking.

Consistent top 10 in G image search - but a different 'stolen' version every time!
I have a photo that was uploaded back in 2005. It is an aerial shot and has received a fair bit of traffic over the years. I'm pretty sure it was ranked #1 in Google Images for the town name for a while. Now, however, it never ranks. Well actually it does. But every single time it is a version on a different website that is being used without permission.

And I'm not talking about one website. Every time I fill out a DMCA and have the image removed only to see a completely different website featuring in the top 10. This has happened 5 times so far and I'm just about to fill out another DMCA request. What is going on? Surely Google in its infinite wisdom is smart enough to check the timestamp or date cues on page to figure out which is the original. These other sites are often complete unknowns compared to my site which is a 12yr old authority site on the subject.

Best XML Sitemap Generator for Mac?
Hi all, Recently moved from PC to Mac when starting a new job. One of the things I'm missing from my PC is G Site Crawler, and I haven't yet found a decent equivalent for the Mac. Can anybody recommend something as good as G Site Crawler for the Mac? I.e. I need the flexibility to exclude by URL parameter etc etc. Cheers everyone, Mark
