Advanced Segment on Google Analytics
-
Hello there,
hope everyone is allright and rockin' the SEO world
Was wondering if anyone could give a tip on how to configure an 'Advanced Segment' on Google Analytics.
Basically I need to isolate traffic for 4 specific subfolders. E.g.
Please note that the website has more pages under the specific section. E.g
but I only need to isolate the 4 directories (and their own sub-folders) mentioned above.
Any idea how I could do this?
Thanks a lot
Joe

BTW: We tried to do segmentation via GA and in our opinion segmentation, custom variables, page groups or any other way of segmenting traffic is "broken" due to the way GA tracks a user's session.
We have confirmed this with GA engineers for the last 9 months (another meeting with them tomorrow), but we honestly believe that advanced segmentation (especially if you are in eCommerce) is currently not possible in GA.
The most reliable way we have managed to get this to work is with an alternative analytics package (doing a POC at the moment).

Thanks for mentioning the difference, cause I actually had mixed results appearing in the content page reports. I guess I'll setup a second segment for 'Landing pages' only. Thx

I might set up 2 advanced segments for the same section and analyse the differences. Having a clear view on the landing pages are important as well. Cheers

Thanks for confirming this issue, cause I'm currently seeing mixed results! Will take on your recommendations of cross checking for sanity.

Just be aware of the following limitation when using Advanced Segments - this is related to the way Google tracks visitor behaviour during the session:
If for example you configure an Advanced Segment as "Include Page Begins with '/solutions/A'", and then a visitors visits that specific page (or a subdirectory) and then also visits other pages in that session, you will find a few issues:
- /solutions/Y appearing in the Content Page reports (since the user viewed your /solutions/A page and subsequently within that session also viewed /solutions/Y)
- Your segmentation across goals and eCommerce will not work (if you segment on /solutions/A) and hope to see goals originating from that page, you will get mixed results - i.e. also goals or transactions if the user started from another page.
Just do some sanity checks across the data you want to see in the segments - chances are that you will overreport or report on a slightly wrong thing.
-
As Martijn already told it's important to know if you want the advanced segments to segment those sections as landingpages (do people reach the website through that page) or do you want to see all visitors who reached those sections (without having to enter the site through that page)
Because this will give you another Reg.Ex.

Hi Joe,
With some easy regular expressions you should be able to do this and create your advanced segment. I'm not sure if you want the landing pages or pages (the disadvantage is you'll also get the other pages people visited before/after they visited your specified pages) within your segment, so that would be your choice.
The regular expression for your advanced segment would be: ^www.mywebsite.com/solutions/A. The ^ is used for making sure your URL is starting with the followed string/url.
Hope this helps!

How long does Google Analytics credit a source?
I was under the impression that GA credits the source with a conversion if it is the source for the current session but it seems that if the user returns later that the source may still be credited. Is this the case? How long does GA credit a source?

Google Analytics Site Search to new sub-domain
Hi Mozzers, I'm setting up Google's Site Search on a website. However this isn't for search terms, this will be for people filling in a form and using the POST action to land on a results page. This is similar to what is outlined at http://support.google.com/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1012264 ('<a class="zippy zippy-collapse">Setting Up Site Search for POST-Based Search Engines').</a> However my approach is different as my results appear on a sub-domain of the top level domain. Eg.. user is on www.domain.com/page.php user fills in form submits user gets taken to results.domain.com/results.php The issue is with the suggested code provided by Google as copied below.. Firstly, I don't use query strings on my results page so I would have to create an artificial page which shouldn't be a problem. But what I don't know is how the tracking will work across a sub-domain without the _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', '.domain.com']); code. Can this be added in? Can I also add Custom Variables? Does anyone have experience of using Site Search across a sub-domain perhaps to track quote form values? Many thanks!

Google Analytics underreporting
I have a site selling items, I use paypal buttons and get a report using ipn back from paypal telling me when I have sold a item. I also have a Google analytics event setup on the button, and one on the confirmation page.
Reporting & Analytics | | AlanMosley
For example in the last few days I have sold over 10 items from the website, but have only 2 events from the button and none from the confirmation page. The confirmation page depends on the user getting redirected back from PayPal so I can see that being upper reported, but there is no way you can buy without clicking the button.
I have the chrome addon from google to debug your analytics code and it fires every time.
The figures seem to report only about 20% of events over a long period of time. If it was not working at all, I could assume I have not set things up correctly but this is not the case, I get a regular flow of events but at about 205 of sales.
I am very disappointed with GA, seems a waste of time. anyone else had the same expirence?0 -
SEOMoz crawls skewing Avg Visit Duration in Google Analytics
Hello, We are a UK based company. Our Google Analytics account is showing a rise in Avg Visit Duration for 'Direct traffic' since we started using SEOMoz. Are any other users experiencing this issue? We tracked it down to City Seattle, and when doing an Advanced filter by removing Seattle, the results are normal again. What does SEOMoz or other users recommend we do besides continuously using advanced filters? We have enquired about excluding Roger's IP address, but have been told that Roger uses the Amazon cloud, so the IP is not static. See attachment for screenshot of our Google Analytics account of Avg Visit Duration since we began with SEOMoz. Rich Talbot 718g3.gif

Google Analytics Options
A couple of months ago, I read about a new web stats application that is real time but more importantly let's you track user actions on a page (i.e. which buttons were clicked for example). This information would obviously be very helpful in continuing to improve site performance. Anyone have suggestions or know the name of this application? I do not mind paying but am not looking for an enterprise class application.
