Same Page, Multiple URLS- Canonical tag? Redirect?
-
I just read this article about how google views multiple versions of the same page as different pages of duplicate content.
My website, www.telikin.com currently has many versions of the home page. There is:
www.telikin.com
www.telikin.com/index
www.telikin.com/index.php
www.telikin.com/index.php/All of these seem to be their own URLS, If i use the open site explorer tool to search for links pointing to these URLS, the www.telikin.com domain shows about 700 links, and the www.telikin.com/index.php shows about 63 links.
My questions:
Is my SEO suffering as a result of having these different pages? Does google realize that links pointing to www.telikin.com/index.php should count towards the seo of the www.telikin.com page?
If this is hurting my company's website, how do I solve this problem? I am not versed as a webmaster, so I don't understand what the best course of action would be. Should I request that our webmaster somehow redirects all traffic from the other URLS to the main www.telikin.com URL?
Should I be using canonical tags on all important pages? If i do, for example, use a canonical tag on the www.telikin.com page, will Google then know to send all link juice from the www.telikin.com/index.php page to the www.telikin.com page?
We also have a Joomla blog that seems to duplicate pages many times over, but that is a problem that I will have to address another time.
Any comments/suggestions are more than welcome.
Thanks,
Dave

Thank you John,
It looks like you fielded this question in the past, about 14 months ago!

and here is a similar inquiry.

Its strange to me that even though you say google considers www.telikin.com/index.php and www.telikin.com/index.php/ to be the same, they produce a different result when entered into a browser. In fact, the .php/ link ends up hiding some of the images and just showing their alt text...very strange.
I will move forward with having the web master do 301 redirects. Thanks for the help.

You indeed have a duplicate content problem. The PageRank for the www.telikin.com/index.php page is not contributing towards the PageRank for your www.telikin.com page. You should 301 redirect www.telikin.com/index and www.telikin.com/index.php to www.telikin.com. Personally, I don't know how to write the actual redirect, but make sure when you do it that your home page works as you could potentially create an infinite redirect when messing with your site's index page.
The trailing slashes don't matter, meaning Google knows www.telikin.com/index.php/ is the same page as www.telikin.com/index.php, so you don't have to concern yourself with that.

Should my URLs with or without a slash? And how to avoid multiple redirects?
Moz, I am noticing that I need to go back and update my outbound links to your site. There are a lot of them because your content is so great and we love you guys. Could you explain your logic for making the change? Example on my Schema Markup Website Audits page: https://mza.bundledseo.com/blog/state-of-searcher-behavior-revealed/ redirected to: https://mza.bundledseo.com/blog/state-of-searcher-behavior-revealed

Backlinks to an anchor name URL: How Google sees them
I have been searching for the answer to this question and to my surprise have yet to find anything on the web. This is my situation: I have a form at the bottom of one of my pages and have another website that wants to link to this page, more specifically this form. I have an anchor link on the page to this form already. I was planning on sending the anchor name URL to the Webmaster to link to my page so their users will go straight to my form. My question is: do I lose link juice to my URL from this link because it is an anchor name URL? Does Google see this link that goes to a specific portion of my page to be less valuable than if I just linked to the plain URL? Cheers Sean

Pagerank and combining pages
I have a site where my homepage is a PR3. My main menu contains 6 links which are all PR1's. Example: Homepage, link1,link2,link3,link4,link5,link6 I have figured a way to make things easier for my users by combining 3 of those 6 links to my home page. So basically link1,link2 and link4 will now point to my homepage where it will contain the content and tools all in one. I will do the proper redirects on those links to point to my homepage again so google knows I moved them. My question is by moving 3 PR1 pages to my home page which is a PR3 will this increase my pagerank for my home page?

Multiple links to dead pages
I have just taken over a client and have been shocked to see a lot of wasted 'link juice' from hundreds of websites linking to old/dead pages within my client's domain. My question is - what is the best method to re-capture that juice given that it is impractical to change the links at source. Thanks.

Retain keywords with redirect
I manage a site the sells product A and product B (both major keywords for us). If I buy the url www.productB.com and redirect it to the original website, would the original website gain any benefits in search engines? Would the benefits of having a url with the keyword be lessened because there isn't content hosted there, only a redirect to the original site?

Alt Image Tags
Hi, Do you think an alt image tag on an image as a link is going to impart the same juice or targeting as a link with a text anchor? So, for example, if one made a clickable image link with the alt image tag of "bowling balls" would that do as much for you as the text "bowling balls" as the anchor link? Thanks! Best...Michael
