Do external links hurt ?
-
Hi there...
My company develops policy management software for SharePoint (called DocRead). Obviously, our main SEO push is purely for the product as that's what pays the bills.
However, we also issue a weekly SharePoint Community newsletter in HTML as we run a large community group for SharePoint. Each newsletter has lots of outbound links (all coming from the same domain as our product is hosted on). These links won't really have anything to do with 'Policy Management' as they are purely to do with SharePoint.
I was wondering if these will harm our ranking in anyway?
FYI : The newsletters are here : http://www.collaboris.com/sharepoint-newsletters/all-newsletters and the product is here : http://www.collaboris.com/products/policy-and-procedure-management-software
Thanks in advance
Mark

Hi Mark,
If the newsletters aren't adding to your site in any beneficial way (long term, after they have been sent), you could always choose to have them not indexed in Google.
However, having had a quick look at your newsletters and Share Point Community as a whole, these links won't affect your site. They are based around online marketing, tools etc. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You're only linking to trusted resources not dodgy sites.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply and the advice on the anchor text, I am trying to get to grips with all this SEO!
I probably should have bean a bit more concise. I was actually meaning the links OUT from all of our newsletters. For example in this edition we have links to many other SharePoint related sites.

Mark i am a firm believer in links that make sense, obviously the link is not coming from a NBA.com where it would be a non-related issued, but i feel as though you develop that software and that it is what you do and the links you are getting are actually based on a product you developed so i don't see the harm in that, Unless you are trying to manipulate the anchor text into providing miss-matched information.
But from the looks of it that does not seem to be the case. I would monitor the situation and after your next crawl see what difference it has been making.
How long have you been getting multiple links for and what anchor text are you using? I also would not want you guys to get flooded with links from them . After a certain point you should no follow that post.
Also take a look at some of your internal linking structure, you have a lot of blog post with images and NO ANCHOR TEXT for the image. You should definitely change that .

Spammy links
Hi Guys, I have a case which seems to occur more often for our customers. The websites of our customers seem to receive tons of backlinks from websites all over the world (China, Russia, Ukrain, etc). It’s spam we never asked for, we didn’t buy any dodgy linkbuilding packages or anything. Do any of you guys have experience with this matter? We try to disavow the links but it takes too much time and we will never manage to disavow 100% of all links. Examples are www.keukensduitsland.nl and www.m2beveiliging.nl Hope anyone has experience and maybe even solutions for this matter. Thanks!

Linking Between Sites
Hi everyone, Hope you are all doing well. If a company owns several different websites that are supposed to be different brands but are part of the same niche/sector is it OK to link between them? Or would this be seen as violation? Thanks

Pinterest and Link Juice
I can't understand why our Pinterest boards don't show up as external links (nor do our YouTube videos). However, one of our competitor's Pinterest boards is in the top ten as far as their external links go. Clues?

Link building
Hello everyone, I am building links for an e-commerce site and I need to increase the value of the links we get by placing them on specific pages in order to pass more juice to inner pages. Which part of the website should I point the links to? Because there is no content section on the site what I can do is either link to the homepage (not an option) or link to inner pages such as category/subcategory/product pages. My doubt is that it wouldn't look natural to link to products pages from a piece of content or from a site where people go with the intention not to buy but to get information. Any opinions on this?

When placing content on external sites, what are some best practices for back links?
Hi there, I am working on a content strategy that includes placing content (i.e. bylined articles, how-to's, guest blogs, etc.) on other web sites and embedding links back to our site. In some cases we're very limited to what we can do with our bank links (i.e. just a company url), and in other cases we are free to place multiple anchor links within the content. In cases where we have no limitations, what are some best practices for implementing back links? I understand it's important to link to deep pages (not just our home page), have diverse anchor text, and make the anchor links relevant to the surrounding content. Are there other things I should be thinking about in order to maximize the SEO value of such placements? For example, is it better to have just one anchor link per placement? Or should I aim to embed multiple anchor links within a single placement? Any advice would be much appreciated! Sincerely, Debra

Are you careful about linking back to sites that link to you?
Suppose that a trusted website added you to their recommended links page. Do you worry that linking back to them from a page on your site will diminish the value of the original link?

How many nofollow links should we build to have a natural link profile
Hi guys, As with many link builders we have been building lots of dofollow links for our site, so many that mainly our incoming links are dofollow. Some pages have 99.5% dofollow external links which I know is not very natural. In your experience in terms of percentage how much should you have in terms of nofollow external links in your link profile. I noticed SEOMoz has about 12-13% nofollow external links, shall I go with this figure? Thanks guys. David
