In Open Site Explorer is it possible to use wildcards?
-
If I have a section on my website called lists with articles in there can I use wildcards in Open Site Explorer to find how many backlinks all articles in that section have - and ideally which pages are most linked to?
Something like www.example.com/lists/* to give number of backlinks to all articles in that website section and which are the most highly linked to.
Would be a great feature to have!
Cheers

Hi Simon,
You are actually talking about regex (or regular expressions) here in terms of matching. Using wildcards is a part of regex. If you are unfamiliar with regex then you can read about it here.
Also to reiterate, you can still find what you are looking for within the 'Top Pages' section of OSE. It lists all subfolders (or website section as you put it) along with the individual pages contained within these sections. A tip would be to sort the Page Title URLs by page authority (descending) as the more important sections are likely to be listed before the individual pages within each section. However, this is not always the case. To make it easier to find exactly what you want then just download the CSV and you can sort and/or find the data you need within Excel very easily.
Adam.

Hi Adam and thanks for the answer. However, I'm after the total number of backlinks to all pages within a website section. I have over 5,000 pages in that section and I would like to know the most linked to.
It's not practical to do a search for each of those pages one-by-one.
Cheers
Simon
PS. Sorry where did the Regex mention come from?
-
Hi Simon,
In a nutshell, no you cannot use wildcards in OSE.
There is also no need to use regex. You can easily see what you want by selecting the 'Top Pages' tab, which shows a list of your pages and how many links are pointing to each page.
Hope that helps,
Adam.

Moz Spam Analysis vs. GWMT Links to Your Site
Hi Moz Community, I have been conducting some link auditing and started comparing the Moz Spam Analysis tool with the links provided in Google WMT. It appears that the Moz Spam Analysis tools shows an aggregate of links that Moz may or may not consider spam, however when you download and look at Google's "Links to Your Site" list it provides every link iteration known to man that's pointing to the target website - without providing any hints as to whether or not a link may be considered spam by Google. The biggest concern I have here is that Google is picking up a lot of links, which I consider spam, that do not appear in the Moz Spam Analysis results. I guess the question(s) I have are: Does it make sense to compare these two data sets? Has anyone else tried this comparison and how did you use the information to make positive changes? Any recommendations when it comes to determining if an external link is spam/hurting/helping a website? Thank you!

Opensite Explorer
It may sound like a stupid question but what kind of likes and shares is Opensite Explorer referring at? Is it just how much your page gets liked and shared or about the posts on FB?

Using this service
Hello, I have had this service for my free month. I had over 150 errors on my website which I fixed. My problem is that in doing this my traffic is actually worse and I have now fallen completely off google. From the start of my website I would slowly creep to within t he top 3 pages of google for the search term apron and aprons, then suddenly I fall to somewhere around page 20. No one, even people I hired has been able to explain this. I hear google changes, it takes time, etc, etc... Its been 5 years and other newer companies are on the top page right in their first year.. After working with this site for a month, I have looked to page 65 for apron and aprons and still cant find me. And I know some people say Alexa is a gimmick, but now instead of rising to 10 million and falling back down to 23 million, Alexa says there is no info regarding my website whatsoever. Any advice? I was excited to have this service but I cant get my partner to agree to keep it if my month long result is worse then I ever was before. And please dont say it takes time , 5 years is more than enough. Thank you in advance!

How does SEOMoz crawl sites? Does it follow the sitemap?
I only ask because in my report it returned a few "no follow" links. Was wondering how SEOMoz operates.

Link from Dr. Oz web site not being seen, what are we doing wrong?
Newbie so this may be SEO 101... Quick back story: My wife Lauri is a Dream Expert who has been on over 5,000 radio shows, TV shows like Good Morning America, the Today show, the View, in major magazines and newspapers, the list goes on and on, I'm not bragging actually the opposite. Lauri barely exists online and to top it off we don't seem to be getting any "link juice" from some big sites that have linked to us. Here is just one example of many: Our site: theDreamZone.com Here is a page on Dr Oz site that links to us, anchor text at top right "Click here": When you use On site Explorer this link isn't there, what are we doing wrong? Our plan is to build a new site (LauriTheDreamExpert.com) and get these links and many others pointing to us correctly so she can get the exposure she's earned. Lauri was also on the Dr Oz TV show : Watch it if you like. Thanks for any wisdom, Mike
