SEO Tools You Can't Live Without?
-
Hi Guys,
I'm currently in the middle of creating a comprehensive blog post covering SEO Tools that I wouldn't be able to work without. So far I've got the following down, as I use these on a day to day basis and they make my job infinitely easier.
- SEOMoz / OSE
- AHrefs
- BuzzStream
- Scrapebox
- Xenu / Screaming Frog
- Excel
- GWT / Analytics / Adwords Keyword Tool
What tools or subscriptions do you use on a daily basis and couldn't be without?
-
Google Webmaster Tools
-
What is GWT? Can you give a description or link? Thanks in advance!
-
Most of my work is focused on offsite optimization, so here's my list:
1. SEOMoz: I like OSE and the rank tracker as well, even though it's functions are pretty simple.
2. Majestic SEO: especially their site explorer.
3. GeoRanker: I use it for more advanced SERP reports by tracking search results as they are displayed to users from different countries and cities (especially useful in my local seo campaigns).
4. Ahrefs: cannot live without it.
5. Linkdiagnosis: basic but interesting backlink checker
6. GWT: I've given up Analytics and all other Google products, GTW I still use on a regular basis for to configure sitelinks, check for backlinks and discover search queries relevant to my sites.
-
I have to add in Ahrefs. I checked them out but I never really got engaged.
Also citation labs has Link Prospector tool. Which is great for link building from list standpoint to find websites that could be viable options for links.
-
We are trialing Team work live to manage our projects. Seems like a good bit of software and much cheaper than basecamp which we previously use.
SEO moz and Google Docs are used daily here. Along with Majestic at least weekly.

Hi Chad,
Thanks for your contribution. Big fan of screaming frog myself.
I find Majestic isn't quite as accurate as Ahrefs, but SEMRush is invaluable and I currently use SerpBook but authority labs looks a bit better for the same price point!
-
Day in and out, I have to do on page analysis and off page analysis; so screaming frog is one great desktop software that I use to see lengths on title tags, meta desc, meta keywords, on page content, keyword density and other internal linking b/w pages.
The offsite I use and cannot live without Majestic SEO backlink profile lookup and SEM Rush to see overall trends when studying competition. These two are web-based and offer a free version; however, the pro version is worth the money!
I use Authority Labs to track keywords that reports tracking for all three search engine platforms. They offer reports to you and show you up and down movement on all your keywords and even the long-tail-keywords!
Hope these tools help with your post!

My keywords aren't performing for my Umbraco site
A client of mine has just redesigned their site which was pretty small (homepage, about us page and contact us page) and now it includes homepage, about us page, 3 services pages, 5 blog posts and a contact us page. their domain authority is 5, so that gives you an idea of their size. We updated their key pages with keyword optimised content and added the keyword to their meta title and meta description. they're in the process of adding the alt tags and also they need to enable meta tags for the blog posts. Everything is quite in the process at the moment and their organic traffic is low. But I believe that some of the keywords should start moving places for the pages that have been optimised and they haven't. Is there any reason for this? I believe the services pages which have meta tags should have started ranking at least in very low position for the selected keywords. Is there something I'm missing? Thank you!

Server responds with 302 but the pages doesn't appear to redirect?
I'm working on a site and am running some basic audits, including a campaign within Moz. When I put the domain into any of these tools, including response header checkers, the response is a 302 that says there is a redirect to an Error Page. However, the page itself doesn't redirect, and resolves fine in the browser. But all of the audit tools cant seem to get any information from any of the pages. What is the best way to troubleshoot what is going on here? Thanks.

SEO for a plumber?
Hello, How does a small, local business win at SEO (without abusing directories, articles, and paid links)? It seems that everyone is saying "create unique content", but that just doesn't seem realistic for a small plumber in a big metro area. One might suggest coming up with helpful articles about plumbing tips, etc., but there are thousands of spun articles on article directories already. On page optimization is in place, we are listed in the main directories, we've asked the people we know to link to us, and we are engaged in social media. What would you recommend next? Thanks, Will

Will blocking google and SE's from indexing images hurt SEO?
Hi, We have a bit of a problem where on a website we are managing, there are thousands of "Dynamically" re-sized images. These are stressing out the server as on any page there could be upto 100 dynamically re-sized images. Google alone is indexing 50,000 pages a day, so multiply that by the number of images and it is a huge drag on the server. I was wondering if it maybe an idea to blog Robots (in robots.txt) from indexing all the images in the image file, to reduce the server load until we have a proper fix in place. We don't get any real value from having our website images in "Google Images" so I am wondering if this could be a safe way of reducing server load? Are there any other potential SEO issues this could cause?? Thanks

Best solution to get mass URl's out the SE's index
Hi, I've got an issue where our web developers have made a mistake on our website by messing up some URL's . Because our site works dynamically IE the URL's generated on a page are relevant to the current URL it ment the problem URL linked out to more problem URL's - effectively replicating an entire website directory under problem URL's - this has caused tens of thousands of URL's in SE's indexes which shouldn't be there. So say for example the problem URL's are like www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/ It seems I can correct this by doing the following: 1/. Use Robots.txt to disallow access to /incorrect-directory/* 2/. 301 the urls like this:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | James77
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/
301 to:
www.mysite.com/correct-directory/folder1/page1/ 3/. 301 URL's to the root correct directory like this:
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page2/
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder2/ 301 to:
www.mysite.com/correct-directory/ Which method do you think is the best solution? - I doubt there is any link juice benifit from 301'ing URL's as there shouldn't be any external links pointing to the wrong URL's.0 -
Ranking for our member's company names without giving them all away!
Hi, We have a directory of 25,000 odd companies who use our site. We have a strong PR site and want to rank a page for each company name. Some initial testing on one or two company names brings us to #2 after the company's own web site in the format: "Company Name Reviews and Feedback" - so it works well. We want to do this for all 25,000 of our members, however we do not wish to make it easy for our competitors to scrape through our member database!! e.g. using: www.ourdomain.com/randomstring/company-name-(profile).php unfortunately with the above performing a search on google for site:domain.com/()/()(profile).php would bring up all records. Are there any tried and tested ways of achieving what we're after here? Many Thanks.
