Massive decreases in traffic
-
Hi i've been looking at the affects of googles algorithmic updates over the last couple years and the impact on sites/competitors i have been monitoring in the space.
Two sites which surprised me, in having a dramatic decline in search traffic were:
kriskris.com (over 200k visitors to around 10k)
only-cookware.com (from 40k visitors at its peak to only around 1000k)
(semrush traffic data attached)
Both sites have great quality content and social signals.
The only thing i can think of is a over-optimization of anchor text, and types of links.
-
Have you review your backlinks in Open Site Explorer? Some of them look a little fishy, especially the ones for kriskris with the anchor text "lose weight fast" from sights that are mainly in Chinese and also have links to viagra and other such sites (http://www.xshz.com.cn/shownews.asp?id=220 for example).
-
Check out your Google Analytics data and just look at the organic search traffic. Can you pinpoint any major drops? Correlate those dates to known algorithm updates and that should give you a starting point.
If the drops correlate to Apr 24, May 25 or Oct 5 then you're likely dealing with Penguin and the backlinks are your problem.
If they correlate to Panda dates then start looking for duplicate and thin content issues which are the main component of Panda.
I'm guessing this is Panda though. I looked at a couple of your articles on kriskris.com and there are multiple copies across the web. Are these articles originally yours? If not, then you won't be able to rank a site in the age of Panda with duplicated content. If so, are you intentionally syndicating them?
-
Yes your quite right, I would look for other factors for this, have you been losing links, have you picked up any bad links, you could start here by checking : http://www.linkdetox.com/ .
-
If you actually look at the traffic graph from semrush the declines haven't been recent, they have both been in decline since the start of the year. What reasons besides the fact that their backlink profile may be over optimized with exact match anchors, is there for this decline?
The sites have great content, good social media signals (kriskris has over 16,000 followers!) I'm just surprised quality sites like these are getting absolutely slammed.
-
I have seen a very similar issue also, however the last week traffic was beginning to start to climb again only for the new Google update which you can be 100% sure has not finished yet, I think you just have to weather the storm for a little while longer and wait to see where the dice will fall after the completion of the update.
-
For those of us that have not received warnings on WMT, I'd suggest you wait about a week to see if your rankings recover.
There was some sort of small update or change in Google's algorithm and one of my sites dropped 30-40% and just recovered about 20% traffic.
Sometimes these fluctuations happen, don't panic just yet!
-
Those are huge decreases....looks like Google is controlling cash flow into businesses. I just fell from #2 to #5 for my main key term. I will have to start using their PPC.

How does putting a trial sign up code mid-blog post effect SEO? Do you think it will make my content seem less pleasing, therefor decrease the page rank??
I'm working on driving trials for our product - we have a number of blog posts that rank on page #1 of Google, and we get 2-3 trial sign ups per day from them. I'd like to put trial signup boxes about midway down each post to see if I can increase the number of trial signups that come directly from our blog. Do you think I can be "penalized" for this, since it's mid- blog-post content? Do you think Google will view this negatively?

Google Mobile algo traffic issue?
Hello, I have just been approach by a website owner - site isn't mobile friendly in any way - and they've seen a significant fall off in traffic since 23 Jan... backlink profile is clean (and no linkbuilding undertaken) - nothing else has changed... - more than half their traffic is via mobile devices and they've lost a good 1/3 of their traffic - and drilling deeper it's their organic traffic that's been hit. Anybody else seeing similar? edit... for reference: https://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/google-released-mobile-algorithm-think.html

Wordpress to HubSpot CMS - I had major crawl issues post launch and now traffic is down 400%
Hi there good looking person! Our traffic went from 12k visitors in july to 3k visitors in july. << www.thedsmgroup.com >>When we moved our site from wordpress to the hubspot COS (their CMS system), I didnt submit a new sitemap to google webmaster tools. I didn't know that I had to... and to be honest, I've never submitted or re-submitted a sitemap to GWT. I have always built clean sites with fresh content and good internal linking and never worried about it. Yoast kind of took care of the rest, as all of my sites and our clients' sites were always on wordpress. Well, lesson learned. I got this message on June 27th in GWT_http://www.thedsmgroup.com/: Increase in not found errors__Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs that return a 404 (Page Not Found) error. Investigating these errors and fixing them where appropriate ensures that Google can successfully crawl your site's pages._One month after our site launched we had 1,000 404s on our website. Ouch. Google thought we had a 1,200 page website with only 200 good pages and 1,000 error pages. Not very trust worthy... We never had a 404 ever before this, as we added a plugin to wordpress that would 301 any 404 to the homepage, so we never had a broken link on our site, which is not ideal for UX, but as far as google was concerned, our site was always clean. Obviously I have submitted a new sitemap to GWT a few weeks ago, and we are moving in the right direction... **but have I taken care of everything I need to? I'm not sure. Our traffic is still around 100 visitors per day, not 400 per day as it was before we launched the new site.**Thoughts?I'm not totally freaking out or anything, but a month ago we ranked #1 and #2 for "marketing agency nj", now we aren't in the top 100. I've never had a problem like this. _I added a few screen grabs from Google Webmaster Tools that should be helpful.__Bottom line, have I done everything I need to or do I need to do something with all of these "not found" error details that I have in GWT?_None of these "not found" pages have any value and I'm not sure how Google even found them... Almost no organic traffic
Hi, We have an online store, it is up & running since January 1st. Since then we really didn't see any improvements on our organic traffic at all. About 10% of our traffic is coming from organic search, and more than 20% of organic search actually coming from branded keywords. We haven't paid a lot of attention to SEO so far. I mean, we paid attention to the practices, however we focused on a better customer/user experience more than SEO. We improved our product pages, reduced checkout process to one step, used bigger icons / buttons. According to our customers, our website is pretty easy to navigate and shop. We haven't received any major complaint so far. Except couple of products, all the content we have is original, we didn't use any manufacturer product content or copied from another website. However, looks like all these efforts don't mean a lot to Google, unless we have a solid backlinks. Currently i am considering to make category pages NOINDEX and implement microdata from schema.org. However, Is it good idea to make category pages NOINDEX for an ecommerce website? I would like to hear your comments/recommendations what else we can do to create some organic traffic.

How to get traffic from a particular Geographical region?
Our company is based out of India and has a web site with .in domain ; however our target customers are from North America and Australia.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | TPS2013
The problem is we get as high as 70% of organic traffic from India.
This 70% traffic from India has little use to us. Possibly because we have ”.in “ domain the Google local search is active.
How to reverse this situation; I mean we are looking for more traffic from across the globe except India.
Any suggestions ? P.S. Changing domain from .in to .com is not an option as its the part of our brand advertised for last 7 years1 -
Why is Google Webmaster Tools reporting a massive increase in 404s?
Several weeks back, we launched a new website, replacing a legacy system moving it to a new server. With the site transition, webroke some of the old URLs, but it didn't seem to be too much concern. We blocked ones I knew should be blocked in robots.txt, 301 redirected as much duplicate data and used canonical tags as far as I could (which is still an ongoing process), and simply returned 404 for any others that should have never really been there. For the last months, I've been monitoring the 404s Google reports in Web Master Tootls (WMT) and while we had a few hundred due to the gradual removal duplicate data, I wasn't too concerned. I've been generating updated sitemaps for Google multiple times a week with any updated URLs. Then WMT started to report a massive increase in 404s, somewhere around 25,000 404s per day (making it impossible for me to keep up). The sitemap.xml has new URL only but it seems that Google still uses the old sitemap from before the launch. The reported sources of 404s (in WMT) don't exist anylonger. They all are coming from the old site. I attached a screenshot showing the drastic increase in 404s. What could possibly cause this problem? wmt-massive-404s.png
