Can Sitemap Be Used to Manage Canonical URLs?
-
We have a duplicate content challenge that likely has contributed to us loosing SERPs especially for generic keywords such as "audiobook," "audiobooks," "audio book," and "audio books."
Our duplicate content is on two levels.
1. The first level is at our web store, www.audiobooksonline.com.
Audiobooks are sometimes published in abridged, unabridged, on compact discs, on MP3 CD by the same publisher. In this case we use the publisher description of the story for each "flavor" = duplicate content.
Can we use our sitemap to identify only one "flavor" so that a spider doesn't index the others?
2. The second level is that most online merchants of the same publisher's audio book use the same description of the story = lots of duplicate content on the Web.
In that we have 11,000+ audio book titles offered at our Web store, I expect Google sees us as having lots of duplicated (on the Web) content and devalues our site.
Some of our competitors who rank very high for our generic keywords use the same publisher's description.
Any suggestions on how we could make our individual audio book title pages unique will be greatly appreciated.

Your sitemap.xml can't be used to solve this issue, Larry. The sitemap is only used to tell the search engines which pages exist on the site, not what to do if many of those pages share similar content.
In your case, likely the best approach is to use the rel=canonical tag to inform the search engines that you aware that the different formats of the audiobooks share similar descriptions, and to pick one format to be the primary page. Once you've determined the primary page, the other formats' pages would use the canonical tag in their headers to point to the primary page.
This essentially tells the search engines "these other pages are useful to the user, so I don't want to hide them, but they are really variations of the primary page, so assign all their value to the primary page, please".
This process is only a suggestion to the search engines, but it is usually heeded. The only real alternative would be to combine all the different format pages into one page with a description of the book, then listing the other formats and their prices. Kinda doubt your eCommerce system would allow this "out of the box". (You would then 301-redirect all the other format pages to the new main page.)
As for the fact that the book descriptions are the same as the publisher's and all the other sites - the only way around this is to write your own custom descriptions. There are many reasons the other sites could be ranking well even with those duplicate descriptions, ranging from better overall site authority, to having been online longer, to having better, more powerful incoming links.
It's a tough spot to be in, but you could start by rewriting the descriptions for, say, the top 25 books (according to your Analytics and your own instincts for which ones are the most valuable sales) and see if that results in an improvement to rankings and conversions.
One other way to beat the duplicate content in this case would be to get customers to leave reviews which are included on each page. These reviews would be different from other sites, making the overall content look different to the search engines. But this is also a lot of work to get to scale up as your customers must be encouraged to come back to your site at a later date to leave the review.
Hope that helps;
Paul

Making Shopify URL's Simpler - Losing the words 'collection', 'product' and 'page' in a Shopify store URL. Any advice?
Hi Mozers! I have a Shopify store (of which there are many advantages) however one big SEO disadvantage, is that my URL structures contravene all Moz advice on dynamic URL structure and whats more I am reminded about this every week when I have a Moz site crawl and I have a batch of URL's that are longe than the 75 characters. A Shopify URL will run www.domain name.com/collections/collection-name/product/product-name. According to advice a it should be www.domain name.com/collection-name/product-name - Don't even get started on sub-collections! I sell portfolio books, album etc and keepsake memory boxes (so long keywords) AND, I have a long(ish) business name. So, For user experience and keyword length, do I just ignore trying to achieve a dynamic URL under 75 characters? When I have asked Shopify, the say their URL's are an integral part of the "Ruby on Rails" system, so nothing can be done Or can it ??? I can't be the only Moz member with this issue can I ??

ECommerce URL's
This is based on a clothing retailer, eCommerce site. In an effort to reduce the length of our product names, we are considering removing terms like long-sleeve, short-sleeve, etc., but leaving that information in the URL. Now, the concern is that we would lose some traction in the SERP's if those descriptive words are left out as the product name is also our page title. Then I think keywords as broad as long-sleeve shirt wouldn't serve us well anyways. One idea we have is that the alt tag on the product image could still display the longer product name that would include long-sleeve, etc. thus having the keyword on the product page. Any ideas or suggestions? Hope this is clear. Seems redundant from a user standpoint to state long-sleeve, etc. in every product name. Thanks - your answers are always so helpful!

Custom Landing Page URLs
I will begin creating custom landing pages optimized for long-tail keywords. Placing the keywords in the URL is obviously important -- Question: would it be detrimental to rankings to have extra characters extending past the keyword? I'm not able to use tracking code, but need to put an identifier in the URL (clp = custom landing page). For example, is "www.domain.com/silver-fish.html" going to perform meaningfully better than "www.domain.com/silver-fish-clp.html" for the kw phrase "silver fish"? There will obviously be a lot of on-page optimization in addition to just structuring the URLs. Thank you. SIMbiz

Wordpress when to use posts or pages
Hi Guys, I have a network of EMD sites that currently use a homepage and then we have a blog page which has 5-6 posts on. Is this the best way to do it with sites under 10-20 pages? Or should we create say 3-4 new pages/categories and drop the posts relevant to each page/category in there? Thank you Jon

URL question
Hi guys, the pro campaign thing you got going is wicked, love it. I'm recieving good results with my keywords and have noticed that categories that go beyond sub/sub/sub don't do to well. So I wanna move those that do one step up which makes it go from: http://spytunes.com/practice-guitar/advanced-routine/scales/aeolian to here http://spytunes.com/practice-guitar/advanced-routine/aeolian The existing menu system that follow all these categories across the site will soon go so it won't be a user friendly problem, I will have other type of menus. But, and here is the question: Would I greatly benefit from taking the non existent menu away and just go for: http://spytunes.com/practice-guitar/aeolian while i'm at it? Or do I stick with my current structure? I guess my real question is; how much is there to flat URLs? Cheers -dan lundholm spytunes.com
