How can I find and fix my broken links
-
There are a number(110) links that SEOmoz has found to have 404 errors. I have been able to find and fix many of them but there are links that are coming from our home page that do not seem to exist. I cannot even find the links in our system in wordpress. Is there something obvious that I am missing? Is there a way to locate where the links are originating from?

HI Paul,
I agree 100% with you, in the case you want to check external links. That's why I try to solve my errors on GWT so I can see new external errors showing up.
However in this case I got confused by this sentence:
_ I have been able to find and fix many of them but there are links that are coming from our home page that do not seem to exist._
I thought that he was speaking aboiut links generated inside his homepage. However if the case are external links, I recommend spry advice, but only for few links. If you have many of them you can consider to use GWT API and download all the broken links with their own linking urls. An information which google used to share before but that now is not available in GWT (at least not in mine)

Mememax, you're talking about a completely different situation.
Screaming Frog/Xenu are only capable of broken links that your own site links to.
The SEOMoz and WMT crawls are finding missing pages that other sites are linking to on your site. I.e. broken incoming links as opposed to broken internal links.
While both are good to check, if you aren't watching for and fixing your 404s that other sites are linking to, you are potentially throwing away hugely valuable incoming link juice. (Hint: it's even more valuable juice than what is passing from your internal links)
A simple example of this occurs when you just move a page to a new URL, and update your own site's navigation. A Screaming Frog crawl would show no 404 as a result (because you updated your own site's link), but all the incoming links to that moved page could now be 404ing. It's entirely possible that other sites were linking to that page. If you don't watch your broken incoming links reports either in SEOMoz to WMT, you won't know that those other sites are still trying to link. And then you'd be throwing away that incoming link equity.
Makes sense?
Paul
P.S, Of course, you can also monitor your 404s in Google Analytics, but that only shows you broken incoming links that are getting traffic. The other tools mentioned will show you nearly all the broken incoming links even if they're not currently driving traffic. By fixing them, you'll rescue the ranking value and also be ready if they later start to drive actual referral traffic.

Sincerely I've never used seomoz tools for crawwling my site to find 404s.
I always used screamingfrog/xenu(last one is free), which gives you not only the url where the error is found but also the type of links and its anchor text. In that way it would be easy to quick find the error, because maybe it's a realtive links which is malformed and pointing to a non existing url.

Funny, there was just a question about this a few hours ago (hint, hint SEOmoz team). Here was my advice...
The SEOmoz report will give you one referrer for each 404 error. I've had better success and more complete information using Google Webmaster Tools. You get the information "straight from the horse's mouth" as it were.
- Log in to https://www.google.com/webmasters/
- Go to Health > Crawl Errors
- Click "Not Found"
- For each listed, click the URL
- In the pop up window, the third tab will list the pages that link in.
-
Click on "Export to csv" in the top right hand corner of your crawl report.
When the file downloads, there is a field called "referrer" which will tell you the exact page the broken link was found on.

What is a natural link?
Hi everyone, I'm trying to better understand what is meant by a natural link and would appreciate any assistance. Doing some competitor link analysis I've noticed a web developer who has created a directory for all its customers. This is not a directory in the traditional sense of being of use to an end user, but to my untrained eyes, it looks like an internal directory used solely for the purpose of link building. For all I know this might be perfectly good practice in the industry, but as a beginner, I'm attempting to get an understanding of things. My question is, what precisely is meant by a natural link? If the above scenario is all ok, whereby there are businesses in the same field of work, but ultimately could be in any given location, on a directory, are they natural links? Do these kind of directories that don't service an end user, exist if the common feature between them is say location only, or an seo agency only? Appreciate I could be completely out of kilter on this, but it seems the benefit on SERPs is pretty significant for something that seems pretty "unnatural" to me? Any guidance would be appreciated...tom

Can't remove and can't disavow...
Wondering if anyone could help me. A client is suffering a Google penalty at the moment which is harming their performance. That said it is properly the best penalty they could have got..the site has a penalty which is stopping them ranking as high on keywords which they have been spamming links for. I say the best penalty they could have got because, other than these keywords, the site is still performing as well as before in the engines. Have been trying to clear up the backlinks for the past couple of months and just when I think im winning I discover some 32,000 blog comments on one domain 6 weeks or so ago!! - [http://www. iimpact.co.uk/blog/about?ss=%25&replytoc&rep&d=http://8;d=http://166",.moveForm("comment-1628", "1628", addComment.m&replytocom=265](http://www.iimpact.co.uk/blog/about?ss=%25&replytoc&rep&d=http://8;d=http://166",.moveForm("comment-1628", "1628", addComment.m&replytocom=265) example url, I broke it on purpose as to not make it a backlink With that many links i will not even try and contact the site, I put in the disavow in google that there is no way I can get these removed and explained it etc, however, they, again, rejected the reconsideration request saying they are still not happy with the links. At a bit of a loss here. It's starting to look that the best approach will be to write off the half a dozen terms and go a little more long tail. The site will not rank for (this is an example as would not want to give the client away) door knockers. They used to be first page but now are page four. However they remain page one for terms such as brass door knockers, cheap door knockers, chrome door knockers etc. In WMT ranking report they have hits from 1200 words ranking in the top 5 in the past 30 days and 3000 in the top ten. Im a considering trying to up the rankings of these words at the expense of the ones which we cannot seem to get the penalty off. Any thoughts please.

over the past year so around every corner I discover something new. One the
things I have found are that majority of links to the site is coming from an
outside blog but digging deeper I found that the blog is actually on the same

alone?0 -
Outbound links
We are working with a large, global customer that has asked us to link to their website from about 5,000 pages of our website. The links would either point to one page on their website, or they would point to specific pages throughout their website. Is this a bad thing from an SEO perspective, as in - would either of us be penalized from search engines for doing this?

I have quality links coming in but with year terms such as 2012 in there, if i want to change them all to 2013 for example would it be badly seen by Google? I cant say i feel comfortable about doing it but they are my links and are related to our products. Any advice much appreciated.

Value of Inbound Links to Pages With a lot of Outbound Links
Suppose you have a resource page of the Top 50 Awesome Sites in your niche. Since there are about 50 outbound links, then I would think there will be less Page Rank being passed to internal pages from internal links on the resource page. Since you are getting less PR passed to internal pages, are there other ways the inbound links can be beneficial, such as increasing the diversity of links of your domain? Sites like SEO Optimise seem to create a lot of Top 30 Resources lists and I have read that they think it is a strong tactic.

Linking articles to each other
I've been using white-hat article marketing to post original content about my niche to credible article directories (yes, I realize many of them were recently devalued). My question is: Is it a good or bad idea to have future articles link to older articles, as a way to increase the chances of having the older articles indexed, or increasing the amount of link juice they pass to my site (since they point to my site)? I get 2 links per article and was thinking of using 1 to point to a prior (related) article, and the other to point to my site.
