Hi James, sorry for the delay. You can access your source code (ctrl+U in non ie browsers or right click + view source code), and search for <title>(using ctrl+F), if you want to improve your seo skills I really advise you to try coding domething and studying a bit your html code so you can easily spot wrong things, since errors are not always 404s :-)</p></title>

Hi James, I agree with Keri, the beginners' guide is a great content developed by the seomoz guys. If you want to achieve the success, you have to prepare yourself, and know at least the key elements of a page because there you'll want to include your most important keywords.
- title: text shown on top of you page and in blue in google result page. You want there some keywords and at the beginning if possible
- meta description: that's the short descriptive text below the title in google serps. You need to write compelling descriptions to attract users' attention and have your keyword bolded so to improve the CTR
Fix those two elements, try to enahcne the density of your restaurant in totnes keyphrase in your restaurant page and you'll be near the success

The Beginner's Guide to SEO will help you with some of these questions as well. http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo

Hi mememax,
Thank you for the reply, very interesting Indeed. I will speak to my web guy and ask him to make some changes. Why is my keyword ranking for restaurants totnes not actually picking it up from the Restaurant page ? But from my home page according to link analysis.
What is Meta Description again ?
Also the titles ? Is that when you click view source in the background ?
Thanks for the help
James

Hi James, I'm seeing that your not focusing only on restaurant keywords since your business ismore htan just a restaurant. I think that you're not achieveing high results due to how much that keyword is diluted on your homepage.
1st: you have a page made for restaurant keyword http://theseatroutinn.co.uk/Restaurant.html use that. Try to enhance that page to achieve better links and better rankings
2nd you always use the same title: "The Sea Trout Inn in South Devon, Near Totnes - Luxury Bed and Breakfast and Restaurant - XXXXX" The xxx part seems to me the only one you change. Try to make shorter titles (normally less than 60 characters) and don't go after everything in all pages, but focus. In the restaurant page you may think aboutchanging it to: "Luxury Restaurant in Totnes | Eat in the South Trouth Inn". In the meta description you may try something more attractive including a call to action like "Do you want an enjoyable lunch in Totnes? Try the south throuth inn a luxury restaurant in totnes"
In that way you'll have more different titles in you website and pages highly focused which won't cannibalize rankings from one to other.

Hello, Here's how I'm gathering keywords for my new website. I'm using a hrefs to gather (through looking at 50 competitors) many top content topics in the industry. I will make a list of hot keywords. Then I'm going to look at keyword planner and Google and add to the list. What else can I do? Tips/Articles/Videos welcome.

Can i get some insight as to why this is #1 on google?
So... our results keep slipping little by little. I am trying to understand the rhyme and reason to it all (aren't we all?)

Since Penguin, one website seems to have strongly benefited from the update. And I can't seem to understand why except maybe for the lack of seo efforts which resulted in no bad efforts.
Search for "chaussures grandes tailles" in google.FR, you will find what I am talking about. This is what I seemed to have gathered. The #1 result has the KW in both their title and description is using blatant keyword stuffing (ie just astring of keyword with no phrase structure), has done little with links or optimization, does have 300 facebook fans (but they seem to have been bought according to the last 3 months activity). Text is very limited on their site. They have a lower authority than other websites. They are also a newcomer as far as the market goes. It is important to note, that they also rank #1 on many of the related field keyword or top 3. So according to google this is a "winning" website as of now.and that is why it grabbed my attention. The #2 results, is a big website, equivalent to zappos or the like, seems to have redone their optimization following penguin and to me seems to do a pretty good job at writing "natural" content for the user, not for google, as much as possible without killing their seo chances. Their authority should be good, and tons of people are linking to them. They also do use a lot of PR blog/article.(legit ones though I am not sure about before). They invest heavily in adwords and ads altogether (tv/radio/etc..). They are the big guy but are not specialized on this keyword. The lower results, are not as representative, a mish mash of good and bad but all are specialized stores in this market including mine. They all get some ranking on some of the major keywords but not nearly as much as that #1 website which is killing it all (see semrush for more on it). So I thought I would focus on these 2 top (neither of which are mine) to start a conversation.Though feel free to comment if you have any hindsight on any of them. Can anyone explain to me why the #1 can possibly be #1? I would love to hear everyone's opinion on the matter.
I fully understand that in the long run that #1 might not be #1 forever, but then again it has been several months now at least and the longer that last, the more likely they are to gain new (possibly repeat) customers...0
