Best way to build inbound links?

Recently I learned that there are links that are nofollow that google doesn't consider part of SEO.
I was curious to know and also to help other new users what the community thinks the best practices are in growing your inbound links.

How about for software hosting?
I would write the Software Hosting Bible. Kickass better than anything anybody anywhere has already done. That would help educate noobs and bring them back to your website. Then who will they think of for hosting. Every page of that Bible would compete in the SERPs for relevant queries and you would have house ads on every page that lead visitors to your signup.

You know the cuzie model is a great one. Unfortunately my company takes itself a tad too serious for that... Still there are ways this model can be applied I'm sure and I appreciate the helpful responses here.

I think that the methods will vary depending upon your product.
For blankets and pillows you have probably heard stories, usually about kids, that attest to their attachment to a blanket or pillow. If you could get a nice group of those stories that would be a start. Ask people to contribute their favorite story... if they contribute they will share it. Offer a prize for the ten best stories that the author gives you permission to publish. Kids stories and pet stories get shared like crazy on FB.
Google "I love my blanket" and similar searches "favorite blanket" to start gathering ideas.

What about beverage koozies? That has been WAY over done. Every bar, mom and pop store, EVERY company on earth has or sells koozies.
But I dare you not to link, like, tweet, circle, etc. this site:
BEST content I have ever read! Their blogs rock. They have wicked sweet contests. AND their emails make me laugh out loud while at work!
It is not only awesome content, but CRAZY sweet marketing.
I am not affiliated with them, but I will say the main reason I purchased from them was that their site made me laugh.

Does anybody have or know of any examples of a site that maybe a bit boring to the masses but has figured out a way to develop interesting content in order to boost their inbound traffic from said masses?
I guess what I'm saying is that it is easy to recommend "build interesting content" but if, for example, I am marketing a store that sells pillows and blankets how am I going to get people to share that URL on Facebook?

The higher the quality of content the easier the linkbuilding.
Having content that, in addition to being high quality, is of very high interest can also be important.
If you have that type of content on your site and one of your visitors shares it on facebook (or another sharing site) that can start a flood of traffic to your site.

Egol is correct - content is king!
Depending on your site/business, a good way to get links or, just as good in my opinion, social mentions is to be active on social media with your great content - "Hey guys! Come check out our new article on the 10 best time saving tips on our website domain.com!"
Link building can be tough work, but keep at it.

The most effective advice is site specific. If you have a lot of great content you can attract links. If you don't have a lot of great content then you have to connive links. The type of content and the topic area also are variables that change the linkbuilding methods.

We were advised by out outsourced link removal vendor not to build any links while they are removing links pointing to our site. Links I am not Building?
Hi All, I check webmaster multiple times on a daily basis, and I noticed some links that I have not worked on and look a bit spammy, is it possible for people to purposely pont bad links in my direction? If that is the case is there a way for me to remove them myself? Also the number of total backlinks are very different in Webmaster and my Open Site Explorer, is this normal? Thanks again !

Why do my inbound links hardly ever show up?
I'm sure this question has been asked before but I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. Basically, I'm trying to understand why the inbound links I've created hardly ever show up in Webmaster Tools or Open Site Explorer, when other (relatively new) sites have hundreds of them. For example, I'm building a small niche site for which I have written all original content; some product reviews, some more general articles. Then I have rewritten the articles and posted them on popular Web2.0 sites to find human traffic as well as building authority through the links. I've linked some of the smaller sites together to form a wheel for additional authority. I've pinged the off-site articles and some of them have been indexed but the links don't show up in, even after a couple of months. I've checked the articles for duplication, just in case, and they're all 80-90% unique, or more. I've done similar things for other small sites and the links sometimes show up, but it takes 4-6 months which seems ridiculous. It's frustrating when I'm doing everything by the book (as far as I'm aware) and getting nowhere in the SERP's, while other sites have hundreds of links from spam blogs with poor quality, unrelated content and are sitting on page 1. I've also bookmarked the off-site articles and submitted the RSS feed where appropriate. My intention was to continue adding content on and off site but it just seems pointless if it never has any value. I just don't know what else I'm supposed to do. Hello all ! I would love some opinions about one Link Building technical aspect from SEOs, link builders ... How important is the number of outgoing links on the page you have the opportunity to place a link ? (from a scale of 1-10 / what about where dose this factor fits overall with your check list , as important to consider as far as link building) Would you place a link on a page with 200+ outgoing external links if the page is ok (not involved in selling links, all links are related with the subject, target page, anchor text etc) or you would go with a link on a 10-15 links per page but not that 'powerful' and not that related (not spammy but more general on the subject that can contain links to some other non related resources). Eg: Option 1: www.whatever-name.com/links.html the entire domain is about x. It has 250 links in that page (in the links.html) all links on the links.html pages are somehow related / resources with x. Your link can be placed with an anchor text related with x that will target a page on your site related with x. Domain page rank : 6 (as a general indicator), Page PR, the links.html one, PR: 2 Option 2: www.some-other-name.com/x-is-so-great the entire domain is NOT about x, just the page. It has 5..10 links in that page (external links more or less related with x - but not spammy) Your link can be placed with an anchor text related with x that will target a page on your site related with x. Domain page rank : 3 (as a general indicator), Page PR, the links.html one, PR: 1 What's your best option ? Thanks !

Do you spend much time on the phone when link building?
When it comes to link building for a client how important is it to get on the phone when chasing links from other sites? Would you say this done all the time, half the time, not at all? Is this the SEO experts responsibility or the clients? Update: Really hoping to get an idea of how important this is to acheive good SEO results. Any chance the SEOMoz employees have any answers here?
