Where is the point of diminishing returns for silos and keyword subdirectories?

And as a follow-up, is that point far enough out to justify making a site's folder structure different from its navigation structure?
I'll give an example. Say I was to do SEO for a hypothetical (I hope) someconstructioncompany.com, and the the menus/submenus were laid out as
- About Us
- ---- Our company
- ---- Our staff
- ---- Locations
- -------- Albany (default path would be .com/about-us/locations/albany-ny.html)
- -------- Miami
- -------- Liverpool
- Services
- ---- Kitchen remodeling (default path would be .com/services/kitchen-remodeling.html)
- ---- Above ground pools
- ---- Green building
- Photo galleries
- ---- Kitchen photos (default path would be .com/photo-gallery/kitchen-photos.html)
- ---- Pool photos
- ---- Green building photos
Would there be any benefit (and if so, enough of a benefit to outweigh the additional overhead of keeping track of a separate structure) to having the menus set that way, but the actual files siloed as stuff like
- someconstructioncompany.com/kitchen-remodeling/kitchen-renovation-services.html
- someconstructioncompany.com/kitchen-remodeling/custom-kitchen-photo-gallery.html
- someconstructioncompany.com/above-ground-pools/above-ground-pool-photos.html
- someconstructioncompany.com/albany-ny/green-building-custom-home-remodeling-contractor-albany.html
Would that separation of navigation structure and file structure be beneficial or would that time/effort setting it up be better spent elsewhere?

I understand why you're asking this, as site architecture is very important in passing the link equity/authority of pages and the domain throughout the site.
However, unless your site is navigated differently as well, a change in URL structure like the one you have given won't make much of an SEO difference if the page still takes the same amount of clicks through the site navigation.
It may have some effect for the user - you may want to use the second structure if you believe it gives the user a more accurate URL to read (I'm undecided on this).
It could also have some slight positive SEO effect - it looks as though you'll be getting the targeted keywords in the URL. There is evidence to suggest a very slight correlation with keywords in URLs and higher rankings, but it's certainly not a huge influence. I'd be more inclined to optimise for the user, rather than the search engines, when it comes to URL structure.
You'll notice as well that the SEOMoz report for your site recommends URLs with less than 75 characters and definitely less than 200. Not sure if there is any SEO to this, but certainly from a user perspective being concise can help.
Going back to site architecture, I'm reminded of this great SEOMoz blog post - it summarises that your important pages should never be more than 3 clicks away, for a user or a search engine. This is more about navigation structure than file/URL appearance, but worth reading and noting.
If you wish to change to URL appearance, I'd always bear in mind what looks best for your user rather than the search engine. Provided that the page can be reached in the sitemap and in 3 clicks or less, your site architecture will be fine. Separating the consistency between the architecture and URL appearance is fine and won't negatively effect you, but I'd always do it for the user in mind.

Keyword stuffing in document
Hi, I recieve a grade A on my on page grader, however i get "Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Document" - now on my page, i am not sure if its avoidable. It says this is highly important, but here is the issue. My website specialises in a particular product, so we have many variations of that product, different fabrics, styles, trimmings etc, so we have over 50 URLS pertaining to different variations of that "keyword" it's not in a spammy way, its actually done as customers are searching for it that way. Let's say for example scarves. Cotton Scarves, Viscose Scarves, Polyester Scarves, Pom Pom Scarves, etc etc So on my homepage even if i reduce the text mentions of "scarves" the urls still have 50 or so with it as the title, and in the URL. So how do i avoid this form of "keyword Stuffing" ?

Is irrelevant backlinks real? And does anchor text affect all keywords?
I ask because I see many of my competitors with irrelevant backlinks still ranking at the top, despite what SEO say about it. I have a Web Design business, most of my competitors have their backlinks from sites they built ie "website by _____" and thats how they rank at the top. Should I keep getting backlinks from my clients (with permission)? Also does anchor text on backlinks affect all keywords in your website? Example is if you provide multi services ie plastering and decorating. You have 100 links pointing to your site with anchor text of "plastering". Technically your site still has 100 backlinks, will that also help boost the onsite optimisation for the keyword "decorating"?

Keyword rich internal linking - problem?
Had an interesting situation today.. We write daily news articles on our site. In each article we link out to two sources that we are writing about (credible sources) and we do one or two internal links. For example.. 'Today McDonald's have announced that they are purchasing more blue widgets in order to increase their opportunity to appeal to a larger market.' So in that sentence you can see one outbound link and one inbound to blue widgets on our site. I got an email today from a large company who we have written an article about in the industry and they have asked me to remove the link to their site.. I actually asked them why and this was their response. 'We're concerned because of the number of keyword-rich internal links in the article, and are worried that being included alongside them might be misinterpreted by Google as an artificial link.' Fristly, do they really have anything to be worried about?.. but more importantly, with our internal linking, do we have anything to be worried about?.

One word Keywords
Hey as you know that as a seo we are, we always optimize keywords which are at least 2 words, and lets say I'm trying to optimize a page for terms like "man clothing, man london clothing, man great collection, man stylus collection" and as you can guess I optimize this pages for this keywords by inputting them into title heading tags and body.

So my question is , what if google takes "man" phrase from my 2 words keywords, and pretend as a my keyword. (I mean what if google thinks my keywords is man because as you can see in all of the keywords "man" is in all of them.)
And what if Google thinks the density of "man" probably would be %20 which is astronomic number.? Sorry for my bad english.0 -
Keyword Strategy for outside of the US
I posted a similar question a while go, so I will attempt to articulate my question a little better.... I am the owner of an E-Commerce site that operates in Canada. I have been brainstorming ways to find opportunities and niches for Canadian online shoppers in an industry that is dominated by corporate American E-commerce sites. I saw another Canadian e-commerce site try to combat this issue, and I wanted to get some advice on whether this strategy is sound. Here is an example. Well.ca is a large e-commerce site in Canada. They take a competitive product like a "Tide Lundry Detergent" and include local and intent terms in their page titles. For example "Buy TideLaundry Detergent from Canada at Well.ca - Free Shipping". If a Canadian shopper searches for "Tide Laundry Detergent", they are going to find results for amazon.com, ebay.com, Tide's website, etc.. I would imagine that Canadian shoppers would start to add terms such as Canada, Buy, or online to try to find Canadian sellers. If that is the case, then Well.ca ranks and arguably serves the customer with those intentions much better. I guess my question is, if the dominant search terms in my industry are polluted with irrelevant or American companies (even in Canada), is this form of localization a good idea? The terms don't seem to be searched much according to any keyword research tool I've used, but I know that I add "canada" to my search terms in order to find Canadian results? Thoughts?

Page URL keywords
Hello everybody, I've read that it's important to put your keywords at the front of your page title, meta tag etc, but my question is about the page url. Say my target keywords are exotic, soap, natural, and organic. Will placing the keywords further behind the URL address affect the SEO ranking? If that's the case what's the first n number of words Google considers? For example, www.splendidshop.com/gift-set-organic-soap vs www.splendidshop.com/organic-soap-gift-set Will the first be any less effective than the second one simply because the keywords are placed behind?

Keyword as domain- worth buying it?
Hi, I just noticed that a top keyword for our industry is available as a domain, but for around $2,500.00 USD. For example, www.chicagoplumber.com. If we already have a pretty well established online identity as, let's say, www.chicagopipes.com, would it be worth buying the new domain and making it our primary? Thanks for your feedback! -Will
