What if an old site goes into PENDINGDELETE status
-
Hi,
I have an old domain which accidentally was set as PENDINGDELETE by the registry. It's now not resolving to any ip address any more.
Actually I was relocating from the old domain to a new domain. Just one month before it become PENDINGDELETE, I have submitted a "Chang of Address" in Google Webmasters Tools as well as setup the web server to 301 redirect all urls on old domain to the new domain.
I have some sub-questions for this case:
1. What will happen to the effectiveness of the "Change of Address" in Google Webmasters Tool after old domain is dropped. As a domain is deleted, I have no way to maintain the verified ownership of the it in case Google asks me to reverify.
2. Suppose during last month before it's deleted, Googlebot had crawled 50% of urls on old domains, detected the 301 redirects and save them to its index. When Googlebot crawls those 50% urls again after the old domain is deleted, as those urls are not resolving to any web server, will Googlebot retain the last 301 redirects or drop the 301 redirects as well?
3. After a domain is deleted, how soon will Google purge urls on old domain from its index?
Thank you.
Best regards
Jack Zhao

When a domain goes into pending delete status it's DNS have been usually deactivated for a while, generally since the domain entered it's redemption grace period (depending on the domain extension and the registrar).
It usually takes some time for a 301 to 'settle', so I would renew the old domain and keep it redirected for a while, here you'll find a compendium of data on the subject.
The thing is, if the domain has gone into pending delete status, the domain will be deleted soon (5 day period) and you won't be able to renew it. You could use a back order service to try and snatch it, or you could try to do it by hand if the domain is not valuable.
1- When the domain expires (probably sooner), you will loose access to the domain hence the address change will stop working, you'll see that in Webmaster Tools.
2- The pages will cease to exist and so will the redirections, the advise is to keep control of the old domain for at least 180 days.
3- It depends on several factors, like the amount of indexed pages, the amount of links pointing to them, crawling rate, etc. but for an average site it usually takes a couple of months for it to completely disappear from the index (can be a lot faster though).

Those are all good questions and I'm hoping we get some good answers. In the meantime, I believe you can still renew your domain if it is pending delete. Have you tried renewing it at this point so that you can maintain the redirects?

Tracing Redirects to a Site
I wonder if anyone has used any tools where you can trace the redirects pointing to a site? I know there are a number of tools out there that can be used to check where a URL redirects to, but I was wondering if anyone has used a tool where I could trace all redirects with the final URL? I am using this for competitor research so I don't have access to Analytics or Webmaster Tools.

Way to spider Wordpress site
I have an old Wordpress site and I want to move it to a new server and take it off Wordpress (too many hacks). I am trying to spider the site so as to get static, non-Wordpress, pages. I am having trouble doing this. When I spider the site, it changes the URLs. For instance, if the URL is www.domain.com/page/ the URL I get out of the spider is /page/index.html And those are not the URLs in the search engine indices. There are about 2000 pages on this site, so it is not feasible to set up 301 redirects. I tried using these spidering programs: WinHTTack Website Copier and PageNest Does anyone know of another method of turning a Wordpress site into a non Wordpress site?

New Website, New URL, New Content - What do we do with the old site? Are 301's the only option?
We've just built a new site for a client. They were adamant on changing the url. The new site is entirely new content, however the subject mater is the same. Some pages are even titled very similarly. Is is advisable to keep the old site running, and link it to the new site? Permanently, or temporarily? Do we simply place redirects from the old site the new? Old site was 30 pages, new site is 80 pages. So redirects won't be available to all the new pages. It seems a shame to trash the old site, it is getting some good traffic, and the content - although outdated is unique and of a high quality. Old url is 4+ yrs old, the new url is new. Some enlightened opinions would be greatly welcomed. Thanks

What happens if my site was down for 10 hours?
Hello, We have a fairly large site. Due to an attack it was taken down for about 10 hours. We have finally been able to resolve the security issues, restore the code and put everything back online. Now, we are a little bit worried about what GoogleBot will think of us. We have been working hard during the past months to get a better SEO. Should we be worried?

Merging two sites into one
I have two websites, www.joecline.com and www.affinityproperties.com. Originally, I wanted joecline.com to be focused on west austin only. I now realize that I only have time to really handle the promotion of one site. I'm wondering SEOwise, which url would be better to keep. I would consolidate all content on one site and 301 the migrated site to the new URLs in the domain which I would keep. Any ideas would be great. Thanks Joe
