My 404 page is showing a 4xx error. How can that be fixed?
-
My actual 404 page is giving a 4xx error.
The page address is http://www.ecowindchimes.com/v/404.aspIt loads fine... it is the page all 404's are directed to. Why is it showing a 404 error. The page works.
How can this be fixed?

I think what you're seeing here is intentional behaviour, Stephen. It's Volusion's hack for working around the fact their system doesn't handle 404's "correctly".
Bottom line, when you see these, you still need to fix the issue with whatever URL was being sent to the 404 page, but don't worry that the 404 page itself seems to be "not found" according to its status code.
Here's an explanation for "why" this is happening, if you're interested:
Normally, when a user enters a URL that doesn't exist, the server sends back a 404 error header. In addition, the server's settings know that when sending back a 404 status because there's no such page, they should also show the server error page directly.
For a number of reasons, Volusion can't do this, so instead, they've instituted a catch-all redirect so visitors to non-existent pages get a 301-redirect to a regular website page that has been faked to look like a 404 page. Because that 404-looking page has been found and shown, it would normally have a 200 status, which means page found OK.
A little unorthodox, but OK so far as far as the user is concerned.
BUT! When a user hits a "page not found", the search engines want to get an actual 404 status error code back so they know not to index that non-existent URL. See the problem?
If the search engine gets a 200 response, it will assume that is the real page the visitor was trying to reach and will index the non-existent URL with the 404-ish looking content. Bad. So even though you - the user - can see the error page (200), Volusion has to give it a fake 404 status to give the search engines the correct information.
For a demonstration, go to this non-existent page http://www.cochranemusic.ca/oops You can see in your browser's URL bar that the page address is still http://www.cochranemusic.ca/oops even though the page itself shows the server error page content.
Now go to http://www.ecowindchimes.com/oops and notice that the URL in the address bar actually changes, because you've been forwarded to a page on your site called 404.asp. That's a real page on your website you're seeing that's been made to "look" like a server error page. Even though you've been redirected to a real (200) page, the server has to pretend it's a 404 status to mimic the correct behaviour.
Whew - that was confusing to try to explain, so let me know if it's still not clear.
Paul
P.S. To server admins: I know I've oversimplified the difference between a server's own 404 error page and an actual website page made to look like a 404. I do know the difference, but for the sake of keeping this explanation as straightforward as possible, I've glossed over it.

What is your opinion in the use of jquery for a continuous scroll type of page layout?
So, I'm in 2 minds about this; let me start with a bit of background info. Context
Web Design | | ChrisAshton
We have a new client who is in the final days of their new site design and were when they first contacted us. Their design essentially uses 5 pages, each with several pages worth of content on each, separated with the use of jquery. What this means is a user can click a menu item from a drop-down in the nav and be taken directly to that section of content like using internal anchor links as if it were a separate page, or they can click the top-level nav item and scroll through each "sub-page" without having to click other links. Vaguely similar to Google's "How Search Works" page if each sector of that page had it's own URL, only without the heavy design elements and slow load time. In this process, scrolling down to each new "sub-page" changes the URL in the address bar and is treated as a new page as far as referencing the page, adding page titles, meta descriptions, backlinks etc. From my research this also means search engines don't see the entire page, they see each sub-page as their own separate item like a normal site. My Reservations I'm worried about this for several reasons, the largest of them being that you're essentially presenting the user with something different to the search engines. The other big one being that I just don't know if search engines really can render this type of formatting correctly or if there's anything I need to look out for here. Since they're so close to launching their new site, I don't have time to set up a test environment and I'm not going to gamble with a new corporate website but they're also going to be very resistant to the advice of "start the design over, it's too dangerous". The Positives
For this client in particular, the design actually works very well. Each of these long pages is essentially about a different service they offer and the continuous scrolling through the "sub-pages" acts as almost a workflow through the process, covering each step in order. It also looks fantastic, loads quickly and has a very simple nav so the overall user experience is great. Since the majority of my focus in SEO is on UX, this is my confusion. Part of me thinks that obscuring the other content on these pages and only showing each individual "sub-page" to search engines is an obvious no-no, the other part of me feels that this kind of user experience and the reasonable prevalence of AJAX/Paralax etc means search engines should be more capable of understanding what's going on here. Can anyone possibly shed some light on this with either some further reading or first-hand experience?0 -
Page missing meta description some times a good thing?
Just courious to why http://moz.com/learn/seo does not appear to have the meta tag: name="description" content=""> Is this purposely done this way for some reason? Or has it become less important? Just curious.

Will changing product from Grouped to Simple on my magento category page affect my SEO?
Hi all, A category page on my site http://www.porcelainsuperstore.co.uk/wood-effect.html currently ranks number 3 on Google for the keyword "Wood Effect Tiles" We're currently reorganising some of our product and I would like to know if this is going to affect the SEO and ranking for the above page and keyword. The majority of products on that page are magento grouped products. I would like to change the page so that it displays only the different constituent simple products rather than the grouped products on the category page. My question is, will this have any impact on SEO? I intend on leaving all other data on the category page the same - so the metadata and the description/title etc. Any help/comments would be much appreciated! Ben

How to make sure category pages rank higher than product pages?
Hi, This question is E-Commerce related. We have product categories dividing products by color. Let's say we have the category 'blue toy cars' and a product called 'blue toy car racer', both of these could rank for the keyword 'blue toy car'. How do we make sure the category 'blue toy cars' ranks above the product 'blue toy car racer'? Or is the category page automatically ranked higher because of the higher page authority of that page? Increase in 404's
Hi, We recently did a website upgrade and as a result url structure changed. There is 140 404's in Google webmaster. Just wondering on best best practice. What should be done with pages that are defiantly not being used any more? For example we used to how .com/why-choose-us* this section is gone for Good - Should I redirect to closest page on site such as .com/about or noindex all together? We also had lots of pages that were on a similar topic but now have condensed these into one or two pages on the new site. Is it OK to 301redirect 10+ 404's to one page on the new site. These will only be redirected to closely related topics so from a user point of view the new presented content will be fine. (Is this bad from a search engine point of view as in pointing lots of old 404's to one particualr page on new site) Your input is welcomed. Thanks,

Number of links per page?
I'm confused by the number of links that we should put on a page. Our site has a high domain authority but SEOmoz tool and others, plus Google WMT suggests much much less than other sites have - look at Dailymail.co.uk or the Huff post site for example. our site is www.worldtravelguide.net and I'm thinking specifically about the /destinations and each continent like /europe Our site has thousands of pages, trying to create an effective internal linking structure with the limitation of 150 or so links is nearly impossible and ends up with too many navigational pages. We were hit hard by Panda (even though all our content is original, professionally written frequently updated) in favour of bigger brands and considering Google suggests that sites should be designed for users and not SEO these two ideals conflict. Does anyone have any data on what the link limit is? Any other tips or observations would be gratefully received. Thanks, John
