Canoncial tag for homepage?
-
I have a site that gets most of it's traffic from one keyword combination, but I've noticed lately that instead of sending people to the homepage, it's sending people to an internal page.
This isn't a problem, except for the fact that all the best link juice and domain authority has been directed at the homepage.
There's not a lot of content on the homepage, so is it worth setting up a canonical tag on the homepage for this internal page to ensure that the page authority/link juice helps to boost this page that is already being indexed for the keyword?
-
Yeah I'd say that Google is just preferring the internal page over the homepage... the content is more relevant, the keyword is in the url, etc.
-
Yeah the internal page has the keyword in the url - and it actually has more relevant content. So perhaps it's ok that that page is being ranked, it's just a shame that the homepage has the better page rank, so we're not getting as strong of a ranking as I think we would if the homepage were getting more of the internal links.
Is it a good idea to point internal links from other pages to the homepage instead, when the internal page really has the most relevant content just to try to get a better ranking? I'd say no, right?

Yeah, I tend to agree with Michael. Make sure this isn't an issue with your home-page. Google does seem to be preferring more targeted pages these days, though, and it can happen for a lot of reasons. This is an older post by Rand, but it's still very relevant:

Oh, I think you're asking for trouble if you do that.
Unless your home page is really badly targeted for that keyword, or the internal page has the keyword in the URL and your domain doesn't, or somehow you've built a ton of links to the internal page and NOT the homepage, this is really suspicious, and makes me think that Google might be levying a penalty against your home page.
If that's the case, the canonical tag runs the risk of transferring the penalty
First off, install Chartelligence in your Chrome browser, and then take a look at your Google Analytics to see when the traffic dropped for your home page, and from that, if that lines up with a particular iteration of Panda or Penguin.

Title Tags not Displaying in SERPs Correctly
We have two websites that are very similar. One is .co.nz and the other is a .com.au. I've noticed some of our page titles are displaying differently in SERPs even though the title tags are formatted the same:e.g. The title: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape Australia" shows as: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape Australia - MightyApe.com.au"It's showing with extra text "- MightyApe.com.au". Whereas the NZ result for the title "PC Games | at Mighty Ape NZ" is fine i.e. displays as: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape NZ"Does anyone who why this might be happening?P.S. It's odd that in the Australian results the site links don't show up even though the sites are structured the same.

Keyword at homepage
Hi there, this is the url of my homepage: http://www.sehaidoyamama.com/piensapiensa/ PiensaPiensa is not my keyword. I have selected a keyword to optimize the homepage. Does anyone know how to include the keyword in the url of the homepage? I tried to do it in the "pages" section of wordpress but I wasn't able to do it. The home page doesn't allow to change the url. Is it important to set up a keyowrd in the url of the homepage? Is it appropiate from the usability perspective? Thanks

Seomoz.org Category and Tags practice
Hello, I have been checking seomoz sourcecode and architecture these days in order to learn and to apply it in my site but I havent managed to find "tags" at all. Just the "Posts by Categories" on the right sidebar. Is this the only way you are categorising content? In this case, the only way spiders have to find your content is via these category archive pages and the general sitemap? Thanks!

Redirect a blog category page to the homepage?
Hi folks Following Penguin 1.1, I have a client site at number 5 for their primary keyword. (was creeping up page 2 with whitehat link building and tight on-site SEO.) However now the page ranking at No. 5 is for a blog category archive. What do people think the quickest / safest way to get this ranking directed back to the homepage is? Many thanks Simon

Canonical tag help
Hi, We have a product which is marketed by affiliates . Affiliates send referrals to our sale page by adding their affiliate IDs to our product page like http://www.mysite.com/products.php?ref= 12345. We want to avoid the content duplication impression to Google by using canonical tags but we are not clear about its use. Should we use it on http://www.mysite.com/products.php ( actual page) or we should create temporary pages for each referral id i.e http://www.mysite.com/products.php?ref= 12345 and then add canonical tags to all those pages linking to proper page i.e http://www.mysite.com/products.php ? Thanks, shaz

2 canonical tags on the same page
When using the 'on-page optimizer' tool, I continue to get the same recommendation on every page to only use 1 canonical tag on the page. I'm not sure why there are 2 tags on each page in the first place so I don't know how to remove the one that's not needed. Our site is on a WP blog and a sample page to view the source code would be: http://www.shilohstreet.com/blog/is-flipping-houses-smart-real-estate-investing.html Does anyone know why this is happening, how to fix it and/or if I should even be concerned with it? Thanks!

Title Tag Targeting Two Geographic Modifiers
How would you suggest writing a homepage title tag which needs to target both state and city? We are targeting these two phrases: Lincoln personal injury lawyer

Nebraska personal injury lawyer Any thoughts on how you'd write the title tag? I know targeting Nebraska will be challenging but it's what the higher ups want to do. Would you suggest: Lincoln Nebraska Personal Injury Lawyer ?0 -
How many meta tags are appropriate?
How many meta tags are appropriate? There is a page that ranks above me that has many more than I do. It has (I have removed the content of each to give a description of the type of content): I only use meta tags for keywords and description, robots. Should I have more? Thanks.
