Anyone using Yahoo Small Business? Not sure if SEOmoz works with YahooSB
-
I am not sure if SEOmoz is compatible with Yahoo Small Business. The crawl states that the title page is too long for over a hundred titles, but they are not. SEOmoz is taking the title page and the parent or catagory page and grouping together.
Please only respond if you work SEO for Yahoo Small Business accounts. Would be glad to take discussion thread off line or show the SEOmoz report.

Hey Mike
It's not so much a case of the titles not 'being indexed' or read but more to do with how they display in the search engine result pages (SERPs).
If your page is long, then the title is going to be cut off. Also, the general goal is to have your keywords at the beginning of the title to get the most bang for your buck.
Specifics depend on the site but it is nice to have the page title like the title of a book and consider your site as the author. Have it short, punchy but descriptive and also state the author so:

is better than
Do better in the search engines with small business SEO packag..
Your title has one job to do:
describe the page in a way that search engines and users can understand. So, if the description of the page is done by Yahoo in a sub optimal way then yeah, it will hurt your ranking and it will negatively affect the amount of people that click on the link when it is displayed.

Hope that helps!

I found the problem. It is in the way an old template functions adding the section to the product and thus making them too long. It is not an SEOmoz or Yahoo issue it's in my template.
I have one question. While researching this I talked to two SEO "experts" who stated while the titles are too long to be indexed. The spiders still look at the first 70 characters and just do not look at the rest. What is your opinion? Do you think this hurts ranking or I should just be aware if there are key words past 70 characters it will not be read.

Hey Mike,
I took a look at your campaign and the pages that are getting flagged as having too long of a title and they are all accurate.
Without citing examples (for your privacy), if you actually pull up the pages mentioned and view the source of them, you'll find that the the title tags are actually as long as mentioned in the web app.
It may be that YahooSB is creating these title tags and inserting them into your page.
I hope that clears up those warnings for you.
Cheers,
Joel.

What does Mozcape actually do and what types of businesses use it?
I'm making an effort to use more of the Moz tools, but some I really don't understand...Mozcape would be chief on that list. What does it do exactly and for what purpose? I read the API Wiki, but it sounds to me a lot like Open Site Explorer...but complicated...so I assume I must be missing something or why build the thing? Also, do local businesses even use this or is this more for national e-commerce sites? Thanks, Ruben

Changing the way SEOmoz Detects Duplicate Content
Hey everyone, I wanted to highlight today's blog post in case you missed it. In short, we're using a different algorithm to detect duplicate pages. http://moz.com/blog/visualizing-duplicate-web-pages If you see a change in your crawl results and you haven't done anything, this is probably why. Here's more information taken directly from the post: 1. Fewer duplicate page errors: a general decrease in the number of reported duplicate page errors. However, it bears pointing out that: **We may still miss some near-duplicates. **Like the current heuristic, only a subset of the near-duplicate pages is reported. **Completely identical pages will still be reported. **Two pages that are completely identical will have the same simhash value, and thus a difference of zero as measured by the simhash heuristic. So, all completely identical pages will still be reported. 2. Speed, speed, speed: The simhash heuristic detects duplicates and near-duplicates approximately 30 times faster than the legacy fingerprints code. This means that soon, no crawl will spend more than a day working its way through post-crawl processing, which will facilitate significantly faster delivery of results for large crawls.

Confusion about how SEOMOZ crawler works...
So according to my SEOMOZ dashboard, I'm ranking between #3-4 for one of my keywords. My keyword is 'Boston Wedding Photographer'. My site is http://www.symbolphoto.com I show up in google places, true. But i was wanting to rank organically. Am i right in the assumption that Google Places and Google Organic are not the same thing? SEOMOZ claims 3,4th but not organically(Assuming they aren't the same thing) I get pretty good traffic right now being in Places, but i can't help but feel that organically ranking would bring more traffic. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated. TIA! -Brendan

Seomoz research tools question for inbound links
What is the best seomoz tool and or indicator within a tool for checking on a link (directory or article site) to evaluate whether or not you would actaully want a link from them? Any way to see if google penalizes them for there tactics or if that can hurt me by them linking to me or whatever? I am at the beginning of a link building mission, but want to ensure that I do it methodically and correctly as possible based on the combines wisdom of this community. Thanks for your help, Steven

Duplicate page error from SEOmoz
SEOmoz's Crawl Diagnostics is complaining about a duplicate page error. I'm trying to use a rel=canonical but maybe I'm not doing it right. This page is the original, definitive version of the content: https://www.borntosell.com/covered-call-newsletter/sent-2011-10-01 This page is an alias that points to it (each month the alias is changed to point to the then current issue): https://www.borntosell.com/covered-call-newsletter/latest-issue The alias page above contains this tag (which is also updated each month when a new issue comes out) in the section: Is that not correct? Is the https (vs http) messing something up? Thanks!

SEOMoz only crawling 5 pages of my website
Hello, I've added a new website to my SEOmoz campaign tool. It only crawls 5 pages of the site. I know the site has way more pages then this and also has a blog. Google shows at least 1000 results indexed. Am I doing something wrong? Could it be that the site is preventing a proper crawl? Thanks Bill
