Question about URLs
-
Hello!
I have a client that wants to upload an URL like this:
www.example.com/keyword/page-name.html
The main problem is that www.example.com/keyword/ doesn't exist and gives a 404 error so I'd prefer not doing that......
What do you think about this? And if the client wants to go ahead, is there any solution? A 301 to the final page would help?
Thank you in advance!
-
Yes, you are right. Thank you Ryan!

This is where I would suggest you take a step back and consider both sides.
From your side, you have a valid concern about the user experience. From the client's side, he wants to rank better.
Use your SEO knowledge and experience to help him understand the options. Otherwise I would ask, what is your involvement with the site? If you are the SEO then you should be making these decisions, not the client. If the client is making these suggestions then it seems likely he is not confident in your abilities or he feels he has superior knowledge on this topic. Either way is not a good foundation for a client relationship.

Thank you Ryan,
The main problem is that (following my example) www.example.com/keyword/ doesn't exist. They just want one keywords, as it were a category.
-
It seems the client desires to stuff keywords into their URL which is not a best practice. The recommended solution would be to naturally use the keyword in the URL. If that cannot happen, drop it.
Let's assume you are selling blenders and the product is the Goldstar 1000. Some possibilities:
If you only offer the one product, you can add the keyword to the product name. www.example.com/goldstar-1000-blender.
If you strongly desire the format /blender/goldstar-1000 then create a quality /blender page with content that is sincerely helpful to users.

301 and the base URL
Hi, please bear with me as I'm pretty new to all this! I've my base URL but obviously want to add keywords to it for seo purposes. Should I redirect from the base URL to the URL with the keywords appended? So my landing page goes from say www.moz.com to www.moz.com/keywords-here. If I do that, should I replicate all the meta data (descriptions etc) on the original landing page? Or does it not matter? Thanks, Nick

Value of URL Changes
Hi Guys, I have a question. Each product listed on my webstie has product number like /product.php?id=3624. After I spent many hours with MOZ, I figured out that this approach is wrong and I should use the product name as URL to achieve better SEO performance. Now I am planing to change the URL generating algoritm but should I do it for existing products. Some of them have already been linked to external websites. I am thinking to create mirror URLs but this may cause rather damage on my website. Do you know what is the right answer? Best, Tony

Display URL changed for Organic Regional Searches?
Hey. We currently have a US version of the site (/us) which is displaying in US Google Search. However the /us domain is also showing for our co.uk Google searches. Is there a way I can ensure the /us is only displayed for US searches? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated 🙂

URL Structure Category Pages -Current Moz Friday-
Hello,
On-Page Optimization | | _Heiko_
regarding #15 of the last moz friday I have a question: http://moz.com/blog/15-seo-best-practices-for-structuring-urls What would you prefer if the lenght of the URL will be still under 60 characters and you have an example like this: Let's call it a specific page in a category. As I like the old shoe examples: You have a page about red shoes in your shoe category. Which URL would you prefer: a) www.mydomain.com/shoes/red-shoe b) www.mydomain.com/shoes/red Personally I would prefer a) or would you already consider this as spammy? My real example is not that trivial like the shoe example and the categories will be in plural and the specific pages always in singular (like in the example shoes vs shoe). c) would be to put it independently from the side structure on www.mydomain.com/red-shoe - but personally I have the experience that a) or b) will help the rankings of the category page if you have the specific pages in the same subfolder. What's your opinion on this?1 -
How important are clean URLs?
Just wanting to understand the importance of clean URLs in regards to SEO effectiveness. Currently, we have URLs for a site that reads as follows: http://www.interhampers.com.au/c/90/Corporate Gift Hampers Should we look into modifying this so that the URL does not have % or figures?

Google Index/Cashe questions
I have 15k+ pages. I have 4.5k pages indexed. What relation is the google cashe to indexing pages? My site gets cashed every two days. The competition in my SERP goes 2-3weeks to get cashed. What does this indicate? Is your cashe date your last google crawl? How can I get google to crawl my site? Is there a way I can get google to crawl my site starting from an internal page. This way I could set up a better linking structure that would benefit from doing activities that get that page indexed to help get my site indexed more thoroughly...
