302 Redirect of www. version of a site - Pros/Cons
-
Hi,
I am considering making the 301 redirect from the domain to a 302 temporary redirect.
Currently if a user lands on "www" version of the site, they are redirected to the non "www" version. But after the redirect, they will land on an external webpage (so if a user lands on the "www" version, they are redirected to a different website, not related to my domain).
Reason I'm considering this is because I have received a large number of spammy backlinks on the "www" version of the site (negative seo). So I'm hoping that the temporary redirect will help me recover.
Your thoughts on this:
1. Is this the best way to do a 302 redirect (redirecting the www version to an external domain)?
2. Will the redirect help the main domain recover, considering all spammy backlinks are pointing to the www version?
3. What are the pros/cons, if any?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Howard

Just to clarify, let me be more specific about what I initially planned to do:
Let's say my current website is at: example.com. Rel canonical is set so that if a user lands on www.example.com, they're redirect to the non www version.
For some reason, the negative seo targeted the www.example.com instead of the main url. So I'm thinking since all the bad links are pointing to the www version, redirecting that to somewhere else may help.
What you say makes sense, that google can detect that both versions are from the same domain.
I didn't see any major drops from the penguin last night. The main drop started middle of March and continued through April. This seems to have been an algo penalty vs. manual penalty as I didn't receive a warning.
The entire homepage wouldn't redirect, just the www domain. I doubt anyone would be affected by this since the rel canonical is set to the non www.
I think I agree with Chris on this and just wait it out and see if the disavow request goes anywhere.

I agree with Chris that changing the redirect to a 302 redirect is unlikely to have the desired impact. These days Google is pretty good about awarding credit for homepage links, even if the configuration isn't ideal (i.e. there is both a non-www and a www that resolves.) If they award credit for such non-ideal configurations, they probably also transfer the negative stuff.
Let me ask, though: are you sure that you're suffering from a link-based penalty caused by negative SEO? Did you receive a warning in Webmaster Tools, or did you see traffic drop on the date of a Penguin refresh?
I'm also a little confused about your configuration. You said, "after the redirect, they will land on an external webpage". If I understand you, you're saying your homepage redirects people to a different domain? If so, that really sounds like a sneaky redirect at worst, or a doorway page at best. Google doesn't want to send people to your domain if you suddenly redirect users to a new domain with something "not related to your domain."
-
Basically, though, I wouldn't count on using any redirects to get you around a penguin penalty or shorten its duration. Typically, for those who get out of penguin, it takes a lot of work on dealing with the links combined with a lot of work on content--so much so, that it seems to take a total commitment to the domain to make it happen.
It sounds like you may be preparing for the worst but that you haven't been impacted yet. If that's the case, I'd just wait it out, at this point, and if you get hit, make a commitment to a domain and stick with it.
-
Thanks Chris. Thankfully I wouldn't lose all the traffic since most links are pointing to the non www url. This would only be a temporary redirect until I clean up the bad links but I thought doing the 302 redirect before the penguin may give me a chance to clean up those links while not being completely affected by them.

Sounds like that will likely get what traffic you have currently going to www over to the new domain but I don't think it's going to help you recover in any way. You're either going to have to work hard at eliminating the links to the www site and/or work hard to build up authority for the new domain. If you feel reviving the www site is out of the question, this could be the way to go as I haven't heard of anyone speaking of repercussions from 302ing visitors from one domain to another due to Penguin.

[Very Urgent] More 100 "/search/adult-site-keywords" Crawl errors under Search Console
I just opened my G Search Console and was shocked to see more than 150 Not Found errors under Crawl errors. Mine is a Wordpress site (it's consistently updated too): Here's how they show up: Example 1: URL: www.example.com/search/adult-site-keyword/page2.html/feed/rss2 Linked From: http://an-adult-image-hosting.com/search/adult-site-keyword/page2.html Example 2 (this surprised me the most when I looked at the linked from data): URL: www.example.com/search/adult-site-keyword-2.html/page/3/ Linked From: www.example.com/search/adult-site-keyword-2.html/page/2/ (this is showing as if it's from our own site) http://a-spammy-adult-site.com/search/adult-site-keyword-2.html Example 3: URL: www.example.com/search/adult-site-keyword-3.html Linked From: http://an-adult-image-hosting.com/search/adult-site-keyword-3.html How do I address this issue?

HELP!!! Steep Drop in Organic Traffic Starting 11/1/16
Starting November 1st, organic web traffic from Google dropped from an average of about 60 visits a day to about 5 per day. So we are more than 90% off!!!! At the end of September, we modified the header of the site to simplify it. We also added a snippet of code to each page to enable Zoho "Sales IQ" to work. Sales IQ enables us to track visitors and engage in chat sessions with them. Apart from that no changes have been made from the site. Any ideas as to what could have caused this drop in traffic? Was there a Google update at that time that could have caused the drop? Or could the recent site changes have caused this? I have attached a Google Webmasters Tool report showing the drop in traffic. I would very much appreciate some insight into this, as all organic traffic to our site has ceased. Thanks,

Links to www vs non-www
I was having speed issues when I ran a test under Google Page Speed test and, as a result, switched to using Google Page Speed Service. This meant I had to switch my site from the non-www to the www. Since the switch my page is running faster but my ranking has dropped. What I'm trying to find out is the drop due to all of my previous links going to the non-www or is it because of the site being considered new and is more of a temporary issue. If it is a link issue I will contact everyone I can to see who will update the site address. Thanks everyone!

Is 301 redirecting your index page to the root '/' safe to do or do you end up in an endless loop?
Hi I need to tidy up my home page a little, I have some links to our index.html page but I just want them to go to the root '/' so I thought I could 301 redirect it. However is this safe to do? I'm getting duplicate page notifications in my analytic reportings tools about the home page and need a quick way to fix this issue. Many thanks in advance David

Using a 302 re-direct from http://www to https://www to secure customer data
My website sends Customers from a http://www.mysite.com/features page to a https://www.mysite.com/register page which is an account sign-up form using a 302 re-direct. Any page that collects customer data has an authenticated SSL certificate to protect any data on the site. Is this 302 the most appropriate way of doing this as the weekly crawl picks it up as being bad practise? Is there a better alternative?

Www. or not?
Hi, I am pretty new to SEO. I know I have made so many mistakes and I am trying to learn now here on SEOmoz. At this moment, I am trying to find the answer to a situation that puzzles me. Since English is not my native language, I will do my best to be clear. I hope that a seasoned SEO expert out there can help me with this. I have a website (http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com) that in the very beginning I optimized for the URL http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com. I was even able to list this URL into the DMOZ directory. The problem is that after a while the web hosting company I use - I don't know why yet - decided to make my site available as http://pokeronlineitalia.com. This means that if a person types in http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com, she gets redirected to http://pokeronlineitalia.com (the traditional URL without the "www"). Since when I started the site I was even more clueless than I am now about SEO, I thought that that would not make any difference. Even the guy at the web hosting company told me that that would be ok in terms of SEO. I thought that that was the case and closed an eye. The fact is that now I am using several tools to measure the strength of my site in the eyes of the search engines and noticed that http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com seems stronger. Using a the tool I cannot mention, I compared the two URL and found out this: The total number of unique domains with backlinks pointing to a specific page is: 137 for the site WITHOUT the "www" and 2,210 for the site WITH the "www" The total number of links pointing to a specific URL is: 864 for the site WITHOUT the "www"; and 61,871 for the site WITH the "www" The number of domain backlinks is: 66,928 for the site WITHOUT the "www"; and 61,892 for the site WITH the "www" Moreover, as I have said, http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com is listed in DMOZ while the site without the "www" is not. My questions are the following: Is the site WITH the "www" in the URL stronger than the site WITHOUT the "www"? If so, can the guys at the web hosting company fix the issue and make sure that a person can go straight to http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com without being redirected to the site without the "www"? Finally, if the issue gets fixed, will the site with the "www" be indexed normally by the search engines? I have noticed that pages in the site with the "www" do not get indexed. Is it bad in the eyes of the search engines to go back to http://www.pokeronlineitalia.com? What would you do? I would really appreciate the opinion of an expert on this issue. Thank you for reading such incredibly long question. All the best, Mark

How do you prevent the mobile site becoming a duplicate of the full browser site?
We have a larger site with 100k+ pages, we need to create a mobile site which gets indexed in the mobile engines but I am afraid that google bot will consider these pages duplicates of the normal site pages. I know I can block it on the robots.txt but I still need it to be indexed for mobile search engines and I think google has a mobile crawler as well. Feel free to give me any other tips that I should follow while trying to optimize the mobile version. Any help would be appreciated 🙂

Questions about turning my wordpress site into an ecommerce site. Experience needed.
I have a wordpress site that is about a product that is now getting some great traffic. Right now It has affiliate stuff on it. I want to sell my own product so I will be turning this wordpress site into an ecommerce site. I want to redesign it so I am not looking for simple plugins to just add a cart. The part I am really confused about is what to do with my posts and categories? How does that work when turning this site into an ecommerce site? Lets say the site is "hats for adults" My post pages are things like "funny hats for adults", "hats for adult men" etc etc. Would I turn these posts pages into like category pages that have a category of products. Or should I create real categories and have my developer turn those into the ecommerce category pages and then redirect my posts to those categories? Maybe I don't even know what I am talking about. Is this even making sense? This is a small site (5posts and 1 category) and most of the traffic will come from the homepage keywords anyways.
