Why do some sites perform great but show no data on the tool bar?
-
Hey everyone,
Been a paid member for 3 days and this is my first time posting
I have a quick question about competitive analysis with the MozBar. I do not want to point out the exact website (unless that is something cool to do on this forum), but there is a site ranking for a single keyword in the local 7 pack in slot one, which is also slot one for the SERP entirely. When I go to look at the page in more detail, the MozBar is showing no DA, PA, anything at all, and the Open Site Explorer is showing no links internal or external.
I know that the page has to have at least some of these elements populated in order to be ranking for a term this competitive, so why is the bar not showing anything? The bar works GREAT on other sites below this one.
Thanks for any help!

Thank you to both of you! I am going to emphasize my efforts on citations for the moment. It is great to have people on here willing to help relatively new people like myself.

This is my favorite question on the forum, I think.
Ok, so let's start from the beginning: I wrote a post on why Moz metrics may not show everything.
The gist of it is simple: there are a lot of factors in SEO and you're considering only a few.
For instance, I can rank a site on the 7-pack (as your example) without building a single link. It's done through citations, which are sites with your business name, address, phone number, and website address together. The link doesn't have to be active but if you confirm with Google Places, build a few quality citations - for some keywords that's enough and you can rank that way. I took someone from "Average Position: 300" in Google Analytics to page 1 for their main keyword in less than 7 days this way.
Second, it may not be their only site or their first site. If I build 10,000 links to example.com and then I close example and open example1.com and 301 redirect example.com to example1.com, Moz will show blank metrics but I will get a lot of the "ranking power" of that previous site.
Finally, you can't see all the links. Moz, Majestic, Ahrefs, SEO SpyGlass, Webmasters Tools, Google search - they all return different results. Moz has a particular type of result they return and a particular type they miss (or skip) every single time. I can build 2500 powerful links to your site and purposely not let a single one be picked up by Moz. I just know which sites Google likes that Moz doesn't.
Make sense? Lots of reasons. They could be killing it with basically a handful of links from a powerful site. They could be doing everything right on-site and have a few citations... there are always sites Google seems to pass through to test and see if they get clicks. These spots are practically "reserved" for results that don't make sense if all you do is look at the numbers.
(Three sites in the top 10 for "Viagra" have an extremely low PA/DA (1). I would suggest 301s are in place there.)

I am not sure what you are seeing or the conditions but I have noticed that sometimes when cdn's are used you will actually be sitting on the subdomain or another domain all together when you click on the page.
Some caches can make the same thing happen sometimes.
Make sure you are sitting on the actual page when it pulls up.
As far as the opensite not showing any links, if you copy n paste from the address bar and have any variation of the page, it will not read correct.
Make sure you have your actual desired url, is my advice as SEO juice will follow the canonical meta but the tools will not.
That is all I can think of anyways.

Domain and urls aren't showing up in Google search
Hi, Moz community, I hope you are staying safe, I have been trying to search our website in Google by using the whole domain name, but it's not showing up. For example: https://www.example.com/

https://www.example.com/inner-page.html
Or if search brand name: Example, doesn't come up But when I try example.com, it comes up along with other pages. Neither the inner pages are being come up in the search nor the home page with https://www.example.com. I have checked with Site:example.com, it is showing all the pages, but it is weird on the other hand that it is not visible in the search, what could be the reason? Any tool to check it? I thought it was because of the latest core update from Google. But, there are many keywords in the rankings, so I am sure the website hasn't been impacted. I checked penalties or issues through many tools and even in the search console, everything is fine. Any help would be appreciated.1 -
Blocking Competitive Analysis Tools in robots.txt.... Worth it?
I've been considering blocking third party crawlers for a while – specifically those crawling my website for the sake of competitive analysis, such as SEMrush and Ahrefs. I'm familiar with how to do so, but when researching the question I found practically no one asking the same question. The guides I've found on what to put in your robots.txt make no mention of whether to block competitive analysis crawlers. Which makes me wonder whether this is a good idea after all. My chief concern here is rival sites going after the same search terms we target – one of our competitors in particular has an uncanny way of going after the same searches we are. I know blocking crawlers won't prevent competitors from watching our content, but it will make it slightly harder for them. Is there any major drawback I'm missing? Any big reason not to go ahead and block SEO analysis crawlers?

Is there a way to find sites that linked to my site during a certain time period? Say in the past 2 weeks or from March 1-March 15th ?

Why is my competitor's site ranking #1?
I'm about to work for a local business website that offers cleaning services and products. The keyword they want the most is ruled by a very odd site; My client's competitor's site has been around for 7 years. (Less than the average of it's competitors. Less than my client's) Has 1 backlink. Lower PA MR MT & DA than any other in the SERP. It's a 1 page site made with Flash. They do not have FB or Twitter accounts. So I thought maybe they were ranking so well because of their traffic. But neither my client, me or my coworkers have ever heard of this company. And yet, they are ranking #1. And the only thing I notice that might have helped is that the title of their page is the exact keyword and nothing more. Any ideas?

Why would a site with virtually no external links and low authority rank very high?
Hey there: I'm not sure anyone's going to be game to answer this but... I have designed, done on-page optimization for and done ongoing content marketing and linkbuilding for a local fitness site. The site is about nine months old and I am attempting to achieve rank for the keyword "personal trainers in philadelphia." We've made progress; having taken a new site from +100 to 19 in about four or five months worth of content creation and linkbuilding on a very modest budget. I'm not complaining. What has me confused though is that there are one or two sites that are ranking very high for this keyword string with considerably shoddier metrics than our site and I'm wondering how a stock WP theme site with very few inbound links can rank top five for a reasonably competitive keyword? Our site is http://vtrainersinc.com. The site I've noticed that ranks top five and seems to have an inferior SEOMoz profile is bodycrafters.net. Anybody got any ideas as to why these things seem to occur? I have this feeling this site has stumbled upon a magic SEO elixir which I'd like to get my hands on!

Keyword Research Tool Problem
Hi, I had been in SEO for around 2 to 3 years, I am looking for your suggestion if there is any best keyword research tool. I tried almost most of the keyword research tool (both paid or free) but I found the following problem: -Worktracker: I think it is too difficult to use and understand as a non technical person. I always wonder the data accuracy because when the same keyword appear in Google for few thousand traffic, it only appear in Wordtracker for few dozen or hundred of search. Also I don't think they suggest any long trail keywords in my view. The long trail keyword you can also find in free keyword search tool. -Google Keywords Tool- Good, but it can only show 100 results. I cannot get a better pictures of related or niches keywords. I always find some competitive keywords can rank easily but some non competitive keywords usually very difficult to rank in some case. It will depend on how you interpret the data results. -Keyword Discovery and Wordstream-Although I really want to subscribe, but they are a way too expensive (you have to subscribe for 12 months). I check with their free keywords tool but only shown very limited results. Although there are some other like spyfu.com or keywords spy...... Is there any one can suggest me which is the best tool to start with keyword search for the long trail and niche keywords ? or is there any way or trick to find the best keywords ? Thank you. Tom

Best Link Analysis Tool?
Now that the Yahoo Site Explorer is not usable on sites unless they are in your Bing Webmaster Tools, what is the best tool out there to see an accurate list of inbound links to a site? Google tools are still pretty unreliable from what I can see...

Anyone have experience with "Link Research Tools" ?
I'm looking into Linkresearchtools.com for competitive backlink analysis. Already have SEOmoz (obviously) and Majestic. Anyone have any experience with the toolset? If so, what does it do well, what do you like, and where does it fall down? Cheers
