Title tags with >70 characters but most important words at start. Is this really a problem?
-
Is there in fact any kind of negative impact having title tags longer than 70 characters, as long as I place the most important keywords at the start and make sure that title still is compelling when cut somewhere around 70 characters?
Are the additional words after the 70 characters limit just ignored? May additional words dillute the strength of the first words or may they even be helpful ?
Any experience or any studies you know about impact of longer title tags? Or any statement from google about it?

thanks everybody for the feedback.
I actually also stumbled upon an excellent whiteboard friday from Cyrus related to the topic (also excellent comments at the bottom of the post)

Tim answered your question correctly and I'm going to give him a thumbs up for that buddy
-
Exactly what Tim said, its more about User Experience than anything else. I know top competitors with 70+ and rank well.
Having that ... at the end leaves me wondering most of the time

Look at it this way: You are telling the search engine what your page is about and why the page should be considered relevant. This is hard to do with a lot of title words. In a perfect SEO world you would have one title phase, have the H1 tag match that title phase, and try to mention the phase in the first part of the text. Use parts of the phrase throughout the text. All is lost if you are worried about writing for search rather than people. It is a myth that the search engines consider the first key word phase the most important, they look at all the title words and try and see how they are relevant to the text. So more key words the harder it will be to make all of them relevant in the text. Do the work create relevant pages for each key word or phrase.

The point with the dilution is very interesting
Do you remember any sources where anybody tested whether dilution takes place or did you yourself see significant changes in ranking after shortening title tags? -
Tim covered this well.
As an addon comment:
May additional words dillute the strength of the first words or may they even be helpful ?
** Yes, more words - will dilute the strength of the keywords even if those are placed in front. Count it like - the strength is split between the number fo words in the Title Tag.
Cheers.

One area where it will have an indirect negative impact is in CTR from the SERPs. The Title gets a searcher's attention, while the Desc sells them on the click. Anything beyond 70 char is not there for the searcher or visitor's sake since they won't see it. This could lead to a negative impact in CTR which is a trust factor issue. If your CTR is less than surrounding sites in the SERPs on a consistent basis, you will likely start to see rank drops.
Here is a Matt Cutts video on Title that emphasizes this point: http://youtu.be/THYguer_JrM
Beyond the user experience concern, it comes down to whether the extra characters are being used for keyword stuffing or not. If not, it probably won't have a significant negative impact, but then you have to ask yourself why did I choose to use these extra characters...

Brand name in title of posts?
Hi All,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | JohnPalmer
new question about my blog: in my posts title I have to add the brand? for example -
The title of the post | My Brand name
Or just the title without the brand? Because my post title too long and I know that Google show only the 60 characters. so it will show like this:
The long title of my post | My Brand n... (just for example) is it okay? or for 100% optimization I have to keep it 60 Characters and no more. What do you think? Is it bad for my brand? good?0 -
Adding a Canonical Tag to each page referencing itself?
Hey Mozers! I've noticed that on www.Zappos.com they have a Canonical tag on each page referencing it self. I have heard that this is a popular method but I dont see the point in canon tagging a page to its self. Any thoughts?

Are footer links important?
We currently display a list of links in the footer of our site to help boost SEO. They were put in place years ago and in a recent discuss with our UX team they requested we remove them from the site. Do footer links have any value? Or is this an old dated practice that no longer works? If we remove the footer links should we expect to see if have an impact on our SEO traffic?

Changing meta title dynamically e.g. with number of reviews in title. Is this a problem?
I would like to put the number of reviews in the meta title of a product page. I noticed that tripadvisor for example does the same. However I read in some places that people encountered problems with frequent title tag changes. Did you ever encounter problems by just changing numbers in title tag?

Do you think it is really a problem if just the number of the reviews changes? what about putting number of reviews in the meta description instead?0 -
What problems could arise from updating php version?
i havent really gotten a straight answer yet for this question - my client says: "The developers are skeptical about the possibility to update PHP on our server as this could seriously damage the entire RV site functionality." since i know nothing about php and any potential hazards i have to ask the community to see if there is any validity to these concerns. we cant update our version of WP unless the version of php is first upgraded from 5.1.6 to 5.2.4 client wont do this because developers say its a potential nightmare i , as seo, want a current updated version of WP for many obvious reasons can anyone please tell me what, if any, problems could arise from upgrading the sites php? or is it just a lot of work and the developers are making excuses because they dont want to do it? thanks very much to whoever answers

Canonical Tags?
I read that Google will "honor" these tags if your website has two url's with duplicate content. The duplicate content does not show up in my SEOmoz crawls report but they do in the search engines and many of "non authoritative links" that are generated from my search feature j(ugly url's with % ...not real user friendly) are ranking higher than the "good URL" links. So if I do the canonical tags I guess my higher ranking bad urls will drop. I even read that google might even completely overlook the links. I read somewhere that the best way to do this is with a 301 redirect...is that correct? I m ranking pretty good with my main keyword terms so I am afraid to make changes not knowing the effect. Any suggestions? Thanks, Boo

New Website.. From where to start with a SEO Plan ?
Hi.. We have got two SEO and link builders working here in the office, putting in efforts is not a problem. And we have been doing SEO for our websites since a long time and they all rank well. Since, I have signed up for SEOMOZ, which is the one stop with all the heavy duty SEO guys, so we would like to get some suggestions from the experts. Ok here is the question. We have launched a new website this week and we have got a new SEO client, whose website is 6 months old. 1. What should be a proper SEO plan for a new website ? Got any Plan PDF or Buleprint, which you can send me ? 2. For the client website , he is ranking on 4-7th pages for his 4 keywords. Whats should be the correct way or plan to start doing SEO for them and get them to the first page ? 3. I feel like, doing competitive analysis is lacking with us and we are not good at evaluating that step. Whats the bet way to do competitive analysis ? 4. We are looking to build more and more links to the website . Whats the best way to make links ? Got any SEOMoz Blog post link, which explain this better or any forum thread which has got the tricks for this ?
