How Google Deals with States and State Abbreviations
-
I am in the process of doing research on building content for some state to state transactions. Through our PPC ad history I can see people have searched relatively evenly for full state names versus state abbreviations. Texas vs TX or California vs. CA. If I do a google search for one of our key terms with the state abbreviation, it seems that google returns results with the full state name and bolds the full state name in the meta description even though only the abbreviation, and not the full state name was part of the search. I guess I'm trying to figure out if its worth me building out and targeting two sets of content...one around the full state names and one around the state abbreviations.
Any advice?

Hi Chris
I generally agree with "xvp's" answer. Google for the most part can pick up the distinction between the state and abbreviation. What you can do is check search volume (if there is any) for each - optimize for the one most searched for in key places like the title tag, but just make sure to include variations within the content if possible. Like include the abbreviation in the meta description if you've written it out in the title tag. But you definitely don't need to create separate pieces of content or anything just to target one or the other.

Hi Chris,
Google recognizes both, and will show results for both on a search for one (either abbreviation or full name), but they are still working out this kinks. Issues like Google not being able to distinguish between words with more than one meaning like "OH" as the state abbreviation and as the expression, "IN", "OR" etc. They also still treat key phrases as separate in some cases, so if the phrase is searched I would target both. If you must choose, go for the full name.
Hope this makes sense.

How to get visibility in Google Discover?
Hey everyone, I run a website that publish articles about pets. I have read some great things about Google Discover and the potential traffic it can bring to publishers (Condé Nast reported up to 20% of traffic coming from Discover in the US, at a certain point). I am currently trying to get indexed and after reading Google guidelines and a Ahrefs guide, I have made many optimizations to my site: structured data, creating an author page, fixing image size and publishing date... so far, it's not working. I feel the lack of a knowledge graph for my business may affect my chances. I'm currently building a GMB page to fix this. Do you have other recommendations or success stories of your own experiments with Discover? An example of an article I tried to get indexed was https://www.lebernard.ca/teletravail-chien-guide-survie/. Obviously, I'm not expecting feedback on the quality of the content since it's in French, but I'm curious if you see anything from a technical perspective that doesn't work. Thanks a lot for your help! Charles

Homepage disappeared from Google
Hello, Since 2 weeks, our website is losing positions in Google. After years on the first page, we dropped for our main keyword to the 3rd page. Seems that all the positions we lost, were ranking with the homepage. Now, we are on the 3rd page but with a less important page. How is it possible that only the homepage disappeared? Is there any explanation for that? I hope there is an explanation, so we can fix the trouble. Kind regards, Tine

Is google seeing "all" my homepage?
Hello All 🙂 Since launching my new website design - www.advanced-driving.co.uk I am not convinced Google is seeing all the content on the page. I took a long extract of text and did a search on Google and nothing was found. Also although in the search results for "advanced driving course" I can see the new title tag, the snippet isn't showing.. Is there anyway I can check this? As a scroll down I can see the URL changes ie: www.advanced-driving.co.uk

Fetch As Google Redirect from HTTPS to HTTP
Hi Moz Community, We just launched a redesigned site and moved our blog from http://sparkline.motifinvesting.com to https://www.motifinvesting.com/blog. When I went to check the site today I noticed something strange. When I Fetch a Blog URL as Google it is redirecting from https to http AND dropping the / <post-id>from the end of the URL.</post-id> So for the URL https://www.motifinvesting.com/blog/cleantech-obama-romney/1494 I am getting the attached results when I Fetch as Google. When I access the same URL in my browser, I see a 200 status code and no redirect. Why would Google Bot show that the URL is being redirected? Thanks,

How do you find synonyms for a word in Google?
Hi, How would you go about finding a connection between words in the eyes of Google? So for example if I enter ~shoes -shoes I get a few things turn up in bold. Boots is one which makes sense and I would assume Google makes a connection between the words so using both in content would help semantically. BUT the other word it bolds is Store - this is where I get lost why would it make this connection unless Google is taking actual query data from users and making a different type of connection between words. How do you find a solid connection between words?

Canonical links apparently not used by google
hi, I do have an ecommerce website (www.soundcreation.ro) which in the last 3 months had a drop in the SERP. Started to look around in GWT what is happening. Google is reporting a lot of duplicate meta-tags (and meta-titles problem). But 99% of them had already canonical links setted. I tried to optimize my product listings with the new "prev", "next" tags and introduced also the "view-all" canonical link to help Google identify the appropiate product listing pages. SeoMoz is not reporting thos duplicate meta issues. Here is an example of the same page with different links, but with the same common canonical and reported by GWT "duplicate title tag": http://www.soundcreation.ro/chitare-chitari-electroacustice-cid10-pageall/http://www.soundcreation.ro/chitare-chitari-electroacustice-cid10/http://www.soundcreation.ro/chitare-chitari-electroacustice-cid10_999/http://www.soundcreation.ro/chitare-electro-acustice-cid10_1510/What could be the issue?- only that gwt is not refreshing as should be, keeping old errors?- if so, then there is an other serious issue because of why our PR is dropping on several pages?- do we have other problem with the site, which ends up with google penalizing us? Thank you for your ideas!

Random Google?
In 2008 we performed an experiment which showed some seemingly random behaviour by Google (indexation, caching, pagerank distributiuon). Today I put the results together and analysed the data we had and got some strange results which hint at a possibility that Google purposely throws in a normal behaviour deviation here and there. Do you think Google randomises its algorithm to prevent reverse engineering and enable chance discoveries or is it all a big load balancing act which produces quasi-random behaviour?
