Why is this site not ranking?
-
http://www.petstoreunlimited.com
They get good grades from the on-page tool. The links are not amazing, but are not super spammy.
Yet it ranks for nothing they target
Any reason why?
-
A major on-page problem for this website, check out these two URLs:
http://www.petstoreunlimited.com/tri-tronics-g3-g2-exp-collar-receiver-strap-5621150-blue/
http://www.petstoreunlimited.com/tri-tronics-g3-g2-exp-collar-receiver-strap-5621140-red/
According to the Copyscape Compare tool, they're 98% similar, so Google will certainly see them as duplicate content. Even worse, there are two more like it, for the yellow and green versions.
This problem is present with other product options, like pack quantity:
http://www.petstoreunlimited.com/2-pk-invisible-fence-battery-replacement-r21-r22-r51/
http://www.petstoreunlimited.com/4-pk-invisible-fence-battery-replacement-r21-r22-r51/
http://www.petstoreunlimited.com/6-pk-invisible-fence-battery-replacement-r21-r22-r51/
http://www.petstoreunlimited.com/10-pk-invisible-fence-battery-replacement-r21-r22-r51/
You've got two solutions:
- use a single rel=canonical for the pages that contain the same product so that they all point to a single version of this product (easier)
- use a single page for the product and allow users to see colors/size/etc. on the page either via a "Colors"/"Pack size" radio panel or dropdown, with optional JavaScript to change the photos if needed (more complicated).
Hope this helps, good luck!

I find it interesting still, that they do not even remotely rank for some of this. Several of these keywords are not that competitive and they do not show up anywhere in the top 5-10 pages.
They have been doing some better link building lately in terms of guest blogging but still getting nothing that they actually target
-
They do rank for a handful of keywords, like:
- affordable pet supply
- best wireless dog fence
- petsafe replacement collar strap
Without a solid link profile, unique trait/quality at the brand level it's going to be difficult to compete with the bigger names in the vertical. Short-tail rankings won't come easy, long-tails won't come without the link profile or extreme targeting.

Home Page Disappears From Google - But Rest of Site Still Ranked
As title suggests we are running into a serious issue of the home page disapearing from Google search results whilst the rest of the site still remains. We search for it naturally cannot find a trace, then use a "site:" command in Google and still the home page does not come up. We go into web masters and inspect the home page and even Google states that the page is indexable. We then run the "Request Indexing" and the site comes back on Google. This is having a damaging affect and we would like to understand why this issue is happening. Please note this is not happening on just one of our sites but has happened to three which are all located on the same server. One of our brand which has the issue is: www.henweekends.co.uk

301 old site to new site?
I have client with an old site - www.bestfamilylawattorney.com - which had a lot of spammy links (and bad rankings). Instead of fixing those issues, we started a new URL - www.berenjifamilylaw.com - with new content and redesign. Should I do a 301 redirect from old to new domain? If the old site was being penalized, would a 301 transfer that penalty? I just want to make sure I don't end up hurting the new site after doing all the work to start fresh. Thanks.

Traffic down after site migration
Hi! I've been working on a campaign for http://www.alwayshobbies.com/, which has seen a 35% in drop in traffic since changing ecommerce platforms. It's now been two months, but there is no sign of recovery. We are in the middle of cleaning up the link profile as part of a resubmission request, but that has been ongoing since before the migration. A lot of redirects were needed after 10k 404s appeared in Webmaster Tools after the new launch, but these have been reduced to around 500. We've been pretty thorough here, but I thought it would be worth checking in case there's something we've missed.

Understanding the levels in my site
How can I figure out which pages are on the same level on my site ? I created an automatic sitemap with a software online but it doesn't tell me abc page is on the 1 st level, xyz page is on the second level etc... and I have a hard time figuring out if my main menu is on the same level as my drop down menu as it is visible on the same page. Is there anyway to figure what which pages are on the same level ?

Lost all ranking after site-wide 301 redirect
Hi all I did a complete site-wide 310 redirect about 3 weeks ago for a site that had consistently been in Pos 1-5 for my targeted keyword ("low glycemic foods"). I changed the domain from low-glycemic-foods-org to low-glycemic-diet.com because I thought that was a more appropriate title and thru my readings I believed that if I carefully followed the recommended procedures I would quickly regain my SERP. Webmaster tools is showing that I have over 800 inbound links - many from very trustworthy sources including .edu, etc BUT my home page is nowhere to be found for the keyword search "low glycemic diet". My Seomoz onpage SEO score is an "A" Any enlightenment would be much appreciated.

Site Structure Question
Hi All, Got a question about site structure, I currently have a website where everything is hosted on the root of the domain. See example below: site.com/men site.com/men-shorts site.com/men-shorts-[product name] I want to change the structure to site.com/men/shorts/[product-name] I have asked a couple of SEOs and some agree with me that the structure needs to be changed and some say that as long as I dictate the structure with internal links and breadcrumbs the URL structure doesn't matter... What do you guys think? Many thanks, Carlos

Well Ranked National Site - Need Local Rankings
We are a virtual company doing business in 30 states nationwide. All our business is done via the phone, fax, email and express mail. Back in 2008 I optimized our small 8 page website for our key terms and was able to rank the site #1 nationally for our main keywords. (I did a 6 month consulting gig for the company). The site remained #1 in Google until last year when some serious competitors entered the space and knocked us down to the middle of page one. Then with the Panda update #1 & #2 we have seen our traffic drop 50% mostly due to not receiving the City + Keywords rankings any more. I have now been hired full time to bring us back but my question is this Do I need to build out city specific pages on the existing website? Do I need to buy keyword specific domains and create microsites? Do a combination of both? I would love to do both but I have to prioritize my efforts. Any thoughts would be great.
