Site duplication issue....
-
Hi All,
I have a client who has duplicated an entire section of their site onto another domain about 1 year ago. The new domain was ranking well but was hit heavily back in March by Panda.
I have to say the set up isn't great and the solution I'm proposing isn't ideal, however, as an agency we have only been tasked with "performing SEO" on the new domain.
Here is an illustration of the problem: http://i.imgur.com/Mfh8SLN.jpg
My solution to the issue is to 301 redirect the duplicated area of the original site out (around 150 pages) to the new domain name, but I'm worried that this could be could cause a problem as I know you have to be careful with redirecting internal pages to external when it comes to SEO.
The other issue I have is that the client would like to retain the menu structure on the main site, but I do not want to be putting an external link in the main navigation so my proposed solution is as follows:
- Implement 301 redirects for URLs from original domain to new domain
- Remove link out to this section from the main navigation of original site and add a boiler plate link in another area of the template for "Visit xxx for our xxx products" kind of link to the other site.
Illustration of this can be found here: http://i.imgur.com/CY0ZfHS.jpg
I'm sure the best solution would be to redirect in URLs from the new domain into the original site and keep all sections within the one domain and optimise the one site. My hands are somewhat tied on this one but I just wanted clarification or advice on the solution I've proposed, and that it wont dramatically affect the standing of the current sites.

Yes, if the client doesn't mind not having the content on the old domain, then 301 redirects are the best solution. Without seeing the navigation menu and the two sites, it's hard to evaluate whether you need to change the links. If it would seem odd to user to click the current link and land on the new domain, then what you suggest sounds good. If both sites are clearly identified as being the same company and look pretty similar, you may not need to change the link(s). The 301 redirects will take care of the search engines, the change to the link(s) is a question of user experience.

Thanks Lestr
I think I will test the canonical solution initially and see its effect over the next couple of months then review the results.
If I was to convince the client to break out the section of the site completely would my initial proposed solution be a preferred option?
Thanks

That's what should happen in theory. Your telling Google an Bing that the original content is at the new domain with the canonical tags. They should essentially ignore the content on the old site and only care about the content of the new site, since it's the original.
There's two caveats, though. First, is the Google expressly states that they treat the canonical tag as a suggestion. So, there's no guarantee that they'll treat the tags the way they are intended. Secondly, if the new domain has already been hit by Panda, then you have a bit of an uphill battle. Google has already decided that they think the real source of the content is the old domain name and you are trying to convince them they have it backwards.
Even with the caveats, though, canonical tags are the only solution that fits the situation and the client's wishes (to still have the content on both sites). The only other suggestion you could give is to redo the content on the new site so it is unique. That's a lot more work, though.

OK, so if I was to roll out canonical tags across the original site pointing to the new site, would these eventually switch out for the new URLs within the SERPs?
Thanks

If you are wanting to continue to link to the old domain within the old domain but remove any hits from the new domain I would simply put a canonical tag in the old domain designating the new domain as the content source. This way you can continue to use it and link to it within the old domain to allow a unified UX and give full SEO credit to the right spot.

Moving from http to https: image duplicate issue?
Hello everyone, We have recently moved our entire website virtualsheetmusic.com from http:// to https:// and now we are facing a question about images. Here is the deal: All webpages URLs are properly redirected to their corresponding https if they are called from former http links. Whereas, due to compatibility issues, all images URLs can be called either via http or https, so that any of the following URLs work without any redirect: http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/images/icons/ResponsiveLogo.png https://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/images/icons/ResponsiveLogo.png Please note though that all internal links are relative and not absolute. So, my question is: Can that be a problem from the SEO stand point? In particular: We have thousands of images indexed on Google, mostly images related to our digital sheet music preview image files, and many of them are ranking pretty well in the image pack search results. Could this change be detrimental in some way? Or doesn't make any difference in the eyes of Google? As I wrote above, all internal links are relative, so an image tag like this one: Hasn't changed at all, it is just loaded in a https context. I'll wait for your thoughts on this. Thank you in advance!

Merging Niche Site
I posted a question about this a while ago, but still haven't pulled the trigger. I have a main site (bobsclothing.com). I also have a EM niche site (i.e shirtsmall.com). It would be more efficient for me to merge these site, because: I would have to manage content, promos, etc. on a single site. In other words, I can focus efforts on 1 site. If I am writing content, I don't have to split the work. I don't have to worry about duplicate content. Right now, if I enter a product URL into copyscape, the other sites is returned for many products. What makes me apprehensive are: The niche site actually ranks for more keywords than the main site, although it has lower revenue. Slightly lower PA, and DA. Niche site ranks top 20 for a profitable keyword that has about 1300 exact match searches. If you include the longer tail versions of the keyword it would be more. If I merge these sites, and do proper 301s (product to product, category to category) how likely is it that main site will still rank for that keyword? Am I likely to end up with a site that has stronger DA? Am I better off keeping the niche site and just focusing content efforts on the few keywords that it can rank well for? I appreciate any advice. If someone has done this, please share your experience. TIA

Will merging sites create a duplicate content penalty?
I have 2 sites that would be better suited being merged and creating a more authoritative site. Basically I'de like to merge site A in to site B. If I add new pages from site A to Site B and create 301 redirects for those pages on site A to the new pages on Site B is that the best way to go about it? As the pages are already indexed would this create any duplicate content issue or would the redirect solve this?

Using WP All Import csv import plugin for wordpress to daily update products on large ecommerce site. Category naming and other issues.
We have just got an automated solution working to upload about 4000 products daily to our site. We get a CSV file from the wholesalers server each day and the way they have named products and categories is not ideal. Although most of the products remain the same (don't need to be over written) Some will go out of stock or prices may change etc. Problem is we have no control over the csv file so we need to keep the catagories they have given us. Might be able to create new catgories and have products listed under multiple categories? If anyone has used wp all import or has knoledge in this area please let me know. I have plenty more questions but this should start the ball rolling! Thanks in advance mozzers

Understanding the levels in my site
How can I figure out which pages are on the same level on my site ? I created an automatic sitemap with a software online but it doesn't tell me abc page is on the 1 st level, xyz page is on the second level etc... and I have a hard time figuring out if my main menu is on the same level as my drop down menu as it is visible on the same page. Is there anyway to figure what which pages are on the same level ?

How do I fix the error duplicate page content and duplicate page title?
On my site www.millsheating.co.uk I have the error message as per the question title. The conflict is coming from these two pages which are effectively the same page: www.millsheating.co.uk www.millsheating.co.uk/index I have added a htaccess file to the root folder as I thought (hoped) it would fix the problem but I doesn't appear to have done so. this is the content of the htaccess file: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^millsheating.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.millsheating.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.html\ HTTP/ RewriteRule ^index\.html$ http://www.millsheating.co.uk/ [R=301,L] AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
