Need Expert Footer Link Advice
-
We have a sister company that provides online administrative services to .EDUs. The administrative site has thousands of pages, with good pagerank, excellent trust, and a clean bill of health from Google, as does our corporate site. We have the ability to put footer links on every page back to our corporate website. Options:
1. Do nothing for fear of getting penalized by Google
2. Footer Link: Web Design by Logo, with "Web Design" being the anchor text.
3. Footer Link: Web Design by XYZ with "Web Design" and "XYZ" being the anchor text for link diversity.
4. Footer Link: Web Design by Logo with "Web Design" and the Logo (Alt Text "XYZ Corp") being anchors for link diversity.
5. Put up a page (or 2) about web design on the administrative site, have all of the footers link to that page, and have that page link back to our corporate site.
We really aren't doing anything wrong here, but both sites have a clean bill of health and the Google spam police have me paranoid. Our corporate site has an excellent link profile with hundreds of links from .gov, .us, and .edu. The links have commercial value, and can drive traffic to our site.
Looking for your thoughts before we make a move.

To make my self clear "xyz.com " is your domain name
Site Wide non relevant Footer links have a bad rap so any anchor text keyword used bedsides your domain name may one day get penalized . You still gain by having the link and the text near it does use keywords so not a total loss.
But then again this is just a safe approach......

When buying used domains, how do i see the links pointing to that domain? OSE not showing links
when buying used domains, how do i see the links pointing to that domain? Sometimes the open site explorer doesn't show any links to the domain, especially if the domain is parked. Obviously a domain for sale with 1000 domains linking to it has lots of SEO Value right? Thanks mozzers!

Link text
Can anyone give me any advise regarding anchor text in back links on external sites. I have about 8 bloggers reviewing our products on their sites. When they link to our site, they either use the words of our company name or something like “click here” as the words in the link. There are a few key words that we are wanting to improve for so should those words be made as the live link on their site?

Old links
I am looking to remove some old directory links that now look spammy. Some years ago the site was redesigned. The links are all to the old pages url, which is 301 redirected to the new. If we remove the 301 and let the page 404, will that suffice in Googles eyes?

Should you always link back?
I am asking this for two reasons: Courtesy: Is it common courtesy to reciprocate with a link back if somebody has linked to your site? SEO: Does linking back affect your rankings at all? A blog has linked to one of my clients' sites as part of a round-up of "top 100 best" within their industry. They have also sent us an email suggesting that we add a link from our site saying that we've been listed. Of course, I understand that it is in my clients' interest for us to advertise on their site that they've been listed in a Top 100 list... However, it got me thinking (as more of a general question) - does reciprocating a link ever affect it's value at all? ie. Is two-way linking ever considered part of a link exchange in the eyes of Google, and does it penalize you at all for that?

Linking articles to each other
I've been using white-hat article marketing to post original content about my niche to credible article directories (yes, I realize many of them were recently devalued). My question is: Is it a good or bad idea to have future articles link to older articles, as a way to increase the chances of having the older articles indexed, or increasing the amount of link juice they pass to my site (since they point to my site)? I get 2 links per article and was thinking of using 1 to point to a prior (related) article, and the other to point to my site.
