WordPress Duplicate Content Issues
-
Everyone knows that WordPress has some duplicate content issues with tags, archive pages, category pages etc...
My question is, how do you handle these issues?
Is the smart strategy to use robots meta and add no follow/ no index category pages, archive pages tag pages etc?
By doing this are you missing out on the additional internal links to your important pages from you category pages and tag pages?
I hope this makes sense.
Regards,
Bill

Hey Bill
I like to start with this standard setup (image/chart from my wordpress post on moz);
Pages, Posts, Categories - Index
Tags, Dated Archives, Subpages, Author Archives - noindex
You can check out the full post - I will be updating the Yoast Screenshots very soon!

Thanks for article,
Now 2 years ahead, are there any important updates for preventing duplicate content/titles?

Most of the Plugins for wordpress use canonical urls.

Unless I'm missing something here, wouldn't it be easier to set the canonical tag for the main post? There are also plugins like SEO Ultimate that handle this automatically.

I posted this article I wrote the other day for someone asking a similar question.
With the Yoast SEO Plugin I no-index everything except Categories. You can see how I set mine up under section 3. Indexation.
Here is the original question that Sha submitted:

There are several SEO plugs available for WP that will handle these issues. Yes, you are right that adding "noindex" will be beneficial on tag, category, and archive pages. The idea here is avoiding duplicate content issues. BTW, check out: Yoast SEO for Wordpress.
Here is how the values for the robots meta tag work:
- noindex will keep a page from being crawled
- nofollow will prevent a page's links from being followed
I agree with noindex'ing these pages; though I would argue that a nofollow is still worth leaving out. If these pages have any juice you want to allow this to flow to the other links on the page.

The WP on my blog is set up as follows (this is a blog that gets between four and ten short posts per day - about two to four sentences, each post linking to an article or other content on a topic-related website)
Homepage: Full text of the most recent 25 posts are displayed. Pagination pages are not indexed (blocked by robots.txt).
Post Pages: Full text is displayed and the title plus a few words of 20 related posts are displayed.
Category Pages: I have over 100 categories and each post is placed into at least two categories (one by location and one by topic). Some posts go into three or four categoreis - sometimes more. Each category page displays the full text of the most recent 25 posts. Categories do not have pagination pages (blocked by robots.txt).
All of the above pages are fully indexed and a long list of category pages appears in the left-side navigation. I don't use tag pages or archive pages. There is a lot of dupe content in this system but so far I am lucky that it does not cause a problem. The category pages pull a lot of organic search traffic.
In January of each year I delete all of the posts that are over a year old. Before doing that I identify those that are pulling reasonable traffic and either redirect them to a permanent page about same topic, write an article about that topic and redirect, or recycle that post. All the rest are redirected to the homepage of the blog.

Duplicate content : domain alias issue
Hello there ! Let's say my client has 2 webshops (that exists since long time, so many backlinks & good authority on both) : individuals.nl : for individuals (has 200 backlinks, let's say) pros.nl : exact same products, exact same content, but with a different branding intended to professionnals (has 100 backlinks, let's say) So, both websites are 99% identical and it has to remain like that !!! Obviously, this creates duplicate content issues. Goal : I want "individuals.nl" to get all ranking value (while "pros.nl" should remain accessible through direct access & appear on it's own brand queries). Solution ? Implement canonical tags on "pros**.nl**" that goes to "individuals.nl". That way, "individuals.nl" will get all ranking value, while "pros.nl" will still be reachable through direct access. However, "individuals.nl" will then replace "pros.nl" from SERP in the long-term. The only thing I want is to keep "pros.nl" visible for its own brand queries -> it won't be possible through organic search result, so, I'm just gonna buy those "pros" queries through paid search ! Put links on all pages of pros.nl to individuals.nl (but not the other way around), so that "pros.nl" will pass some ranking value to "individuals.nl" (but only a small part of the ranking value -> ideally, I would like to pass all link value to this domain). Could someone advise me ??? (I know it sound a bit complicated... but I don't have much choice ^^)

Is duplicate content ok if its on LinkedIn?
Hey everyone, I am doing a duplicate content check using copyscape, and realized we have used a ton of the same content on LinkedIn as our website. Should we change the LinkedIn company page to be original? Or does it matter? Thank you!

Content Duplication and Canonical Tag settings
Hi all, I have a question regarding content duplication. My site has posted one fresh content in the article section and set canonical in the same page for avoiding content duplication._But another webmaster has taken my post and posted the same in his site with canonical as his site url. They have not given to original source as well._May I know how Google will consider these two pages. Which site will be affected with content duplication by Google and how can I solve this issue? If two sites put canonical tags in there own pages for the same content how the search engine will find the original site which posted fresh content. How can we avoid content duplication in this case?

404 and Duplicate Content.
I just submitted my first campaign. And it's coming up with a LOT of errors. Many of them I feel are out of my control as we use a CMS for RV dealerships. But I have a couple of questions. I got a 404 error and SEO Moz tells me the link, but won't tell me where that link originated from, so I don't know where to go to fix it. I also got a lot of duplicate content, and it seems a lot of them are coming from "tags" on my blog. Is that something I should be concerned about? I will have a lot more question probably as I'm new to using this tool Thanks for the responses! -Brandon here is my site: floridaoutdoorsrv.com I welcome any advice or input!

Duplicate content - Quickest way to recover?
We've recently been approached by a new client who's had a 60%+ drop in organic traffic. One of the major issues we found was around 60k+ pages of content duplicated across 3 seperate domains. After much discussion and negotiation with them; we 301'd all the pages across to the best domain but traffic is increasing very slowly. Given that the old sites are 60k+ pages each and don't get crawled very often, is it best to notify the domain change through Google Webmaster Tools to try and give Google a 'nudge' to deindex the old pages and hopefully recover from the traffic loss as quickly and as much as possible?

Crawl Errors and Duplicate Content
SEOmoz's crawl tool is telling me that I have duplicate content at "www.mydomain.com/pricing" and at "www.mydomain.com/pricing.aspx". Do you think this is just a glitch in the crawl tool (because obviously these two URL's are the same page rather than two separate ones) or do you think this is actually an error I need to worry about? Is so, how do I fix it?
