Is it worth keeping .html even if 301'ing
-
We're going from static to a wordpress based ecommerce site.
While we can append .html to urls the directory structure will change so that
www.oursite.com/productname.html goes to www.oursite.com/product/productname.html
My question is: Is it worth the trouble (from an seo perspective) of using a plugin to append new urls with .html when we're going to have to use 301 redirects anyway?
If not should the urls have a trailing slash?
-
Since you're doing redirects already, I'd get rid of the .html. They're not user friendly, and you're already doing a redirect anyways so why not. Seeing them on URLs looks old to me, most sites don't have them anymore.
Trailing slashes I don't have a strong opinion on. If these pages will never have pages after them, then I'd opt for no trailing slash, just because I think most sites do that now.

I really wouldn't worry about it if I were you. You are choosing to set up an e-commerce site on the most hacked platform in the world.
-
Yes, we're familiar with that plugin and we've decided it's to risky in an ecomerce setting.
-
Hey, I googled it and found it. This is it http://wordpress.org/plugins/seo-ultimate/ Look down at the permalink tweaker, that is what I was talking about.
-
Actually you can take those off in wordpress. You just have to be careful about collisions. A collision being say a page that has the same name as a product. I use one of the SEO plugins to take the category names off of my site. I know it is not the yoast plugin, but it is the other popular one.
Sorry, I would log in and tell you what it is, but I am on a mobile device and someone has actually been trying to crack my site for the last few days, so I deleted my wp-login page. So the site cannot be logged into currently. When I get back around my desktop I will give you the name of the SEO module I use to do it.

The problem is we can't preserve site structure. Keeping file names the same is not a problem but all new product URLs will have ..../product/.... added.
My question is that as we're forced to use a 301 here anyway, is it worth keeping the .html.
-
I have seen lots of discussion about 301 passing "link juice" and page authority, and what not. If you can mimic the exact structure you have now, then it won't be an issue of whether things will pass. Also, there is a down time in SE's when you change a whole sites urls. You can skip that too if you leave them the same.

Https Implementation - Weird Redirection After Putting 's' in http://
Hi Mozers, I have come across some websites with their https version going to a totally different website. For example, http://www.samplesite1.com will load fine but when the protocol is changed to https (https://www.samplesite1.com) it will go to a total different domain say, https://www.samplesite2.com How does this happen, in technical sense? In the warning from browser, it says the the security certificate is from the other website but I would like to understand how this happens and how it impacts SEO. I seem to be not able to understand the relationship of this error and SEO impact. Thanks in advance for your response. Malika

Does anyone know of an easy way to create jump links in WordPress without having to hardcode it into the HTML?
I am using Genesis Framework with the New Pro child theme on my site called Learn Internet Grow and when I create long articles I like to have a menu so readers can jump to a specific section. I wonder if there is a best practice for how to create jump links quickly without having to switch between the code editor and the post editor. There are a bunch of plugins but I am wary of adding more. Maybe if someone can tell me about one they had a good experience with. Ideally, a resource that shows you how to create a custom plugin for this or a non-plugin way to alter the framework to enable easy jump linking.

URL Re-Mapping Question ?. Do I need to the theme of my business in my url struture even though GWT knows what my site is about
Hi All, I have currently planning to do some url remapping on my Hire Website as alot of most important pages are far to many levels deep from the root domain. This is also making my sitemap not tidy etc. In GWT, Google knows that the theme is my website is Hire as it's the top word. Therefore do I still need to use the word hire in all my new url categories / structures or not ? Examples http://goo.gl/BFmvk2 I was thinking of remapping to www.xxxxxxx.xco.uk/tool-hire-birmingham http://goo.gl/pC9Bdp I was thinking of remapping to www.xxxxxx.co.uk/cleaning-equipment Notice in the later example , I do not have the word rent in the url. Any advice is much appreciated thanks peter

301 Redirect ! Joomla Pages, Already ranking. ( just wanted to change the url
hey guys hope everyone had a new year. I am ranking for a page on my site that i want to ( not specifically move ), but just change the url name: It is too long i think and i want to move it from one portion of my architecture to another menu. I have never physically done a 301 redirect myself, always had someone do it for me. I wanted some pointers. Since it is a fairly new site 4 months old! What are my options. Do i need to 301 redirect the page, if i am changing the Structure and AI of my site, or can i just change the url as is and it will still get ranked? How do i keep that url put delete the page and redirect it ? Sorry its very simple but i wanted to get the communities help to continue on ! Best Wishes HAmpig

Can't figure out what's going on with these strange 403's
The last crawl found a good number of 404's and I can't figure out what's going on. I don't even recognize these links. What's really strange is a few of them high a fairly decent page authority. For instance this one has a PA of 55: http://noahsdad.com/?path=http%3A%2F%2Feurosystems.it%2Fconf_commerciale%2Fimages%2Fdd.gif%3F%3F There are several more like this one also, it seems most of these new ones have "Feurosystems" in the link...I have no idea what that is. Just curious what you guys think is going on, why these are 404'ing, and how to fix it. Thanks. Edit: I took out the "%" from the links and I get this: http://noahsdad.com/?path=http3A2F2Feurosystems.it2Fconf_commerciale2Fimages2Fdd.gif3F3F which takes me to a page on my site. I have no idea what's going on, or what that link is. Hoping someone can chime in because this is strange. Another edit: I just checked out the Google Webmaster's and it looks like these errors are 403's and all started around March 21st. I have no idea what happend on March 21st to start causing all of these errors, but I'd sure like to get it fixed. 🙂

How is an SEO's time best used?
We have over 50 highly varied and niche sites in our company. Each website is for an annual event spread across the calendar. I am the solo SEO person here and was wondering what your opinions are about what would bring in the greatest SEO power in my limited daily allotment; link building? Keywords? Content? Oh, and to make my life even easier - its all based on SharePoint 2007!
