WP image pages
-
I used Dreamweaver for years but have recently been switching to Wordpress. On the whole the results have been very positive. However, I don't like the way that WP generates a page for images when the image is inserted into a blog post. I was just reading this http://www.eyeflow.com/content-strength-audit/ excellent article on Content Strength Audit and it referred to this problem as well.
Often, when I insert an image into a blog, I delete the reference to the image page and link directly to the image. Is this an effective way to deal with the is problem? Is there a better approach?
Best,
Christopher -
Thanks for mentioning our Content Strength Audit. I would of suggested Wordpress SEO for the easiest solution to this problem but It seems it's already been suggested and seems you're using it.

Hi Christopher
I think you all have this sorted out, but it's a common question (and I agree that WP is a little lacking here) - so I addressed it in my Mozinar a few months ago (pages 60-66 of the downlaodable slide deck).
But to sum up that section - your image linked options are;
- Custom URL (if you want to link to another post or an external link) - this option is fine if that's the user experience you want.
- Media URL - this will link straight to the image file (no new page, just the file its self) - this is what I usually do if I want to user to be able to perhaps click to image to see it bigger.
- Attachment page - this is the one you DON'T want. It creates a new unique URL for the image which can get spidered and indexed. Not very useful.
- None - you can not click the image at all. I use this when the image looks good within the content and there's no need to click on it.
I would also recommend using "noindex" for media in Yoast SEO.

Sweet! I use SEO by Yoast (and his sitemap) so this will be an easy solution.

Hi Christopher,
Just to add on to Vadim's suggestion, if you wish to disable attachment pages for your previous posts efficiently, you can install plugins to redirect attachment URLs to parent post URLs. This will reduce the chances of visitors going to your attachment pages unnecessarily.
One of such plugins is Wordpress SEO by Yoast, and the relevant option can be activated under the Permalinks tab. This post should be useful for you too: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-disable-image-attachment-pages-in-wordpress/

Great, to a great future working with Wordpress it is by far my favorite platform to publish content online. Its definitely worth investing some time into it!

Thanks. I have installed the new version and will look for this setting going forward.

Thanks for the quick response.
Ok I see what you mean, it doesnt create a separate page,
What do you call it if not a page? The image is linked by an href. Isn't that another page? Does that href pass link juice to a page with no content?
If you click on link to NONE the image will not open in a new window.
Thanks, I'll give that a try.
Best,
Christopher -
This is on the newer version of WP, see attached. Let me know if this helped or if you have any more questions

Ok I see what you mean, it doesnt create a separate page, but opens up the image in the whole window, but you can treat it as its own page. When you upload an image you have options to select what you use as a link for it right now you have selected to link to the image itself.
If you click on link to NONE the image will not open in a new window. See attached. This might be the older layout of WP but the functionality show be the same

Here is a post I created this morning and have not yet cleaned up.
http://www.freelapusa.com/david-oliver-prepares-for-iaaf-world-championship-moscow-2013/
Click on the image to see what I mean. Is there any value to adding a separate page for the image? Doesn't that pass link juice to a page with no content? Is there an automated way to turn off this feature in WP? I really like WP but unless I'm missing something (quite possible) the feature set of the Media Library seems woefully lacking.
Best,

Hi Christopher,
I have used wordpress for many years now and on many sites, what do you mean WP generates a page for images? do you have a link to show or take a screenshot? Thanks

Which pages should I index or have in my XML sitemap?
Hi there, my website is ConcertHotels.com - a site which helps users find hotels close to concert venues. I have a hotel listing page for every concert venue on my site - about 12,000 of them I think (and the same for nearby restaurants). e.g. https://www.concerthotels.com/venue-hotels/madison-square-garden-hotels/304484 Each of these pages list the nearby hotels to that concert venue. Users clicking on the individual hotel are brought through to a hotel (product) page e.g. https://www.concerthotels.com/hotel/the-new-yorker-a-wyndham-hotel/136818 I made a decision years ago to noindex all of the /hotel/ pages since they don't have a huge amount of unique content and aren't the pages I'd like my users to land on . The primary pages on my site are the /venue-hotels/ listing pages. I have similar pages for nearby restaurants, so there are approximately 12,000 venue-restaurants pages, again, one listing page for each concert venue. However, while all of these pages are potentially money-earners, in reality, the vast majority of subsequent hotel bookings have come from a fraction of the 12,000 venues. I would say 2000 venues are key money earning pages, a further 6000 have generated income of a low level, and 4000 are yet to generate income. I have a few related questions: Although there is potential for any of these pages to generate revenue, should I be brutal and simply delete a venue if it hasn't generated revenue within a time period, and just accept that, while it "could" be useful, it hasn't proven to be and isn't worth the link equity. Or should I noindex these "poorly performing pages"? Should all 12,000 pages be listed in my XML sitemap? Or simply the ones that are generating revenue, or perhaps just the ones that have generated significant revenue in the past and have proved to be most important to my business? Thanks Mike

Paginated pages are being indexed?
I have lots of paginated pages which are being indexed. Should I add the noindex tag to page 2 onwards? The pages currently have previous and next tags in place. Page one also has a self-referencing canonical.

How to get google to forget my old but still working page and list my new fully optimized page for a keyword?
Hi There! (i am beginner in seo) I have dynamic and static pages on our site. I created a static page for a specific keyword. Fully optimized it, (h1, alt, metas, etc.....maybe too optimized). My problem is that this page is alive for weeks, checked it in GWT and it is in robots.txt, google sees it, and indexed it. BUT whenewer i do a search for that keyword, we still appear with the dynamically created link in the google listings. How could i "redirect" google, if sy make a search for that keyword than shows our optimized page? Is there a tool for that? I cant delete the dynamic page... Any ideas? Thx Andrew

Does adding subcategory pages to an commerce site limit the link juice to the product pages?
I have a client who has an online outdoor gear company. He mostly sells high end outdoor gear (like ski jackets, vests, boots, etc) at a deep discount. His store currently only resides on Ebay. So we're building him an online store from scratch. I'm trying to determine the best site architecture and wonder if we should include subcategory pages. My issue is that I think the subcategory pages might be good from a user experience, but it'll add an additional layer between the homepage and the product pages. The problem is that I think a lot of user's might be searching for the product name to see if they can find a better deal, and my client's site would be perfect for them. So I really want to rank well for the product pages, but I'm nervous that the subcategory pages will limit the link juice of the product pages. Home --> SubCategory --> Product List --> Product Detail Home --> Men's Ski Clothing --> Men's Ski Jack --> North Face Mt Everest Jacket Should I keep the SubCategory page "Men's Ski Clothing" if it helps usability? On a separate note, the SubCategory pages would have some head keyword terms, but I don't think that he could rank well for these terms anytime soon. However, they would be great pages / terms to rank for in the long term. Should this influence the decision?

NOINDEX,FOLLOW on product pages
Hi Can I have people's thoughts on something please. We sell wedding stationery and whilst we can generate lots of good content describing a particular range of stationery we can't relistically differentiate at a product level. So imagine we have three ranges Range 1 - A Bird Range 2 - A Heart Range 3 - A Flower Within each of these ranges we would have invitations, menus, place cards, magnets etc. The ranges vary quite alot so we can write good textual keyword rich descriptions that attract traffic (i.e. one about the bird, one about the heart and one about the flower). However the individual products within a range just reflect the design for the range as a whole (as all items in a range match). Therefore we can't just copy the content down to the product level and if we just describe the generic attributes of the products they will alll be very similar. We have over 1,000 "products" easily so I am conscious of creating too much duplication over the site in case Mr Panda comes to call. So I was thinking that I "might" NOINDEX, FOLLOW the product pages to avoid this duplication and put lots of effort into making my category pages much better and content rich. The site would be smaller in the index BUT I do not really expect to generate traffic from the product pages because they are not branded items and any searches looking for particular features of our stationery would be picked up, much more effectively, by the category pages. Any thoughts on this one? Gary

Home page canonical issues
I think I’ve got a canonical issue with a client’s site that I’m having problems with I’ve noticed in their analytics that they receive traffic from themselves. I’ve used ‘ rel canonical’ throughout the site to avoid any dup issues and I have 301’ed every other variation of the home page I can think of. I don’t have full access to the back end of the host to control any of the iis as it’s an asp site. They seem to be getting traffic from their site under the URL of, example.com I’ve 301 redirected www.example.com/home.asp www.example.com/default.asp www.example.com/index.asp to www.example.com And 'rel canonical' the home page to www.example.com but still seem to be having the same problem any ideas? Thanks

Duplicate Page Content and Title for product pages. Is there a way to fix it?
We we're doing pretty good with our SEO, until we added product listing pages. The errors are mostly Duplicate Page Content/Title. e.g. Title: Masterpet | New Zealand Products MasterPet Product page1 MasterPet Product page2 Because the list of products are displayed on several pages, the crawler detects that these two URLs have the same title. From 0 Errors two weeks ago, to 14k+ errors. Is this something we could fix or bother fixing? Will our SERP ranking suffer because of this? Hoping someone could shed some light on this issue. Thanks.
