Confused about Google+ Local vs Google Places
-
If you're doing SEO for a new local business that currently does not have a Google Places listing (or a Google+ Local page), do you have to set up both for them? Or do you simply create the Google Places listing and wait for Google to merge it to a Google+ Local page?
I am so confused!

Hello Alan,
Thank you very much for sharing article. I am going to read it and make it happen with my two Google plus pages. If I will find out any issue over there so I will let you know about it.

Google is supposedly now merging multiple listings. Check out an article on this update.

Hello Alan,
I have similar issue like Marie. I can understand your answer. But, I would like to double check what I have concern with Google Plus Local Page & Google Plus Business Page.
I have claimed my business on Google Places and It shows me following URL when search on Google maps.
https://plus.google.com/108235988734456316513/about
Basically, I am quite excited and busy with my Google Plus Business Page.
https://plus.google.com/100698745523318366692/about
I have checked both pages for Moz and found similar pages which I have.
Moz Google Plus Local Page: https://plus.google.com/102108064038102307233/about
Moz Google Plus Business Page: https://plus.google.com/+SEOmoz/posts
Where I need to focus and spend my time? If I am working with my Google plus business page so Why Google is not land Google maps users to Google plus business page?
Really big confusion question for me. Can you please give me few more idea on it?

Thank you so much Alan. It is indeed confusing! I've had some people tell me not to create a Google+ Local page because one will automatically be created from my Places listing that I created. (I'm just waiting for PIN verification via postcard). I've had others tell me that yes, I do need to create a Google+ Local page for this business.
I'll read those resources you gave to me!

Welcome to the world of nonsense. Because there's a couple things to know about this issue
1. "Google Places" has "technically" become "Google+ Local". They claim in their official statements you can continue to use Google Places to maintain business info, and don't HAVE to migrate but that's not viable long-term as far as anyone who discusses it within the industry is concerned.
2. If you actually want to take advantage of the ability for users who have Google+ accounts to review a business, you'll want/need to migrate content from "Places" to "+ Local" if you had content in "Places"
3. The reason for this is it's not a 100% direct automated migration although if you set it up, they will migrate reviews for you but - new rules apply.
So to answer your question, Google is forcing people to HAVE to go with Google+ Local over time if you want maximum value.
Here's their official info on migrating from Places to + Local
And I recommend reading Portent Internet's Google+ Local write-up

I'm not ranking locally.....
Hello, We own the business BIM Fitness and Performance in Fort Myers, FL. However, when we do a search near us, we are down at the very bottom of the page. Can anyone provide some insight as to why this may be? I know SEO is the long game but is there anyway we can at least appear higher up locally?

Seeing different Google 3-Pack results on Android mobile browsers vs. IOS mobile browsers. Why is this?
I am researching new SEO recommendations in lieu of Google's controversial "3-Pack" update. I am noticing very different results in the Google 3-Pack on a android mobile browser when I do a local search query versus a query in apple mobile browser. For example if I do a Google search for "Seattle Sporting Goods" I am able to see direction links and full address numbers for businesses in the 3-Pack. However the same query on a Android phone provides only "teaser" street name results, no direction links but still shows business reviews. Is it possible that the 3-Pack update is still in flux? Shouldn't the Google 3-Pack show uniform results across all different mobile browsers? This could impact my SEO recommendations.

I have a client who lives in the UK but runs a US ecommerce site. I'd still like to get him some local trust signals but he has no options when it comes to getting an address here. Has anyone found a reputableplace where you can rent an address that isn't already being used by umpteen other companies?

Google Carousel - What Should We Now Be Doing Differently?
Google Carousel is rolling out for even more topics. How does it affect or change tracking in Google Analytics? For example, if I am in the Carousel and someone clicks my listing, then Google completes a search for my property… then the searcher clicks through to my site organically. Will I know that someone originally clicked the Carousel or will I have no idea and simply see a Google organic click? Should we be optimizing our Google+ Places listings differently? How does this change our own organic keyword targeting? In other words, if I am in the Carousel should I go after a different keyword organically? Does anyone know how many people are clicking into the Carousel vs. the organic listings or even pay per click below? Searchers behavior will be altered because of this change. What say you all? No option to claim listing in Google Places: country-wide issue
Hi, All! We were trying to advise a client about local SEO, and we ran into the issue of - their Google Places pages (yes, they have several, that's a separate issue) are "unclaimable." Meaning - up at the top of the page there is neither a "Edit this page - Business Owner?" heading or a "Edit this listing - Owner-verified listing" heading. When you try to claim it independently using the phone number (all pages have the same phone number, but different addresses), Google gives you "No address found for this phone number" and the option to now add a new page, which is not quite what we're looking for. This is an Israeli location, and this appears to be an issue with a few other random Israeli pages I checked (I saw pages with neither heading option). But a number of the Israeli pages have "Owner-verified listing." How did they get it? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Regards, Aviva

Meaning Behind Google Local Search Results Icons?
I can't seem to easily find this answer anywhere (even in the Google Places FAQ page), so thought I'd stop digging around and simply ask it here: What are the meanings behind the icons to the right of the link and to the left of the "place page" link in Google's local search results? I see a checkmark/question mark in a circle, then a bar chart with various levels filled in, then a dollar sign in a circle, then a magnifying glass. 1. What are these telling me, as a searcher? 2. What are they telling the owner of the business? Thank you for your help; I just can't seem to find a reference for this...
