How do i actually use the canonicalization rule for Apache?
-
Hi Guys,
Moz is reporting lots of duplicate content on my site. I think this is partly from session id's and partly from category pages and on-site search generated pages. I know I have to use the canonicalization rule but don't know exactly how to determine the correct URL and where to put the code. Can anyone offer any advice on this? I'm new to this so apologies for any etiquette breaching etc.
Many thanks, Stewart.

Stewart,
The canonicalization tag identifies the URL where the one true version of content can be found. The tag used on the one true version AND all on the copies of the true version are exactly same tag because the copies will point to the true version and the true version will point to itself. Often the version you're going to set as the one true version is that which has the shortest URL or the one without any parameters added to the end of it.
The whole purpose of the canonicalization tag is to be able to say "Hey Google, I know I have a bunch of URLs that have the same content--I know it's not ideal but there's nothing I can do about that. So what I want you to do is only count this specific URL in your index so all the others don't count against me as duplicate content."

Canonical homepage link uses trailing slash while default homepage uses no trailing slash, will this be an issue?
Hello, 1st off, let me explain my client in this case uses BigCommerce, and I don't have access to the backend like most other situations. So I have to rely on BG to handle certain issues. I'm curious if there is much of a difference using domain.com/ as the canonical url while BG currently is redirecting our domain to domain.com. I've been using domain.com/ consistently for the last 6 months, and since we switches stores on Friday, this issue has popped up and has me a bit worried that we'll loose somehow via link juice or overall indexing since this could confuse crawlers. Now some say that the domain url is fine using / or not, as per - https://mza.bundledseo.com/community/q/trailing-slash-and-rel-canonical But I also wanted to see what you all felt about this. What says you?

Am I using 301 correctly?
Hello, I have a 'Free download' type site for free graphics for designers. To prevent hot linking we authenticate the downloads and use a 301 redirect. So for example: The download URL looks like this if someone is clicking on the download button: http://www.website.com**/resources/243-name-of-the-file/download/dc37** and then we 301 that URL back to: http://www.website.com**/category-name/243-name-of-the-file** Is a 301 the correct way to do that?

Searching in Google using the Site:www.example.com specification - is it in an order?
Hi Gurus, Just a quick searching question. If you do a Google search using the site: specification eg. site:www.example.com Is the list returned by Google in an order of something similar to 'Page Authority' or some other order eg. page first seen date etc. Because you are looking at your single site, is Google listing your pages back to you in it's perceived order of current 'popularity'? Thanks, Brad

Cn I use SEOMOZ to find "Bad Links"
We were hit by the Penguin update and I am told it make be because of "Bad Links", but no one can seem to tell me how to find them. We never buy links, and in fact the only links I know about are those from paid affiliates through shareasale - and these affiliates are paid based on performance, not links. 1. Does anyone know how to figure out what links are bad? 2. Once I know, how do I get them to stop linking to my site? Thanks!

Is using splash pages considered cloaking?
For example I'm thinking of running people through a squeeze page when they come from search engines (for first time visitors only/cookied) ... example: http://www.whitehouse.gov/ Is it going to hurt SEO? Because basically you are serving a page that is different, than the one displayed in the SERP's.
