Does Gemvara really change URL when you customize the ring?
-
Hi,
I was looking at Gemvara.com which is supposed to be a really great e-commerce site (including SEO wise) and I noticed it changes url as you customize the ring (see product page example).
Do they really change the URL? (I don't see page refresh)
Is it recommended to do so? (for e-commerce sites whenever you change shirt color, customize a computer etc.)
Thanks
-
That is definitely rendered, you can tell because it is so perfect and there are not any weld lines for the prongs. I think most internet companies do this so they do not have to carry stock.
-
Looks great, I only knew about Rhino.
Do you think they used the same technology here:
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/14k-white-gold-2mm-knife-edge-solitaire-engagement-ring-six-prong-item-7990 -
They are all rendered in gemvision like gemvara's images, just make a macro that changes the angle a set number of degrees and renders, I think we used 10 degrees. Check this out, it is what a lot of people use. http://gemvision.com/matrix/
-
I understand the Java rotation but it means (I assume) that you had to take dozens of pictures in exactly the same lighting and without moving the item. Its crazy... (though the result is stunning)
-
The 3d rotation actually uses this library, it is in a module form for Prestashop. http://www.uize.com/examples/3d-rotation-viewer.html As far as not changing for the stone, the project never got that far, I was off of it before all of the features were added. It looks like they do not have another developer or they have not been added yet.
-
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
I see that in Vaja you change the URL only when a metal was changed and not the stone. I do love the 360. May i ask it was done? (36 images per item? How did you rotate it?)

I think a normal site can get away with it, if it is done correctly. I developed a site for a jewelry company that uses something similar. But their budget ran out before I could totally implement everything, I only did very limited SEO on the site before they moved the SEO to India (they are an Indian company themselves).
One thing I think can one up Gemvara is the descriptions. Take this description from Gemvara from this page http://www.gemvara.com/jewelry/emerald-cut-lisa-ring-6mm-gem/emerald-cut-emerald-platinum-ring/gfwx9
"This simple solitaire engagement ring is gorgeous for everyday wear and features a single emerald-cut gemstone. It is carefully handcrafted in your choice of gems and metals."
This description is used for every combination of that ring. Which more than likely draws a duplicate content penalty for the other pages (which in itself does not mean that they won't be indexed, it just means they won't be ranked as high). Now lets first look at the Gemvara url and put what we know about SEO in to it. gfwx9, that is meaningless to both you and I, it is no more than trash on the url, just watering it down. Lets look at the structure of the url, sitename.com/jewelry/RINGSTYLE/default-ring-parameters If you notice how the URL for that page works, if you change the style to white gold the url becomes, http://www.gemvara.com/jewelry/emerald-cut-lisa-ring-6mm-gem/emerald-cut-emerald-18k-white-gold-ring/gv3cm so it is safe to lose the trash at the end of the url.
Now for the description, it does not change, the only on site changes are the image, and the selection to the left of the piece. What if you used a variable system similar to how a content spinner worked and changed out words based on the metal or stone selection. I am going to caps the changed out words.
For a Yellow Gold and Diamond
This TRADITIONAL solitaire engagement ring is BEAUTIFUL for everyday wear and features a single emerald-cut DIAMOND. It is carefully handcrafted in SOLID 14KT GOLD.
For a White Gold and Diamond
This MODERN solitaire engagement ring is LONGING for everyday wear and features a single emerald-cut DIAMOND. It is carefully handcrafted in SOLID 14KT WHITE GOLD.
For Platinum and Ruby
This LAVISH solitaire engagement ring is STUNNING for everyday wear and features a single emerald-cut RUBY. It is carefully handcrafted in EXQUISITE PLATINUM.
I have never been known for my writing abilities, but I think you get the drift. I think if you implemented a system like this you would be sure to actually get more pages indexed with combinations than they have. For reference here is the site I was referring to with my short term SEO job. http://vajajewelry.com/women-s-rings/287-the-siren.html One thing, I would consider adding, although I do not like how it is done on this site, is the 360 rotation. This one uses 36 files to make it look smooth, everything is rendered in jewelry cad.
-
I started looking at them because I saw at Quora someone mentioning that one of their strengths is that they generated THOUSANDS of pages in a way that every combination of gems with a ring design is a different page - when you multiply the options (permutation) the result is an astounding number of pages (even though these pages barely have texts).
What do you think of this method?
I believe that today it is something that only the big companies can get a way with it...
-
Natively they won't get crawled because of the way they are done, but if they are added to the site map they will. I cannot seem to locate gemvara's sitemap on their server to confirm they have them added to the site map.
Think of them as a landing page that you have optimized, but does not link to the rest of your site.
Run these terms through google and you can see that they are indexed.
site:http://www.gemvara.com/jewelry/rich-thin-band/14k-white-gold-ring-with-aquamarine/
site:http://www.gemvara.com/jewelry/lotus-ring/round-black-diamond-14k-white-gold-ring-with-diamond/
From the queries I did, it seems that some are indexed and some are not, but I have no way of knowing that ages of the pages either, because several I came across were not indexed at all for any combination. One thing to keep in mind for their industry Gemvara has about the largest paid advertising budget.

Thanks!
But what about Google's bot? Will he crawl it? Is it considered internal linking?
It is not done by Href's but rather by Javascript and AJAX... -
Yes, they are using a variable tied to the url so that you can access the site and see the combination that has been selected. This is a html5 only thing. You can read more about it here, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/136458/change-the-url-in-the-browser-without-loading-the-new-page-using-javascript/4222584#4222584

Internal Links - Different URLs
Hey so, In my product page, I have recommended products at the bottom. The issue is that those recommended products have long parameters such as sitename.com/product-xy-z/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co&srcType=dp_recs The reason why it has that long parameter is due to tracking purposes (internally with the dev and UX team). My question is, should I replace it with the clean URL or as long as it has the canonical tag, it should be okay to have such a long parameter? I would think clean URL would help with internal links and what not...but if it already has a canonical tag would it help? Another issue is that the URL is different and not just the parameter. For instance..the canonical URL is sitename.com/productname-xyz/ and so the internal link used on the product page (same exact page just different URL with parameter) sitename.com/xyz/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co&srcType=dp_recs (missing product name), BUT still has the canonical tag!

Massive URL Migration with thousands of 301
Hey Everyone! I'm currently working on a project that we have A Lot of product pages and we have thousands of URL's that need to be 301'd over. I know this can be a major issue and could lead to tons of errors. What is everyone's thought of doing such a huge Migration, Should I do it all in phases? or should I do them all at once so they can all be indexed together? What would you suggest to be the best way to go about doing such a massive migration?

URL Question and Advice on Site Architecture
Good morning one and all, i have a specific question pertaining to my Domain Migration Website URL structure. I have a computer repair business that I am re branding and my question at this point is centrally focused on how to best handle my URL naming structure that will best suite my needs for my the Search Engines and also my customers UX while not looking SPAMMY I am a web developer and SEO and I am building a SILO Site Architecture in WordPress using Pages (not Posts) so no discussion is need on the Permalink structure. I am attaching several Images below of Screen Shots of the new site that I have designed so that you may look at them and see the Silo Architecture Layout in action for the most part. OK, here we go. Looking at the Silo Mast Head, we can see that the following Main Menu items each represent a specific Silo Theme Silo Theme # 1 - COMPUTER REPAIR Silo Theme # 2 - VIRUS REMOVAL Silo Theme # 3 - PHONE REPAIR Silo Theme # 4 - NETWORKING Silo Theme # 5 - DATA RECOVERY My specific question is, if /computer-repair/ is a main silo theme (WP -Parent Page) and /laptop-repair/ is a (Child Page) of Computer Repair is the following example below (the actual URL string) going to 'trigger' a SPAM signal to either the user or GOOGLE or both?? URL String: http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/computer-repair/laptop-repair/ Here's another example with the VIRUS REMOVAL SILO http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/virus-removal/malware-removal/ Seeing how computer repair is the main silo theme that cannot be changed in the URL Structure (it can) but I wont change it seeing how COMPUTER REPAIR is the single largest keyword phrase used by individuals when they are looking for computer repair. Secondly, - LAPTOP REPAIR is also a Keyword Phrase that that has HIGH search queries that I am trying to rank for and that too (ideally) should also not changed! How do I deal with this situation? Or, am I seeing this in a overly paranoid way? I currently have the site allowing only my IP Address so I am afraid that the screen shots below is all that I can do on this in lieu of actually visiting the Site Currently, I have my URL Structure where Wilmington NC immediately follows the targeted keyword phrase for the Silo Theme like below http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/virus-removal-wilmington-nc/malware-removal/ The example above, - including the location after the keyword phrase does look much more attractive and breaks it up so it does not read SPAMMY and it will help with SEO but yet another problem exists using the location after the keyword phrase which I explain in detail Below. On top of doing a complete re-branding Domain Change I am actually going to be relocating myself and my business to Charlotte, NC at the end of the summer so I have serious doubts if using Wilmington NC within the URL structure would be a wise idea considering that I will be relocating and an internal 301 Redirect on a Newly Migrated site 2-3 months after the initial site migration and site setup may have some negative impact and confuse Google and compound the situation thus much further despite the fact that it would immediately help me bounce back up with my rankings after the migration process. Thoughts a suggestions on both explained scenarios please? I have asked this specif question once already but obviously people do not read my very detailed and well thought out questions. SEO Overly-Dynamic URL Website with thousands of URLs
Hello, I have a new client who has a Diablo 3 database. They have created a very interesting site in which every "build" is it's own URL. Every page is a list of weapons and gear for the gamer. The reader may love this but it's nightmare for SEO. I have pushed for a blog to help generate inbound links and traffic but overall I feel the main feature of their site is a headache to optimize. They have thousands of pages index in google but none are really their own page. There is no strong content, H-Tags, or any real substance at all. With a lack of definition for each page, Google see's this as a huge ball of mess, with duplicate Page Titles and too many onpage links. The first thing I did was tell them to add a canonical link which seemed to drop the errors down 12K leaving only 2400 left...which is a nice start, but the remaining errors is still a challenge. I'm thinking about seeing if I can either find a way to make each page it's own blurb, H Tag or simple have the Nav bar and all the links in the database Noindex. That way the site is left with only a handful of URLs + the Blog and Forum Thought?

URL Error or Penguin Penalty?
I am currently having a major panic as our website www.uksoccershop.com has been largely dropped from Google. We have not made any changes recently and I am not sure why this is happening, but having heard all sorts of horror stories of penguin update, I am fearing the worst. If you google "uksoccershop" you will see that the homepage does not rank. We previously ranked in the top 3 for "football shirts" but now we don't, although on page 2, 3 and 4 you will see one of our category pages ranking (this didn't used to happen). Some rankings are intact, but many have disappeared completely and in some cases been replaced by other pages on our site. I should point out our existing rankings have been consistently there for 5-6 years until today. I logged into webmaster tools and thankfully there is no warning message from Google about spam, etc, but what we do have is 35,000 URL errors for pages which are accessible. An example of this is: | URL: | http://www.uksoccershop.com/categories/5_295_327.html | | Error details In Sitemaps Linked from Last crawled: 6/20/12First detected: 6/15/12Googlebot couldn't access the contents of this URL because the server had an internal error when trying to process the request. These errors tend to be with the server itself, not with the request. Is it possible this is the cause of the issue (we are not currently sure why the URL's are being blocked) and if so, how severe is it and how recoverable? If that is unlikely to cause the issue, what would you recommend our next move is?All help is REALLY REALLY appreciated 🙂

Canonical URL Question
Hi Everyone I like to run this question by the community and get a second opinion on best practices for an issue that I ran into. I got two pages, Page A is the original page and Page B is the page with duplicate content. We already added** ="Page A**" />** to the duplicate content (Page B).** **Here is my question, since Page B is duplicate content and there is a link rel="canonical" added to it, would you put in the time to add meta tags and optimize the title of the page? Thanks in advance for all your help.**
